Used 2020 Toyota 4Runner for Sale nearMyrtle Beach, SC

How much does the 2020 Toyota 4Runner cost?

Prices have softened 1.41% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,340 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare trims and condition.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.85/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise its ruggedness, reliability, and value retention, and many also highlight its comfort, safety features, and off-road capability. The trade-offs are familiar: poor value for money, poor fuel economy, and interior materials that feel cheap. That makes it a strong fit if you want a durable SUV that feels built for demanding use rather than everyday polish. With 34.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to reliability, durability, and trouble-free ownership as recurring strengths, with many shoppers valuing how well it holds up over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the engine’s longevity and the 4Runner’s dependable, lumbering character, which fits its rugged mission. Toyota’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical fragility and more about accepting age-related compromises in refinement and efficiency.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?

At 68.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used off-road or in harsh weather. Focus on signs of underbody wear, suspension abuse, interior wear, and any evidence that the vehicle’s rugged life has been harder than average. A clean-looking listing can still hide trail damage, so condition matters as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come standard with cloth, while the SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium come standard with SofTex material. The Limited adds leather upholstery and a more comfort-focused feel, while the Nightshade and Venture trims add blacked-out styling; the Venture also adds 17-inch TRD wheels and a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic transmission, making 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. The engine is described as strong and reliable, but not smooth or efficient, and fuel economy is poor at 16 mpg city, 19 highway, 17 combined.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. Eight airbags are standard. The system is standard equipment, but the lane-departure alert is more reactive than a true lane-keeping assist system.
• Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The system also supports Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, and subscription services, while higher trims add features like a JBL stereo and navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 16 mpg city, 19 highway, 17 combined, and the truck does not improve meaningfully with 2WD.

Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core 4Runner formula without the extra comfort or appearance upgrades. It makes sense if you want the rugged basics and plan to keep the budget in check.
• SR5 Premium: This is the best-value trim if you want a more livable daily driver, since it adds a more upscale feel without moving too far up the price ladder. It is a smart middle ground for shoppers who want comfort but do not need the off-road hardware.
• TRD Off-Road: Choose this if you want the 4Runner’s trail-focused character and the advanced traction systems that support it. It is the right pick if off-road use matters more than luxury touches.
• TRD Off-Road Premium: This is the better choice if you want the off-road hardware plus a nicer cabin. It suits buyers who want capability and some extra comfort in the same package.
• TRD Pro: This is the most serious off-road version in the lineup, and it is the one to buy if you want the most capability-focused setup. It is the trim for buyers who care most about rugged use and are willing to pay for it.
• Limited: This is the comfort-first choice, with leather upholstery and a more upscale presentation. It is the trim to consider if you want the 4Runner’s image and capability but spend more time on-road than off it.
• Nightshade Special Edition: This trim is mainly about stealth styling and blacked-out trim pieces. It is best if you want a distinctive look more than a major equipment upgrade.
• Venture Special Edition: This trim adds off-road-oriented style and equipment, including 17-inch TRD wheels and a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack. It is a good fit if you want a more adventurous look and some added utility.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, so you do not need to move up the lineup to get the core driver-assistance suite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,340 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.41% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 68.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $33,540, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $34,874 sits slightly below last year's $35,375.

That modest decline suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may slightly soften your position if you sell soon. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for durability and strong demand helps support long-term value. If you keep the truck in clean condition and avoid accident history, you should have a better chance of preserving resale appeal than with many other SUVs.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns Good ratings from IIHS in most crash tests, but it scores Marginal in the small overlap front: driver-side test and earns four-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with three-star ratings in the rollover test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. Eight airbags are also standard. The main caveat is that the 4Runner’s high center of gravity and reactive lane-departure alert system leave you wanting a more active lane-keeping setup, and the Marginal IIHS result is worth noting when you compare it with newer rivals.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.41% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Toyota adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense P for a more modern ownership experience.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $31,669, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $34,874 average.
• It offers a proven, no-nonsense off-road SUV with less emphasis on newer tech.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $36,805, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $34,874 average.
• It leans harder into rugged utility with a stronger reputation for reliability and resale value.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, updated tech, and the classic 4Runner formula, the 2020 is the primary path to consider. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money while keeping the same core rugged appeal. If you are willing to spend more for a newer-year alternative, the 2021 is the better step-up for buyers who value the model’s long-term reputation.
