CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Ford Ranger
overall

Summary
With 2,285 currently listed for sale and an average price of $26,658.00, 33.3% of 2021 Ford Rangers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Ford Ranger 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
81.5% of 2021 Ranger models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Ford Ranger stands out as a midsize pickup that balances everyday usefulness with off-road capability, especially when equipped with the new Tremor Off-Road Package. That package gives the Ranger a more terrain-focused identity, and the truck is described as a solid all-rounder in the segment. It also offers multiple body styles, which adds to its appeal for buyers who want a truck that can fit different needs.
Ford’s Tremor name is relatively new in the Ranger lineup, and for 2021 it signals a truck built for difficult terrain rather than high-speed desert running. The Ranger also earns credit for spaciousness and easy-to-use technology, both of which help it feel practical in daily use. At the same time, it has some drawbacks: the styling is uninspired, the interior materials feel cheap, and the technology is outdated.

Love the Ranger! It almost scratched every itch I was looking for in a truck. Cargurus did have heated seats as a description but they weren't an option on the truck. All n all im still very pleased.

The 2021 Ford Ranger is a very solid and responsive small truck. The I4 engine is a perfect match for this truck not only for responsiveness but towing capability. Truck is very quiet from an interior noise level and free of any squeaks or rattles.

See more price trendsHow much does the 2021 Ford Ranger cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $26,715 |

| Year-Round High | $28,880.24 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,878 |

Prices have softened 7.49% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,328 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing options.
If you find a listing below $26,309.05, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Ford Ranger a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Ford Ranger earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.0/10 expert rating.
The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Technology.
Drivers consistently praise its spaciousness, comfort, and strong towing abilities, and they also note that it has plenty of power for everyday use and work. The Ranger’s appeal is strongest if you want a midsize truck that can handle suburban life, hauling, and commuting without feeling undersized.
The trade-offs are clear: the styling is uninspired, the interior materials feel cheap, and the technology is outdated. That makes it a better fit if you value usefulness and capability more than a polished cabin or the latest features.
For buyers who want a practical midsize pickup with multiple body styles and off-road capability, the Ranger’s overall package makes sense. The market also shows 33.0% good or great deals, which gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Ford Ranger reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as solid, capable, and a truck they can count on for towing, power, and everyday use. The expert evaluation also points to a refined, comfortable, and capable truck, which supports the idea that it should hold up well as a used purchase if it has been maintained properly.
Ford’s turbocharged four-cylinder and 10-speed automatic are presented as the Ranger’s only powertrain, and the truck is described as having no deficit in power. That combination suggests dependable day-to-day performance rather than a complicated mechanical setup.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright weakness and more about finding a truck that has been used hard, especially if it saw off-road duty or towing.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford Ranger?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are not the same as guaranteed clean-condition trucks. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if the truck has been used for towing, off-roading, or heavy daily work. Focus on wear items, cabin condition, and signs that the truck’s capability has been used hard rather than lightly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base setup includes the Ranger’s standard cabin and equipment, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience. The Lariat trim brings adaptive cruise control, and the Tremor-equipped truck adds a more purposeful off-road look with unique wheels, all-terrain tires, tow hooks, side steps, and graphics.
- Powertrain: Every Ranger uses a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It delivers 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, and the Tremor setup adds off-road hardware without changing the core engine.
- Safety package: Co-Pilot360 includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning with trailer coverage. Adaptive cruise control is standard on Lariat, but it does not offer full-stop or stop-and-go capability.
- Infotainment: The Ranger uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 3. It includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice recognition, HD Radio, SiriusXM, AppLink with Waze and Ford + Alexa, FordPass Connect with a 4G WiFi hotspot, navigation, and a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The Tremor version is rated at 19 mpg in the city, 19 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg combined. In testing, it averaged 18.5 mpg.
Which 2021 Ford Ranger trim should I buy?
The 2021 Ford Ranger is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The XL is the most stripped-down choice, so you give up some of the comfort and convenience touches that make the Ranger feel more polished. If you want the lowest entry point, it gets you the core truck hardware, but not the richer feature set.
- Sweet-spot trim: The XLT is the best value if you want a more balanced mix of equipment without jumping all the way to the top. It sits between the basic work-truck feel and the more upscale Lariat experience.
- Premium/top trim: The Lariat is the best pick if you want the most comfort and tech. It adds adaptive cruise control and pairs well with the Ranger’s stronger convenience and infotainment features.
- Off-road trim: The Tremor package is the one to choose if you want the Ranger’s off-road identity, but it is less ideal if your driving is mostly pavement and payload-focused.
The safety package is Co-Pilot360, and it is available as standard or optional equipment across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford Ranger?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,328 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,309.05, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Ford Ranger's resale value?
The current average of $26,715 sits slightly below last year's $28,878.
That price movement suggests the Ranger has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can help you if you are shopping now. For a future seller, the softer market means you may not recover as much as buyers paid a year ago, especially if your truck lacks desirable equipment or has visible wear.
Even so, the Ranger’s broad appeal, strong owner satisfaction, and practical capability should help it stay relevant with used-truck shoppers. Well-kept examples with clean history and desirable features should hold demand better than rougher trucks.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Ford Ranger safe?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the truck an overall rating of four-star ratings, mainly because of its three-star rollover resistance rating. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the Ranger gets top scores aside from an Acceptable rating for front-passenger protection in the small-overlap frontal-impact test and a Marginal rating for its headlights.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning with trailer coverage. Adaptive cruise control is standard on Lariat, but it does not include full-stop or stop-and-go functionality.
The main safety caveat is that the Ranger’s crashworthiness is good, but not great, and the headlight result is a notable weak point. If safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to trim and equipment level rather than assuming every Ranger is equally equipped.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The Tremor package gives the Ranger a more terrain-focused identity and strong off-road capability.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $24,590, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $26,715 average.
- It blends capability with technology.
The bottom line: If you want the Ranger with the strongest off-road identity and a softer used-market price than last year, the 2021 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly path, especially if you can live with a slightly older model year.
