CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Highlander
overall

Summary
With 3,086 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,663.00, 31.9% of 2020 Toyota Highlanders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Highlander 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
71.0% of 2020 Highlander models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Highlander stands out by putting comfort ahead of flash. It was redesigned for 2020, and the result is a midsize three-row SUV that emphasizes silent operation, a soft ride, and a cosseting interior. The Highlander is described as the most comfortable midsize SUV, and its upper trims are said to feel and drive just like a Lexus, without the upcharge. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a family SUV that feels calm and upscale rather than exciting.
It also brings standard advanced safety features and a spacious cabin, two qualities that matter a lot in this segment. At the same time, the Highlander is not trying to win over drivers who value sharp responses or standout styling. Its handling is described as poor, and its styling as uninspired, so its strengths are clearly in comfort, space, and an easygoing character rather than driving enjoyment or visual drama.

It’s well-equipped, comfortable, and family-friendly SUV with strong safety tech, a smooth ride, and premium touches (thanks to the platinum trim) like a panoramic moonroof, leather seating, and 12” touchscreen. Its V6 offers solid power and decent fuel efficiency for a 3-row SUV, and overall it feels modern, quiet, and refined. It’s a great value if you want a reliable, upscale daily driver! The main thing it’s missing is more usable third-row and cargo space. The 3rd row is tight for adults and cargo behind it is limited. Otherwise, it’s a strong all-around pick and fits exactly what I was looking for. I would compare this to the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Honda Pilot, and the Ford Explorer.

Absolutely love this car. Great comfortable family vehicle with plenty of space, and features

The ride was smooth, the Highlander is quick and very quiet. I loved many of the features it had, like the posted speed limit on the instrument cluster. What really disappointed me was the passenger seat comfort. The seat bottom only adjusts fron-to-rear, not up or down so I wasn’t as comfortable in it as I was the Hyundai Palisade or the Kia Telluride. It’s still a really good vehicle.

Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.
The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, advanced features, and spacious interior, and many also highlight its safety features and family-friendly usefulness. The Highlander’s comfort-first mission fits buyers who want a calm, upscale three-row SUV rather than something sporty or flashy. The main trade-offs are its poor handling and uninspired styling, which matter less if your priority is everyday comfort and space.
With 31.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise centered on comfort, safety, and the kind of family-friendly usability that tends to hold up well over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the Highlander’s calm, isolated driving character and its ability to cruise effortlessly, which supports the impression of a vehicle built for long-term use. Toyota also includes two years of maintenance and roadside assistance, which adds some early ownership peace of mind.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by heavy family use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Highlander?
At 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the cabin has been heavily used or poorly maintained. Because this model is valued for comfort and family duty, condition matters a lot when you’re comparing similar listings.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Every trim except the base L has projector-beam LED headlights and fog lights, while the higher trims add prettier LED running lamps. The Limited and Platinum also get 20-inch wheels, and the cabin quality rises noticeably as you move up.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with either FWD or AWD, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It delivers smooth, brisk acceleration, and AWD Limited and Platinum models add torque vectoring plus selectable drive modes.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional.
- Infotainment: The standard touchscreen is 8 inches, and a 12.3-inch screen is optional on Limited and standard on Platinum. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration come standard.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD model is rated at 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined, while AWD returns 20/27/23 mpg.
Which 2020 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, but it misses some of the nicer exterior touches found higher up the range. It makes sense only if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable giving up some of the Highlander’s upscale feel.
- LE: This is the best-value trim. It sits in the low $40,000 range and gives you the strongest balance of price and equipment for most shoppers.
- XLE: This is the trim to consider if you want a richer feature set without jumping all the way to the luxury-leaning upper trims.
- Limited: This trim brings a more premium cabin and can be paired with the optional 12.3-inch touchscreen, making it a strong choice if comfort and presentation matter most.
- Platinum: This is the most upscale version, with the 12.3-inch screen standard and the most polished cabin treatment in the lineup.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the range, while blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Highlander?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,202 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.43% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,981.61, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $27,677 sits slightly below last year's $29,265.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to stay realistic on asking price. If you buy well now, you may have less room for appreciation later, so condition and trim choice matter more than ever. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should still be easier to move than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander safe?
The 2020 Toyota Highlander earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. A driver's knee airbag and a special cushion airbag for the front passenger are also standard. Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional, so you may want to verify which driver-assistance features are included on the specific listing you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 redesign emphasizes comfort, a quiet ride, and an upscale cabin.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $29,837, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,677 average.
- It adds additional safety-feature technology as standard equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it already delivers the comfort, space, and safety that define the Highlander. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer example with added standard safety tech, the 2021 is the cleaner upgrade path.
