The Impreza is Subaru’s compact car. Available as a sedan or a 5-door hatchback, it does battle against the Volkswagen Jetta and Golf, Hyundai Elantra and Elantra GT, and Honda Civic. For 2020, it gets some light styling updates. From the outside, Subaru subtly altered the Impreza’s front grille, bumper, and taillights. You also get the option of a new exterior color: Ocean Blue Pearl. Under the hood, however, it’s business as usual. Every Impreza comes standard with a 2.0-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine with 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on lower trims, but you can upgrade to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters. Like most Subaru models, the Impreza includes all-wheel drive (AWD) on every configuration. The Impreza achieves fuel economy as high as 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 26 combined with the manual transmission or 28/36/31 with the CVT. The Impreza splits its features across four trims: Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited. Included on the Base trim are 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, cloth upholstery, a 6.5-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 60/40 split-folding seat. Options consist of 16-, 17-, or 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, body-color heated side mirrors, a power driver’s seat, keyless access and start, automatic headlights, an 8.0-inch infotainment system, and a moonroof. The Impreza gets Subaru’s EyeSight technology on all configurations equipped with the CVT. It comprises automatic pre-collision braking, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and lead-vehicle start alert. New for 2020 are automatic power door locks, which automatically unlock in the event of a collision. The only options are blind-spot monitoring with lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert. Subaru tends to achieve excellent safety scores, and the Impreza is no exception: both body styles received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) Top Safety Pick + award in 2019. The Impreza offers a competitive range of compact vehicles with the benefit of standard AWD.
