Used 2020 Toyota 4Runner for Sale near Charleston, SC

How much does the 2020 Toyota 4Runner cost?

Prices have softened 1.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,368 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare by trim, mileage, and condition.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.85/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise its ruggedness, reliability, and value retention, and they also highlight comfort, safety features, and off-road capability. In practical terms, that lines up with the 4Runner’s purpose-built character: it is aimed at you if you want a rugged SUV that feels at home on dusty roads, snowy mountain routes, and other demanding terrain.

The trade-offs are just as clear. The expert review points to poor value for money and poor fuel economy, while also noting interior materials that feel cheap.

With 35.3% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively if you want the right mix of condition and price.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback emphasizes reliability, durability, and value retention, and it also describes the 4Runner as a vehicle people can count on over time. The expert review reinforces that impression by calling out the engine’s longevity as a testament to its reliability.

Toyota also includes a maintenance perk in the ownership experience: the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright dependability and more about accepting an older, rugged design with compromises in efficiency and refinement.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?

At 68.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body condition, underbody wear, and signs of hard use. Because this model is often bought for rugged duty, it makes sense to focus on how the vehicle was treated rather than just how it looks in photos. Pay extra attention to maintenance records, tire wear, and any evidence of off-road damage or repair work.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come standard with cloth, while the SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium come standard with SofTex material. The Limited leans more toward comfort with leather upholstery, and the Venture adds a stealth look plus 17-inch TRD wheels and a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic transmission, making 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. The setup is built for durability and off-road use more than smoothness or efficiency, and it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. Eight airbags are standard. The safety suite is helpful, but the lane-departure system is reactive rather than a more active lane-keeping setup.
• Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The system also supports Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, a single USB media port in SR5 and TRD Off-Road trims, and subscription services such as Sirius XM Radio, Safety Connect, and WiFi Connect.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 16 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined.

Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core 4Runner formula without the extra comfort or appearance upgrades. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the model and plan to prioritize capability over amenities.
• SR5 Premium: This adds a more upscale feel than the SR5, including SofTex upholstery, while keeping the 4Runner’s basic rugged character intact. It is a sensible value choice if you want a better cabin without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the trim to target if you want the 4Runner’s off-road personality to come through more clearly. It also includes a single USB media port, and it suits you best if trail use matters more than luxury touches.
• TRD Off-Road Premium: This is the stronger pick if you want the off-road hardware and a more comfortable interior together. The SofTex upholstery makes it a better fit if you want a more polished daily driver without giving up the trail-focused setup.
• TRD Pro: This is the most serious off-road-oriented trim in the lineup, and it is the one for buyers who want the most capability-focused version. It is the right choice if you are willing to pay for the most rugged expression of the 4Runner.
• Limited: This is the comfort-first trim, with leather upholstery and a more chrome-heavy look. It is the best fit if you want the 4Runner’s image and capability but care more about a more upscale cabin.
• Nightshade Special Edition: This trim leans into a stealthier appearance with blacked-out trim pieces. It is mainly for you if style matters as much as the 4Runner’s rugged identity.
• Venture Special Edition: This trim adds 17-inch TRD wheels and a standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack, giving it a more adventure-ready look and setup. It is a strong pick if you want a distinctive appearance with practical outdoor gear.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance suite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,368 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.25% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 68.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $33,535, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $34,772 sits slightly below last year's $35,211.

That modest decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may also mean future resale gains are likely to be gradual rather than dramatic. For a seller, the 4Runner’s pricing pattern shows that demand remains steady enough to support value, but not so hot that you should expect a quick premium just because it is a 4Runner.

The model’s reputation for durability and strong owner satisfaction should help it stay desirable with used shoppers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns Good ratings from IIHS in all crash tests except the small overlap front: driver-side test, where it scores Marginal. It also earns four-star ratings overall from NHTSA and three-star ratings in the rollover test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The 4Runner also comes with eight standard airbags.

The main caveat is the IIHS small overlap front: driver-side result, which is weaker than the rest of its crash-test performance. The high center of gravity also makes the SUV’s rollover result worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.25% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense P.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $31,539, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $34,772 average.
• It offers a more old-school, off-road-first character with proven durability.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $36,749, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $34,772 average.
• It leans into rugged utility with strong reliability and resale appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, updated tech, and standard safety gear, the 2020 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter and you mainly want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness, the 2019 can save you money. If you are willing to pay more for a newer example, the 2021 is the better path for buyers who want to stay closer to the model’s later-year market.
