About 2020 Hyundai Kona
overall
Among subcompact crossovers, a Hyundai is now the best to drive instead of being the best value.
The Hyundai Kona subcompact SUV is one of the smallest cars you can buy with all-wheel drive. It competes in a class of four-door hatchbacks with the lifted suspensions and higher driving positions that crossover buyers want—and with the same generous list of convenience and safety features that come on larger crossovers. We last tested the Kona when it came out for 2018, but a new trim level and more standard driver assists are the major changes for 2020. For what Hyundai charges, the Kona is cramped and the interior disappoints, yet exterior style and on-road performance are spectacular.

The ONLY reason it got a 4 star is because I used have minivans. It's smaller, but AWESOME! Phone links right up and can use my driving apps and the seats are heated :) So easy to drive with all the safety features!

I enjoy driving this car. I like the sunroof, the leather seats, all the electronics and of course the colour. I do think this car is good value, and have not found yet what it might be missing. I cant make comparisons as I dont know that much about cars.

How much does the 2020 Hyundai Kona cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,183 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,633.79 |
| Year-Round High | $16,503.16 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,502 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.00% |
Prices have softened 8.00% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 1,061 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $14,633.79, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.68/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its fun driving experience, responsive handling, stylish design, and fuel efficiency. The expert review also backs up the appeal with strong on-road performance and a chassis that feels especially capable for the class.
The trade-offs are clear: the interior materials feel hard and disappointing, and cargo space is limited. In practical terms, the Kona makes the most sense if you want a small crossover that feels lively and well-equipped rather than maximally roomy or value-focused.
Good and great deals account for 32.2% of listings, so there is still meaningful shopping room in the market.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.68/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with drivers highlighting fuel efficiency, good features, and a car they enjoy living with over time. The expert review also notes Hyundai’s long warranty coverage and says buyers are generally expecting long warranties and good reliability from the brand.
Hyundai also includes three oil changes, which adds a small ownership perk early on. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the car’s cramped cabin and modest cargo space will still suit your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
At 74.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because this model’s appeal depends so much on how it drives and how cleanly it presents, condition matters more than usual. It is also worth checking that the features you want are actually present, since equipment varies a lot by trim.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE has a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the SEL adds proximity entry, auto up/down windows, vanity mirrors, heated front seats, heated mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, tinted rear windows, blind-spot monitoring, SiriusXM, and HD radio. The SEL Plus adds wireless charging, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with garage door openers, an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar, an eight-speaker Infinity stereo, and Blue Link connectivity. The Limited and Ultimate add more upscale equipment, with the Ultimate bringing the most features.
- Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 147 hp and 132 lb-ft, paired with a 6-speed automatic. The turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder makes 175 hp and 195 lb-ft and uses a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. AWD is optional with either engine, and AWD models get an independent rear suspension.
- Safety package: Forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor come standard. The Kona also offers adaptive cruise control on the Ultimate, while pedestrian detection is limited to that trim. Front knee airbags and rear side airbags are not included.
- Infotainment: The base model gets a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, and the SEL Plus brings Blue Link connectivity plus wireless charging.
- Fuel efficiency: The 1.6T AWD is rated at 26 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. The 2.0 AWD returns 26/30/28. FWD versions with either engine can reach 30 mpg combined and up to 33 mpg highway.
Which 2020 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?
The 2020 Hyundai Kona is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, and Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the least expensive way into the Kona, but it is also the most stripped-down. You still get the 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus standard safety tech, so it covers the basics if you mainly want the styling and driving feel.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the everyday convenience features many buyers will actually notice, including proximity entry, heated front seats, heated mirrors, blind-spot monitoring, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
- SEL Plus: This trim is the smart step up if you want more comfort and tech, thanks to wireless charging, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with garage door openers, an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar, and the upgraded Infinity audio system.
- Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the turbo engine and a more upscale feel. It adds the stronger powertrain and leather upholstery, making it the most compelling choice if driving enjoyment matters most.
- Ultimate: This is the most feature-rich Kona, with a sunroof, 8-inch navigation screen, auto high beams, adaptive cruise control, and the most complete equipment list.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but pedestrian detection is reserved for the Ultimate.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,061 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.00% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,633.79, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $15,183 sits slightly below last year's $16,502.
That softer pricing suggests the Kona has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. The model’s strong styling and enjoyable driving character should continue to support demand, especially among shoppers who want a small crossover with personality. Still, resale will depend heavily on trim, condition, and whether the car has the features buyers expect.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.68/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona safe?
The 2020 Kona scored five-star overall ratings from NHTSA, with five-star ratings for driver and passenger in the frontal test and for driver and rear passenger in the side test, plus a four-star rollover rating. It also earned a 2020 Top Safety Pick from IIHS.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Forward emergency braking comes standard, along with lane-keep assist and a driver attention monitor. The Kona also includes pedestrian detection only on the Ultimate trim, and the IIHS noted that its pedestrian detection performance was weaker than its vehicle-detection performance. One important caveat is that the Kona does not include front knee airbags or rear side airbags.
Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.00% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.68/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 update adds more standard driver assists and a new trim level.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $15,669, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $15,183 average.
- It adds a Night Edition with blacked-out styling and new color choices.
The bottom line: If you want the better buy today, the 2020 is the stronger starting point because it costs less and already brings the Kona’s best traits: style, handling, and a solid feature set. If you are willing to pay more for a slightly fresher model with cosmetic updates, the 2021 is the better secondary path, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2020.
