CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Honda CR-V
overall

Summary
With 3,966 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,085, 37.6% of 2021 Honda CR-V listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Honda CR-V 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
74.0% of 2021 Honda CR-V listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Honda CR-V stands out because it combines broad appeal with a practical, easy-to-live-with formula that has made it one of the best-selling vehicles in the United States. It is the best-selling Honda by far, the second best-selling compact SUV, and the fifth best-selling vehicle in the U.S., which helps explain why so many buyers keep coming back to it. Its strengths are straightforward: plenty of cargo space, standard advanced safety features, and excellent value for money.
At the same time, the CR-V is not trying to win every category. The available information describes its styling as uninspired and its performance as fairly pedestrian, and it is also noted as not being the cheapest, the best equipped at the middle to lower trim levels, the fastest, the quietest, or the most fuel efficient. That balance of strong practicality and modest excitement is a big part of its identity, and it helps make the 2021 Honda CR-V appealing to shoppers who want a sensible compact SUV rather than a standout in any single flashy area.

2021 Honda CRV Touring (My Wifes Vehicle). Consistently get 32 MPG Around Town. Drives Good And No Rattles In The Vehicle. It Has All The Bells And Whistles But Would Be Nice If Honda Offered Cooling For Seats. Would Also Be Nice If Infotainment Screen Was Larger. Overall Impression After 1 Week Of Ownership Is Very Good.

How much does the 2021 Honda CR-V cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,078 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,312 |
| Year-Round High | $24,896 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,895 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.28% |
Prices have softened 3.28% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,944 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
Is the 2021 Honda CR-V a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Honda CR-V earns a 4.79/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the spacious and comfortable interior, the excellent fuel economy, and the strong safety features. The model also gets repeated credit for being reliable and for delivering the kind of long-term satisfaction many shoppers want from a compact SUV.
The trade-offs are familiar: the engine can feel short on power during highway merging, and the cabin does not offer the most impressive sound insulation or the largest infotainment screen. That makes it a strong fit if you want a practical, easy-to-live-with SUV rather than something sporty or flashy.
With the CR-V’s broad appeal and value-focused formula, it makes the most sense for you if you prioritize everyday usability, cargo space, and safety over excitement. The market still shows 38.3% good or great deals, so there is room to shop carefully.
Is the 2021 Honda CR-V reliable?
Owners rate it 4.79/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a reliable, dependable SUV that many owners feel confident keeping for the long haul. The overall tone is that the CR-V is trouble-free enough to inspire repeat satisfaction, especially for buyers who want a vehicle they can count on day to day.
The driving notes reinforce that impression with smooth, steady acceleration and predictable cornering, which supports an easy ownership experience. Honda also includes a first scheduled maintenance visit that is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Honda CR-V?
At 74% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on condition details that matter in daily use: interior wear, feature operation, and evidence of prior bodywork or repairs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is the most stripped-down version, with a 5-inch screen and Bluetooth connectivity, while higher trims add the more desirable cabin and tech upgrades. The base trim also misses some convenience and safety content that you get higher up the range.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses the same 190-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine and CVT, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive available as an extra-cost option. The setup is tuned for smooth, steady acceleration rather than excitement.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard across the lineup and includes a multi-angle rearview camera, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, road departure mitigation, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and auto high-beam headlamps. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is not standard on the LX.
- Infotainment: The LX gets a 5-inch color screen, while every other trim has a 7-inch high-definition touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SMS text messaging functions. The Touring trim is the only one with satellite navigation and voice recognition.
- Fuel efficiency: Front-wheel-drive models are rated at 28 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, while all-wheel-drive models are rated at 27 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.
Which 2021 Honda CR-V trim should I buy?
The 2021 Honda CR-V is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, Special Edition, EX, EX-L, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the value entry point, but it is also the most basic version. You get the essentials, yet the smaller screen and missing blind spot monitoring make it the least appealing choice if you want a more modern-feeling daily driver.
- Special Edition: This is a sensible step up if you want a better-equipped CR-V without jumping too far in price. It adds useful comfort and tech content over the LX, making it a stronger everyday pick.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the more desirable infotainment setup and the safety upgrade that includes blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
- EX-L: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin and a nicer audio setup. It builds on the EX with extra speakers and a more premium feel.
- Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, with the strongest audio system, navigation, and a wireless phone charger. It makes sense if you want the most features and are willing to pay for them.
Honda’s safety package is standard across the lineup, but the LX misses blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Honda CR-V?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.
- Deal availability: 38.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,944 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.28% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,312, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Honda CR-V's resale value?
The current average of $24,078 sits slightly below last year's $24,895.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also suggests the model has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation. If you plan to sell later, the current trend means you should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim.
The CR-V’s broad shopper appeal helps support resale demand, especially because it combines practicality, safety, and strong owner satisfaction. Well-kept examples should remain easier to move than less popular compact SUVs.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Honda CR-V safe?
The 2021 Honda CR-V earned a Top Safety Pick award from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA. It earns five-star ratings in all NHTSA tests.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is standard on every trim and includes a multi-angle rearview camera, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, road departure mitigation, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and auto high-beam headlamps. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard starting on the EX, so the LX is the one trim that misses that feature.
The main caveat is that the CR-V did not reach the higher IIHS Top Safety Pick+ level because of lower headlight scores and the updated side crash test. It also received an Acceptable rating for LATCH ease of use.
Should I buy a 2021 Honda CR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 38.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.28% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines broad appeal with practical cargo space and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $22,615, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $24,078 average.
- It got engine and safety upgrades that improved fuel economy and value.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of features, safety, and shopper demand, the 2021 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the CR-V’s core practicality.
