About 2020 Hyundai Kona
overall
Among subcompact crossovers, a Hyundai is now the best to drive instead of being the best value.
The Hyundai Kona subcompact SUV is one of the smallest cars you can buy with all-wheel drive. It competes in a class of four-door hatchbacks with the lifted suspensions and higher driving positions that crossover buyers want—and with the same generous list of convenience and safety features that come on larger crossovers. We last tested the Kona when it came out for 2018, but a new trim level and more standard driver assists are the major changes for 2020. For what Hyundai charges, the Kona is cramped and the interior disappoints, yet exterior style and on-road performance are spectacular.

The ONLY reason it got a 4 star is because I used have minivans. It's smaller, but AWESOME! Phone links right up and can use my driving apps and the seats are heated :) So easy to drive with all the safety features!

I enjoy driving this car. I like the sunroof, the leather seats, all the electronics and of course the colour. I do think this car is good value, and have not found yet what it might be missing. I cant make comparisons as I dont know that much about cars.

How much does the 2020 Hyundai Kona cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,251 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,620.53 |
| Year-Round High | $16,493.78 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,428 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.16% |
Prices have softened 7.16% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,052 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare prices and conditions.
If you find a listing below $14,620.53, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.68/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its fun driving experience, responsive handling, stylish design, and fuel efficiency. The overview also points to a compact crossover that gives you a lifted seating position, hatchback practicality, and a generous feature set for the class.
The trade-offs are clear: the interior is cramped, cargo space is limited, and the value proposition may not feel as strong as the styling and driving manners suggest.
For you, that means the Kona makes the most sense if you want a small crossover that feels lively and well-equipped rather than maximally spacious or budget-focused.
With 27.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.68/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the Kona’s fuel efficiency and the kind of everyday usability that helps you count on it over time. The expert drive notes also reinforce that Hyundai backed the Kona with a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty, a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, and three oil changes.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s compact packaging and interior quality will still feel acceptable after years of use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
At 74.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because the Kona’s cabin and cargo area are already on the small side, condition matters more than usual: worn interior surfaces, damaged trim, or neglected maintenance can make the ownership experience feel tighter and less satisfying.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE gets the essentials, but the SEL adds the convenience features many shoppers will want, and the Limited and Ultimate bring a more premium feel with larger wheels and additional gray trim. The cabin quality is still a weak point, so pay attention to whether the trim level you’re considering adds enough comfort and equipment to justify the price.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.0-liter engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic, while the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque is reserved for the Limited and Ultimate. AWD is optional, and it brings an independent rear suspension that improves handling feel.
- Safety package: Forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor come standard. The Ultimate adds pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control, while some competitors offer more airbags than the Kona.
- Infotainment: The base model includes a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. SEL Plus adds wireless charging, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with garage door openers, an eight-speaker Infinity stereo, and Blue Link connectivity, while the Ultimate upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0 AWD returns 26/30/28 mpg, the 1.6T AWD returns 26/29/27 mpg, and FWD versions can reach 30 mpg combined and up to 33 mpg highway.
Which 2020 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?
The 2020 Hyundai Kona is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Kona experience with a 7-inch touchscreen and smartphone integration. It makes sense if you want the lowest price, but you’ll give up several convenience features that make the Kona feel more complete.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the convenience features many drivers will actually use, including proximity entry, heated front seats, heated mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, tinted rear windows, blind-spot monitoring, SiriusXM satellite radio, and HD radio.
- SEL Plus: This is the smart pick if you want a more modern tech setup, since it adds wireless charging, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with garage door openers, an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar, an eight-speaker Infinity stereo, and Blue Link connectivity.
- Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the turbocharged engine and a more upscale feel, since it adds the 1.6-liter turbo engine, the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, and leather upholstery.
- Ultimate: This is the most feature-rich Kona, with a sunroof, an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, auto high beams, adaptive cruise control, and pedestrian detection. It suits you best if you want the fullest safety and convenience package.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but pedestrian detection is reserved for the Ultimate.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,052 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.16% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,620.53, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $15,251 sits slightly below last year's $16,428.
That price decline suggests the Kona has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price now, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later. The strongest resale prospects will likely come from well-kept examples with clean history and desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.68/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona safe?
The 2020 Kona scored five-star overall ratings from NHTSA, with five-star ratings for driver and passenger in the frontal test and for driver and rear passenger in the side test, plus four-star ratings in the rollover risk test.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Kona’s standard safety suite includes forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor. The Ultimate trim adds pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control. One caveat is that the Kona does not include front knee airbags or rear side airbags, and pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate.
Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.16% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.68/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds a new trim level and more standard driver assists.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $15,609, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $15,251 average.
- It adds new colors and a Night Edition with blacked-out styling.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger buy because prices have eased and inventory is healthy. If you care more about slightly newer styling touches and are willing to pay more, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative.
