How much does the 2020 Subaru Legacy cost?

Prices have softened 11.66% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 505 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of used examples to compare.

Is the 2020 Subaru Legacy a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Subaru Legacy earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

The Legacy’s appeal is rooted in practicality: it leans into efficiency, safety, and standard all-wheel drive, which makes it especially relevant if you want a sensible daily driver with extra confidence in poor weather. The expert review also points to strong value for money, while noting that the sedan segment has lost ground to crossovers.

The main trade-offs are its unintuitive technology and underwhelming base engine. If you want a straightforward sedan that prioritizes usefulness over flash, the Legacy fits that brief well.

Good and great deals percentage: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2020 Subaru Legacy reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Legacy’s reliability case is supported by its practical design, standard all-wheel drive, and safety-first setup. The expert review also describes the car as a pragmatic choice with fuel-efficient engines and easy-to-use interiors, even though the tech can be frustrating.

Its performance content also notes that the base powertrain is responsive enough for city and suburban driving, and the stop-start system is meant to conserve fuel. For used buyers, the biggest long-term ownership risk is that the complicated infotainment setup may age less gracefully than the rest of the car.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Legacy?

At 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks bodywork, electronics, and the condition of the safety and infotainment systems. Because this model leans heavily on technology, it’s smart to test every screen, menu, and driver-assistance function yourself.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim comes with remote keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, dual 7-inch touchscreens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, voice recognition, and Subaru EyeSight, while the Premium adds 17-inch alloy wheels, four USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power moonroof, 10-way power front seats, and the All-Weather Package with heated seats, heated mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer.
• Powertrain: The base, Premium, Sport, and Limited trims use a 2.5-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, while the Limited XT and Touring XT use a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer 4-cylinder with 260 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque; the base engine returns 27 mpg city, 35 highway, 30 combined, and the turbo drops to 24 city, 32 highway, 27 combined.
• Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is standard and includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control, along with a head-up light alert system, a stop-and-go traffic alert, a reversing camera, traction control, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags.
• Infotainment: The Legacy uses a massive 11.6-inch touchscreen on higher trims, while the base trim uses dual 7-inch touchscreens; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system also has over-the-air CarPlay functionality mentioned in the test-drive notes.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 27 mpg city, 35 highway, 30 combined, while the turbocharged engine is rated at 24 city, 32 highway, 27 combined.

Which 2020 Subaru Legacy trim should I buy?

The 2020 Subaru Legacy is offered in 6 trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT, and Touring XT.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the core safety and convenience features.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, power moonroof, 10-way power front seats, dual-zone climate control, and the All-Weather Package with heated seats and heated mirrors.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look, with 18-inch alloys, a trunk spoiler, a more aggressive front fascia, LED fog lights, red contrast stitching, and aluminum alloy pedal covers.
• Limited: This is the comfort-focused upgrade, adding adaptive LED headlights, leather upholstery, heated rear seats, driver memory settings, and an 8-way power front passenger seat.
• Limited XT: Pick this if you want the turbocharged engine plus extras like a heated steering wheel and a distracted-driving monitor.
• Touring XT: This is the top-end choice if you want the turbo engine with the most luxury content, including power-folding mirrors, full Nappa leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated front seats.

Subaru EyeSight is standard, so even the base trim includes the core safety package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Legacy?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.

• Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 505 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.66% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 70.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,349, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Subaru Legacy's resale value?

The current average of $17,349 sits slightly below last year's $19,638.

That price movement suggests the Legacy has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it easier to sell into a value-conscious market later. If you buy at the current average or below, you may have less room for appreciation, but you also reduce your upfront exposure.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Subaru Legacy safe?

The 2020 Subaru Legacy earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with Subaru’s EyeSight suite of driver-assistance features, including forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Standard safety equipment also includes a reversing camera, traction control, tire pressure monitoring, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags.

The system also includes a stop-and-go alert that can warn you when traffic ahead starts moving again. That said, the Legacy’s safety advantage is strongest because these features are standard, not because of any trim-specific upgrade path.

Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.66% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines standard AWD, strong value, and a more mainstream interior push than earlier versions.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $19,524, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $17,349 average.
• It adds standard AWD with a broader comfort-and-efficiency focus.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative for shoppers who want to stay closer to the latest version.
