Used 2020 Toyota Highlander for Sale nearNorfolk, VA

How much does the 2020 Toyota Highlander cost?

Prices have softened 4.19% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 3,356 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare on price and condition.

Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, advanced features, and spacious interior, and many also highlight its safety features. The trade-offs are the front-seat comfort complaints and some concerns about interior material quality, while the overview makes clear that the Highlander is aimed at you if you want a calm, upscale three-row SUV rather than something sporty.

The market backs that up: 37.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise centered on the Highlander’s smooth ride, features, and family-friendly usability. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its calm, easygoing character and notes that Toyota includes two years of maintenance and roadside assistance.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright mechanical drama and more about finding a well-kept example that hasn’t been worn down by family use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Highlander?

At 70.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, interior wear, and any signs of prior repair quality. Because this model is often bought for family duty, condition matters as much as mileage, especially on seats, trim, and other high-touch areas.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Every trim except the base L has projector-beam LED headlights and fog lights, while the Limited and Platinum add prettier LED running lamps and 20-inch wheels. The cabin quality is a major strength, and the upper trims add richer materials and more upscale detailing.
• Powertrain: The Highlander uses a 3.5-liter V6 with either FWD or AWD, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It delivers smooth, brisk acceleration and very good fuel economy for a large SUV.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional.
• Infotainment: Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration come standard. The main touchscreen is 8 inches, and a 12.3-inch screen is available on upper trims, though the interface itself is dated.
• Fuel efficiency: The Highlander FWD is EPA rated at 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. With AWD, it returns 20/27/23.

Which 2020 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, Limited, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Highlander’s core comfort, space, and standard safety equipment at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the model’s main strengths without paying for extras.
• LE: This is the best-value trim. The cost-effectiveness guidance points to the LE as the sweet spot in the low $40,000 range, making it the trim most buyers should cross-shop first.
• XLE: This trim adds more equipment while staying below the luxury-leaning upper trims, so it suits you if you want a more complete family SUV without going all the way to the top.
• Limited: This trim is where the Highlander starts to feel especially upscale, with richer cabin presentation and more premium features. It’s the right pick if you want the most Lexus-like experience without stepping into the top trim.
• Platinum: This is the most fully equipped version, with the most upscale presentation and the largest standard screen. Choose it if you want the Highlander at its most luxurious.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking remain optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Highlander?

The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you have room to shop carefully.

• Deal availability: 37.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,356 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.19% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 70.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $26,966, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota Highlander's resale value?

The current average of $27,507 sits slightly below last year's $28,711.

That price movement suggests the Highlander has already given back some value from its earlier level, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means resale will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.

Because demand remains supported by the Highlander’s strong reputation and broad family appeal, a clean example should still be relatively easy to move later. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander safe?

The 2020 Highlander earns a 2020 Top Safety Pick from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional, so you may want to verify which features are fitted on the specific used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 37.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.19% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 redesign brings a quieter ride, a softer suspension, and a more upscale cabin.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $29,674, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,507 average.
• It adds more standard safety-feature technology.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and a premium-feeling cabin. If you’re willing to pay more for additional standard safety technology, the 2021 is the better alternative.
