CarGurus Analysis: 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD

Summary
With 1,686 currently listed for sale and an average price of $50,829, 29.2% of 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HDs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD 5 / 5 stars.
78.2% of 2021 Sierra 2500HD models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD stands out as a heavy-duty pickup that leans more upscale than many rivals. In this generation, GMC offers more trim levels than the related Chevy Silverado 2500HD, along with a broader range of upscale options and features. The Denali and Denali Ultimate trims are described as more luxurious than the Silverado’s top-tier High Country trim, which helps give the Sierra 2500HD a more premium feel. It also comes with a wide spread of cabin and bed configurations, including Regular Cab, Crew Cab, and Double Cab body styles, plus 7-foot or 8-foot-2-inch cargo bed options.
For 2021, the Sierra 2500HD is available with a 6.6-liter V8 gas engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, or a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 with a 10-speed automatic transmission from Allison. Rear- and four-wheel drive are available. The truck’s equipment list is broad, with Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and wifi hotspot accessibility through the GMC infotainment system, plus available features such as remote keyless entry and rear-seat reminders. Higher trims can add a Bose Premium audio system, power-adjustable front seats, chrome grille trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, and power-folding tailgate options, while AT4 models bring off-road hardware and accessories such as skid plates, off-road suspension upgrades, and a more robust transfer case.
That premium positioning comes with some tradeoffs. The truck had very high MSRPs when new, and used examples can show a range of problems, including check engine lights tied to diesel particulate filters or emissions sensors, sluggish infotainment responses, rough or delayed shifts, electrical glitches, MultiPro tailgate issues, and faulty trailer brake controllers. Even so, the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD remains appealing for buyers who want a heavy-duty truck with strong capability, a wide trim spread, and more comfort and technology than many competitors.

-Excellent trailering mirrors with lights, allow increased visibility when backing up at night -Engine noise is relatively quiet compared to older diesel pick ups, can order at fast food drive throughs without shutting engine off -Fuel economy is good for a vehicle of this size (I have 3500HD, not 2500HD) -Driver safety features and various camera views are very helpful -Trim version for this review is Denali, with power running boards, really not missing anything significant

If you find a listing below $50,396.84, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD a good car?
Yes — the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
The overview describes it as a heavy-duty pickup that leans more upscale than many rivals, with more trim levels than the related Silverado 2500HD and a broader range of upscale options and features. It also stands out for its premium-leaning Denali and Denali Ultimate trims, plus available configurations that let you tailor it for work, comfort, or a mix of both.
For you, that means this truck makes the most sense if you want heavy-duty capability without giving up a more upscale cabin and feature set. 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview also points to a truck that brings a broad equipment list and multiple configurations, which can help you find a version that fits your needs without overbuying. At the same time, it notes reported problems such as check engine lights tied to diesel particulate filters or emissions sensors, sluggish infotainment responses, rough or delayed shifts, electrical glitches, MultiPro tailgate issues, and faulty trailer brake controllers.
For used buyers, that means reliability can depend heavily on maintenance history and how well the truck has been cared for over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with a history report to confirm accident status, title status, and service records before you go any further. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of the truck’s electronics, transmission behavior, tailgate operation, and trailer-brake equipment, since those are the kinds of areas that can matter most on a used heavy-duty pickup.
It also makes sense to focus on overall condition and how the truck was used, especially if you plan to tow, haul, or keep it for the long term.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,701 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.03% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $50,396.84, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD's resale value?
The current average of $50,842 sits slightly below last year's $53,536.
That price movement suggests the market has eased, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also temper near-term appreciation if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the good news is that a truck with broad appeal and premium trim options can still attract buyers who want capability and comfort in one package.
Because the model is positioned as an upscale heavy-duty pickup, well-kept examples should remain easier to market than rougher trucks with unclear histories. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $49,184, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $50,842 average.
- It emphasizes capability and upscale appeal, but with a less polished luxury experience.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $51,235, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $50,842 average.
- It adds useful trailering tech and broader work-and-play appeal.
The bottom line: the 2021 is the best all-around pick if you want a premium-leaning heavy-duty truck with strong owner satisfaction and decent deal availability. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better secondary path; if you want a newer alternative and are willing to pay more, the 2022 is worth a look.
