How much does the 2020 Toyota Prius cost?

Prices are up 4.24% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.

There are 285 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2020 Toyota Prius a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Toyota Prius earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its impressive gas mileage, safety features, cargo space, handling, and value for money. The Prius also fits buyers who want a practical hybrid with everyday usefulness, especially if you care more about efficiency and versatility than flash.

The main trade-offs are its potentially polarizing design and the lack of some luxury touches, including GPS and leather seats. The expert review also notes that the Prius is more about balanced commuting than driving excitement.

With 30.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Toyota Prius reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for practicality, efficiency, and value. The expert review also emphasizes the Prius as a low-hassle hybrid built around fuel economy, everyday usability, and solid driving dynamics.

Toyota’s warranty coverage for the hybrid system and battery adds another layer of confidence for used buyers. Even so, you should still verify maintenance history and inspect the car carefully, since long-term ownership risk depends heavily on how well the hybrid system and related components were maintained.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Prius?

At 64.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and any signs of prior bodywork or unresolved warning lights. If you’re shopping for a hybrid, it’s especially smart to confirm that the car has been serviced consistently and that all major systems operate as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The L Eco starts with a 7-inch touchscreen, cloth upholstery, push-button start, and standard driver-assistance features, while the LE adds a rear windshield wiper, parking sensors, seat-back pockets, and a cargo cover. The XLE adds 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, synthetic leather upholstery, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and wireless charging. The Limited adds a larger 11.6-inch touchscreen, a head-up display, and premium audio, but that larger screen loses Android Auto support.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder hybrid setup with an electric motor and battery for 121 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, and an all-wheel-drive variant adds a second rear electric motor that works only at lower speeds.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, active park assist, and lane-tracing assist are available, with some features reserved for higher trims or options.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa compatibility, Bluetooth, WiFi hotspot capability, and three USB ports. The Limited upgrades to an 11.6-inch screen with a split layout and available premium audio, but it drops Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: The Eco trim returns 58 mpg city, 53 highway, 56 combined. The standard Prius returns 54 mpg city, 50 highway, 52 combined, and all-wheel drive lowers estimates to 52 mpg city, 48 highway, 50 combined.

Which 2020 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota Prius is offered in 4 trim levels: L Eco, LE, XLE, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• L Eco: This is the efficiency-first choice, and it gives you the Prius experience at the lowest starting point. You still get the core hybrid setup, a 7-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, and the standard safety suite, so it makes sense if you want the best fuel economy and the lowest entry price.
• LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like parking sensors, a rear wiper, and cargo-area convenience features without jumping too far up the price ladder. If you want a more complete ownership experience without paying for luxury extras, this is the trim to focus on.
• XLE: This trim is the comfort upgrade, adding heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, synthetic leather upholstery, wireless charging, and a power driver’s seat. It suits you if you want the Prius to feel more polished for daily commuting and cold-weather use.
• Limited: This is the tech-and-luxury trim, with the largest screen, head-up display, and premium audio. Just keep in mind that the bigger infotainment system loses Android Auto support, so it’s best if those added features matter more to you than that connectivity trade-off.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, while some extra driver-assistance features remain optional or trim-dependent.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Prius?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep discounts everywhere.

• Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 285 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 4.24% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 64.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,066, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota Prius's resale value?

The current average of $21,658 sits slightly above last year's $20,776.

That upward move suggests the Prius is holding buyer interest well, which can help support resale value if you own one for a few years. A model with steady demand and limited bargain pricing tends to be easier to sell when you’re ready to move on. The relatively tight spread between the year-round low and high also points to a market that values the car consistently rather than wildly.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota Prius safe?

The 2020 Toyota Prius earns a five-star rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick accolade from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Available extras include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front-and-rear parking sensors, active park assist, and lane-tracing assist.

One caveat is that the Prius did not reach IIHS’s highest Top Safety Pick+ level because of weaker results in the passenger-side small overlap front crash test and headlight testing.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 64.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 4.24% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong fuel economy, standard advanced safety features, and broad everyday usefulness.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $19,757, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $21,658 average.
• It is reliable, efficient, practical, and safe.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $20,965, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,658 average.
• It adds standard Android Auto and broader driver-assistance coverage.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of efficiency, safety, and everyday practicality, the 2020 is an easy Prius to recommend. If price matters most, the 2019 is the value play, while the 2021 is the better choice if you want the newer tech and can find one at a similar price.
