CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Corolla
overall

Summary
With 2,291 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,571.00, 28.9% of 2020 Toyota Corollas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Corolla 4.69 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
58.6% of 2020 Corolla models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Corolla stands out by adding style and a bit of excitement to a nameplate long associated with affordability, reliability, efficiency, and practicality. It is still presented as a compact sedan that is cheap to buy, dependable, thrifty with fuel, and roomy enough for a frugal family, but the redesigned version brings a more engaging personality to that familiar formula.
That broader appeal is reinforced by a few notable strengths: a manual transmission is available, premium interior materials are part of the package, and advanced safety features come standard. Owners also praise its excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value for the price. The main drawback noted in the test-drive data is uncomfortable seats, and some owners also mention that the sound insulation could be better and that back legroom is a bit tight.

I bought a 2020 Toyota Corolla LE and owned it for about a year and a half. It rides smooth, has great safety features, and is amazing with gas mileage. I was averaging a combined 36.7mpg everywhere I went. I’ve never owned a vehicle so new, so getting used to the fancy new cruise control that matches the speed of the vehicle in front of you took some getting used to. The lane assist was a really cool feature! However, I live in the desert of New Mexico, so if the sun hits the road just right, it’ll bounce off the painted stripes and make it unrecognizable to the sensors. Other than that, it’s a great feature! For a compact car, it has enough space for a single person or a family of two or three. Spacious cargo bay! The leg room is a little tight in the back, especially if the driver or passenger scoots back a little. That being said, I was hoping the seats would be a little more comfy being a 2020 model. Kinda stiff and not super comfortable for 1hr+ rides. Not bad, but could be better. All in all, this is a great car with great safety features that I would recommend to anyone, even a new driver thanks to the warning systems aboard! Love it.

It is a manual transmission. I was searching for the S PLUS model but since they were discontinued, I saw that this model was similar (smart key/push button starter) That is a plus, you will never lock your car with the keys inside. Mainly (the manual Transmission) I have been driving manual transmission for over 30 years, I wish they would never stop making them. I am very impressed with Corollas because of there reliability. The prevoius 3 vehicles all have been Corollas Manual Transmission, the last one was a 2015 S PLUS model I purchased in February 2018 with 54K miles on it. It currently has 391K and I never had a break down or been stranded, not even the clutch, all Ive done was change the oil every 5K, tires, battery, breaks, shocks and struts when needed. Corolla is an excellent reliable vehicle.

CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2020 Toyota Corolla prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2020 Toyota Corolla cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,557 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,786.81 |
| Year-Round High | $16,902.23 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,903 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.05% |
Prices have softened 2.05% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,299 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable number of options to compare. If you find a listing below $15,786.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota Corolla earns a 4.69/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise its excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value for the price. The Corolla also fits shoppers who want a compact sedan that is cheap to buy, dependable, thrifty with fuel, and roomy enough for a frugal family.
The main trade-offs are uncomfortable seats, some road noise, and back legroom that can feel tight. In practical terms, that means you should like the Corolla most if you value efficiency, safety, and everyday usability more than plush comfort.
The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 29.0% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla reliable?
Owners rate it 4.69/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as reliable, dependable, and a car they can count on, with long-term ownership appeal tied to its efficient, trouble-free daily driving character. The expert review also reinforces that theme by calling it cheap to buy, dependable, and thrifty with fuel.
Toyota’s safety and driver-assistance setup is refined and accurate, which adds to the sense that the car is built for steady, low-stress ownership. If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is less about the Corolla’s reputation and more about finding one that has been cared for well and hasn’t accumulated hidden wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Pay close attention to seat comfort, cabin noise, and rear-seat space, since those are the most common ownership complaints. It also makes sense to confirm that the features you want are actually present, because equipment varies by trim.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base L trim is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more premium materials and a more polished cabin feel. The sportier SE and XSE versions look more appealing, and the XSE especially benefits from the upgraded interior presentation.
- Powertrain: Lower trims use a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder with 139 horsepower, while SE and XSE get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 169 horsepower. The SE can also be had with a 6-speed manual, and the more powerful setup is the better fit if you want the Corolla to feel more responsive.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE and optional on LE and SE, but it does not include rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch screen on lower versions and an 8-inch display on LE and higher. Apple CarPlay is available, Android Auto is not, and wireless device charging is available on XSE and XLE.
- Fuel efficiency: The Corolla LE hybrid is rated at 52 mpg combined, while the gas-powered test car returned 31 mpg city, 38 highway, and 34 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The L trim gives you the essentials, but it lacks the more upscale cabin materials and the more appealing sport-oriented look found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LE is the best value for many shoppers because it adds the larger 8-inch display and keeps the Corolla focused on everyday efficiency and ease of use.
- Premium/top trim: The XSE is the most appealing choice if you want the best mix of style, stronger performance, and a more premium-feeling interior.
- Off-road trim: Not applicable here.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE and optional on LE and SE.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to make comparison shopping worthwhile.
- Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,299 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.05% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,786.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Corolla's resale value?
The current average of $16,557 sits slightly below last year's $16,903.
That softer pricing suggests the Corolla is still accessible on the used market, which can help keep demand broad among budget-conscious shoppers. For a future seller, that means resale should remain supported by the model’s reputation, but pricing power may be limited if the car is not especially well equipped or well maintained. Strong condition and desirable trims should matter more when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.69/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla safe?
The redesigned Corolla sedan earns a five-star rating for frontal-impact protection from NHTSA, and the IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Lane Tracing Assist helps keep the car centered in its lane when adaptive cruise control is active.
A key caveat is that blind-spot monitoring is not standard on every trim, and it does not include rear cross-traffic alert. The lane-departure warning alert can also be irritating, which may make some drivers less likely to leave it on.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.05% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.69/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds a more engaging personality, standard advanced safety features, and available manual transmission.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,136, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $16,557 average.
- It adds a limited-production Apex Edition with a track-tuned suspension and sportier hardware.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and a more engaging redesign. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year and a sportier special edition, the 2021 is the more expensive alternative.
