CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Prius
overall

Summary
With 273 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,545.00, 31.9% of 2020 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Prius 4.8 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
64.1% of 2020 Prius models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Prius stands out as a dedicated hybrid that has long served as a benchmark in its segment. It is described as a leader among hybrids thanks to its versatility and technology, and its fuel-efficiency focus is presented as a core part of its appeal without giving up style, drivability, or versatility. That combination helps explain why it remains such a recognizable name in hybrids.
For buyers, the Prius’s biggest strengths are straightforward: it is fuel-efficient and comes with standard advanced safety features. The available all-wheel-drive variant adds another layer of appeal for shoppers who want hybrid efficiency with extra traction. Owners also tend to praise its gas mileage, practicality, cargo space, handling, and value for money.
The main drawback noted is its potentially polarizing design, which may not appeal to everyone. Some owners also miss luxury touches such as GPS and leather seats, and complaints about the absence of a spare tire and an annoying backup beep suggest that the Prius prioritizes efficiency and practicality over premium extras.

It has great gas mileage, good handling, good looks. The sunroof was a necessary feature so I only looked at models with a sunroof. I really like that the car holds its value. I do not like that it has no spare tire.

This is our 5th Prius, and we would drive no other car. The 2020 we bought has so many good safety features. After 1 week, we have 60 MPH average.

LE trim is just right. A little shocking at first with missing luxuries (I traded my Tesla). But as a pragmatic car that is enjoyable to drive, has great cargo space- it makes sense and is fun. I get 58mph so far without trying. Not infinite like my electric was, but I don’t have to charge 45 min every two weeks. Gas once a month works great. The backup beep is really annoying, but carista works and you can turn it off.

Because the Prius is often bought for efficiency and low running costs, you want to make sure the car still reflects that promise in real-world condition.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The L Eco comes with 15-inch alloy wheels with wheel covers, automatic climate control, cloth upholstery, push-button start, three USB ports, Bluetooth, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The LE adds a rear windshield wiper, front-and-rear parking sensors, seat-back pockets, and a tonneau cover. The XLE adds 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, synthetic leather upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and wireless device charging. The Limited adds adaptive, self-leveling headlights, a head-up display, satellite radio, HD Radio, and an 11.6-inch touchscreen, but that larger screen loses Android Auto support.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and battery for 121 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, and an all-wheel-drive variant adds a second electric motor for the rear wheels that operates at speeds up to 43 mph. The Prius also offers EV, Eco, and Power drive modes, plus a B mode for engine braking.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front-and-rear parking sensors, active park assist, and lane-tracing assist are available, with some of those features tied to higher trims.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, WiFi hotspot capability, and three USB ports. The Limited upgrades to an 11.6-inch screen with a portrait layout and split-screen functionality, but it lacks Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The Eco trim returns 58 mpg city, 53 highway, 56 combined. The standard Prius returns 54 mpg city, 50 highway, 52 combined. All-wheel drive lowers estimates to 52 mpg city, 48 highway, 50 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Prius is offered in 4 trim levels: L Eco, LE, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L Eco: This is the efficiency-first choice, and it gives you the core Prius experience with the best fuel economy plus standard tech and safety features. If you want the lowest entry point and care most about mpg, this is the trim to start with.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like parking sensors, a rear wiper, and cargo-area convenience without pushing you into luxury pricing.
- XLE: This is the comfort-focused sweet spot if you want a more upscale cabin, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and wireless charging.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich version, with the largest touchscreen, head-up display, and premium audio, but you give up Android Auto on that larger screen.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, so even the lower trims give you a strong safety baseline.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Prius?
The market looks seller-friendly, so you should act selectively and be ready to move when you find a strong listing.
- Deal availability: 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 270 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.06% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 61.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,066.04, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $21,668 sits slightly above last year's $20,624.
That upward move suggests the Prius continues to hold buyer interest well, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. Strong demand for efficient hybrids can help support pricing, especially when the car has a clean history and good condition. The relatively tight spread between the year-ago average and today’s price also suggests this model year has remained relevant in the used market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius safe?
The Prius earned a five-star rating from NHTSA, and it also earned a Top Safety Pick accolade from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Available upgrades include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front-and-rear parking sensors, active park assist, and lane-tracing assist.
One caveat is that the Prius fell short of IIHS’s highest rating because of average scores in the passenger-side small overlap front crash test and headlight testing.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.06% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model keeps the Prius’s hybrid efficiency focus while offering strong standard safety and available AWD.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $19,511, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $21,668 average.
- It adds a revised trim strategy and available electric AWD.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $21,776, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $21,668 average.
- It makes Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard across the board and adds standard Android Auto.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, efficiency, and safety, the 2020 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 is worth a look if you want the newer standard tech and can pay a bit more.
