overall

Summary
With 1,619 currently listed for sale and an average price of $36,687, 30.9% of 2020 Toyota Tundras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Tundra 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 5.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Tundra stands out most for its reputation for reliability. The test-drive data describes it as practically a guarantee that you’ll never need to buy another one ever again, and it says the truck should prove utterly bulletproof in terms of reliability. That same source also makes clear that this durability comes with tradeoffs, calling the Tundra uncompetitive in numerous ways.
Even so, the 2020 Toyota Tundra has a few appealing strengths. It is described as spacious, and its stereo is called impressive. At the same time, buyers should be aware of its drawbacks: poor fuel economy, a noisy cabin, and poor safety ratings. The user review summary echoes the truck’s dependable character and roomy interior, while also noting that some drivers dislike its gas mileage and outdated interior design compared with competitors.

I purchased this truck new and overall the value is good but I have had some challenges. My a/c has a gremlin in it sometimes it works sometimes works but not at the level it was designed for. This truck rides like a truck so if you are looking for a nice this isn't the truck for you. I have the crew cab and the space inside is fantastic. I also like having the V8 engine. Overall it is a good buy but the interior is definitely dated. I need a key to start where others only need press a button. :-)

The expert test-drive notes also frame the Tundra as a refined and durable workhorse, which lines up with the truck’s reputation for being something you can count on over time.
Toyota also includes 2 years or 25,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical trust and more about living with the truck’s age-related compromises and operating costs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Tundra?
At 65.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because the truck’s safety record is a weak point, condition and accident history matter more than usual when you’re narrowing down candidates.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Tundra is sold in SR, SR5, Limited, TRD Pro, Platinum, and 1794 Edition trim. The higher you climb on this trim-level ladder, the fancier and plusher a Tundra gets, and the base trims are the ones most likely to leave you without the nicer interior materials and upgraded equipment.
- Powertrain: Every 2020 Tundra uses a 5.7-liter V8 with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It makes 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, and the setup is described as refined and durable.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, and you can also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Every Tundra includes Safety Connect services with automatic collision notification and SOS emergency calling.
- Infotainment: Lower trims get a 7-inch display, while pricier versions upgrade to an 8-inch screen. All versions include Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, satellite radio, USB ports, and connected services.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says a Tundra 4WD gets 13 mpg in the city, 17 on the highway, and 14 combined. The expert review also notes that gas mileage is unimpressive.
Which 2020 Toyota Tundra trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Tundra is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, Limited, TRD Pro, Platinum, and 1794 Edition.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live without the richer trim upgrades found higher up the range.
- SR5: This is the trim to target if you want a practical step up from the base model without jumping too far in price.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it moves you into a more upscale version of the truck without going all the way to the premium end.
- TRD Pro: This is the off-road-focused choice, with standard 4WD, BBS forged aluminum wheels, heavy-duty Fox off-road shocks, a TRD-tuned dual exhaust, and an aluminum skid plate.
- Platinum: Choose this if you want a more luxurious Tundra with the plusher feel that comes from climbing the trim ladder.
- 1794 Edition: This is the most distinctive upscale trim in the lineup if you want a more premium-feeling truck.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Tundra?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right truck.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,647 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.67% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $35,120, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Tundra's resale value?
The current average of $36,682 sits slightly below last year's $38,078.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means sellers may need to be realistic about expectations. If you’re planning to resell later, the current trend shows that values have eased rather than surged, so condition and mileage will matter a lot when it’s time to list.
The Tundra’s reputation for holding value helps support demand, especially among shoppers who prioritize durability and long-term ownership. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Tundra safe?
The 2020 Toyota Tundra earns Good IIHS ratings in some tests, but it also gets Marginal and Poor results in small-overlap frontal testing, and its headlights are rated Marginal. It earns five-star side-impact protection from NHTSA, four-star frontal-impact protection, and four-star rollover resistance with 4WD; a RWD Tundra gets a three-star rollover resistance rating.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, and you can also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Every Tundra also includes Safety Connect services with automatic collision notification and SOS emergency calling.
The main caveat is that the crash-test results are uneven, so safety-conscious used buyers should pay close attention to trim equipment and overall condition, but the underlying ratings still leave this truck behind stronger rivals.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Tundra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.67% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 stands out for its bulletproof reliability and standard Toyota Safety Sense.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $34,593, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $36,682 average.
- It keeps the same straightforward, durable pickup formula with no major updates.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $38,810, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $36,682 average.
- It keeps the old-school truck formula while adding modern infotainment and safety tech.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of reliability reputation and current-market pricing, the 2020 is the sensible default. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense if you’re willing to pay more for a slightly newer model-year alternative.
