Used 2020 Hyundai Kona for Sale nearChicago, IL

How much does the 2020 Hyundai Kona cost?

Prices have softened 4.16% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,103 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 6.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Drivers consistently praise its fun driving experience, responsive handling, stylish design, and good features. The overview also frames it as a small crossover that puts style and driving enjoyment ahead of the usual value-first formula, which fits the way shoppers tend to use it as a distinctive, easy-to-live-with crossover.

The trade-offs are clear: the interior quality is a weak point, and the cabin and cargo area are both tight. That makes it a better fit if you care more about personality and road feel than maximum practicality.

Good and great deals account for 35.0% of listings, so there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with drivers highlighting good features, fuel efficiency, and a fun, trouble-free character. The expert review also emphasizes the Kona’s long warranty coverage and notes that Hyundai is expected to deliver good reliability.

That said, used buyers should still watch for wear tied to the Kona’s compact packaging and make sure the specific car has been maintained carefully.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?

At 71.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, interior condition, and cargo-area wear. Because the Kona’s value depends heavily on condition, it makes sense to focus on signs of prior damage, uneven panel gaps, and any evidence that the cabin has been heavily used.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SE is the most stripped-down version, while the SEL adds the convenience features many shoppers will want, including proximity entry, heated front seats, heated mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, tinted rear windows, blind-spot monitoring, SiriusXM satellite radio, and HD radio. The SEL Plus adds wireless charging, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with garage door openers, an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar, an eight-speaker Infinity stereo, and Blue Link connectivity. The Limited and Ultimate bring the more upscale equipment, with the Ultimate adding the sunroof, larger touchscreen with navigation, auto high beams, and adaptive cruise control.
• Powertrain: The standard engine is a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four with 147 hp and 132 lb-ft, paired with a 6-speed automatic. A 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four with 175 hp and 195 lb-ft is available on the Limited and Ultimate, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional.
• Safety package: The Kona includes forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor as standard equipment. The IIHS Top Safety Pick rating is tied to the optional LED headlights and top crash-test results, while pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate.
• Infotainment: The base model has a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SEL Plus adds Blue Link connectivity and wireless charging, while the Ultimate upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0 AWD returns 26/30/28 mpg city/highway/combined, while FWD versions can reach 30 mpg combined and up to 33 mpg highway. The 1.6T AWD is rated at 26 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined.

Which 2020 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2020 Hyundai Kona is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, Ultimate, and SEL Tech Package.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, but it is the most basic version of the Kona. You get the core shape and standard touchscreen setup, yet the rest of the lineup adds the convenience and comfort features that make the Kona feel more complete.
• SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the everyday features many buyers will actually use, including proximity entry, heated front seats, heated mirrors, blind-spot monitoring, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
• SEL Plus: This is the smart step up if you want more tech, thanks to wireless charging, Blue Link connectivity, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with garage door openers, an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar, and an eight-speaker Infinity stereo.
• Limited: This trim is the gateway to the turbo engine and dual-clutch transmission, plus leather upholstery, so it makes sense if you want stronger acceleration and a more upscale feel.
• Ultimate: This is the most feature-rich choice, adding the sunroof, 8-inch navigation touchscreen, auto high beams, adaptive cruise control, and pedestrian detection.
• SEL Tech Package: This name appears as the former tech-package version of the SEL Plus, so it is best understood as the tech-focused step for shoppers who want more convenience and connectivity features.

The safety package is strongest on the upper trims, and pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?

The market looks moderately favorable if you are a selective buyer.

• Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,103 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.16% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 71.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,629, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Hyundai Kona's resale value?

The current average of $15,102 sits slightly below last year's $15,759.

That softer pricing suggests the Kona has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it comes time to sell.

The model’s strong owner satisfaction rating also helps support demand in the used market. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona safe?

The 2020 Kona scored five out of five stars overall in crash tests approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with maximum ratings for driver and passenger in the frontal test and for driver and rear passenger in the side test. It scored four out of five stars in the rollover risk test.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Kona includes forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor as standard equipment. The IIHS rated it a 2020 Top Safety Pick for top crash-test results, optional LED headlights, and a top Superior rating for forward emergency braking. Pedestrian detection is only available on the Ultimate, and the Kona does not include front knee airbags or rear side airbags.

Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 71.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.16% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 model adds a new trim level and more standard driver assists.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $15,221, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $15,102 average.
• It adds new colors and a Night Edition with blacked-out styling.

The bottom line: If you want the better price and a broad selection, the 2020 is the stronger buy. If you are willing to pay a bit more for minor styling updates, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative for shoppers who want the newest nearby version.
