Is the 2021 Hyundai Kona a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its great value, smooth driving, and useful features like blind spot detection. The expert review also highlights great handling and easy-to-use technology, while the overview frames it as a small crossover that blends style with everyday usability.

The main trade-offs are a cramped back seat and an underwhelming base engine, and the expert review also calls out poor value for money. Even so, if you want a stylish, maneuverable small crossover with a generous feature set, the Kona fits that brief well. Listings with good or great deals make up 32.7% of the market, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Kona reliable?

Hyundai’s warranty coverage adds another layer of reassurance for used buyers, especially if you plan to keep the vehicle for the long haul. As always, a used Kona is still worth checking carefully for maintenance history and overall condition.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Kona?

At 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection is especially useful here, since the Kona’s smaller cabin and compact packaging make condition and wear easier to notice once you look closely. Focus on the back seat, interior wear, and whether the equipment level matches the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Kona’s styling is playful and distinctive, and higher trims add leather on the steering wheel and seats, while some lighting and fog-light details vary by trim. Base models are simpler, so check whether the features you want are standard or reserved for a higher trim.
• Powertrain: The base model uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, while an optional turbocharged 1.6-liter engine makes 195 hp and 195 lb-ft. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is available, and the turbo setup uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
• Safety package: Every Kona comes with forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a head-up display, and parking sensors are optional.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes an eight-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, six speakers, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and USB inputs. Available upgrades include navigation, wireless device charging, a Harman Kardon audio system, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen.
• Fuel efficiency: With front-wheel drive and the base engine, the Kona returns 27/33/30 mpg city/highway/combined. With all-wheel drive and the base engine, it returns 25/30/27 mpg. The turbo engine with front-wheel drive delivers 28/32/30 mpg, and with all-wheel drive it returns 26/29/27 mpg.

Which 2021 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Night Edition, Limited, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Kona’s core style, standard tech, and safety equipment at the lowest price. It’s the trim to consider if you care most about value and can live without the extra comfort and convenience upgrades.
• SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it builds on the base model without pushing the price too far. It’s the sweet spot if you want a more complete everyday setup while staying close to the Kona’s value-focused side.
• SEL Plus: This trim adds more equipment and is a good fit if you want a richer feature set without jumping all the way to the top of the range. It suits buyers who want more convenience and tech but still want to keep spending in check.
• Night Edition: This is the style play, with the special appearance treatment called out in the overview and summary. Choose it if the darker exterior and interior accents matter to you more than maximizing value.
• Limited: The cost-effectiveness content suggests there’s little penalty for moving up, and this trim is a strong choice if you want a more fully equipped Kona. It’s a good pick if you want more luxury-like features without going all the way to the top.
• Ultimate: This is the top-end choice for shoppers who want the most equipment and are comfortable paying for it. It makes sense if you want the most complete Kona experience and don’t mind spending more for it.

Every Kona comes standard with a strong safety suite, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a head-up display, and parking sensors remain optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Kona?

The market looks moderately favorable if you’re a selective buyer.

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,161 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.57% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 74.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $15,208, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Hyundai Kona's resale value?

The current average of $15,218 sits slightly below last year's $16,644.

That softer pricing suggests the Kona has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range and keep the vehicle in good condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later. Strong demand for well-rated, well-equipped small crossovers can also help support used-market interest.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?

Choose the 2021 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

• The 2021 brings subtle updates, including new colors, a Night Edition, and gloss black accents.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $15,104, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $15,218 average.
• It emphasizes driving enjoyment and adds a new trim level with more standard driver assists.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $17,594, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $15,218 average.
