CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Tesla Model S

Summary
With 371 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,682, 30.5% of 2020 Tesla Model S listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Tesla Model S 4.67 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Tesla Model S stands out as a luxury electric sedan that helped define the modern EV era and still feels distinctive because of its software-driven approach. Tesla’s buying guide describes the Model S as revolutionary when it arrived, with more than 200 miles of EV range, a minimalist interior, and an exterior shaped more by aerodynamics than fashion. For 2020, it also benefits from the Model S’s long-running strengths: advanced technology, impressive range, and sports car-style acceleration.
By this point in its life, the Model S had already accumulated a long list of updates, and the buying guide notes that 2019 brought the 100-kWh battery pack as standard, simplified model names, and about 370 miles of range for Long Range versions. It also says all Model S vehicles were being equipped with the Full Self-Driving Computer, laying the groundwork for FSD Beta released in 2020, and that the last year of this second generation was generally considered a great year thanks to better fit and finish and fewer software glitches. For shoppers, that makes the 2020 Model S appealing as a mature version of a car known for constant tech improvements, fast charging, and a cabin centered around its large touchscreen.
There are still tradeoffs to consider. The buying guide lists no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, poor build quality, and a weird steering yoke in some models among the Model S’s drawbacks, while owner feedback for the 2020 model echoes the strong range, technology, and performance but notes that the interior may feel less luxurious than expected for the price. That mix of standout capability and a few notable omissions is part of what makes the 2020 Tesla Model S so distinctive.

Reviewed a 2020 Tesla Model S on Jul 3, 2020
This is one of the best EVs on the market with superior range (rated for 400 miles plus) Handling is also great with active suspension. This is a hi-tech car with constant downloads to the software to make it even better. All that said, it is in serious need of a re-design from a body standpoint. the interior is very nice but not what you would expect from a $100k plus car compared to others in this price range. But as I said from a technology standpoint for EVs no one comes close.

Is the 2020 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with owners repeatedly highlighting its strong range, advanced technology, and performance. What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Tesla Model S?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with a history report so you can confirm accident status, title history, and any major repairs. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of the interior, electronics, and overall condition, since the Model S’s appeal depends heavily on its tech and cabin experience. Pay close attention to how the car presents in person, because a used example that looks and feels well maintained is especially important in this price range.

Demand should remain supported by the model’s strong owner satisfaction and its distinctive place in the EV market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 7.40% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2020 Model S makes sense if you want a mature version of Tesla’s luxury EV formula with strong owner approval and a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If you’re more price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years to see whether a lower entry price outweighs the 2020’s balance of satisfaction, inventory, and market momentum.
