The Mitsubishi Outlander 3-row compact crossover competes with the Nissan Rogue, Hyundai Palisade, and Volkswagen Tiguan. For 2020, it gets minor updates to safety and driver-assistance features and a new infotainment option. Last year’s ES, SE, LE, SEL, and GT trims return for 2020. The ES comes with 7-passenger seating, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch infotainment system, LED daytime running lights, an electronic parking brake, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Driver-seat power lumbar and a reshaped second-row seat with charging ports are new for 2020. There’s also now a Special Edition (SP) trim that slots between the LE and SEL trims. It comes with front, side, and rear air dams; a black hood badge; black door-handle covers; and Special Edition badging. Other than that, Mitsubishi offers a new 8.0-inch infotainment system on higher trims, while a new Mitsubishi Power Sound System replaces last year’s Rockford-Fosgate unit. Most versions of the Outlander employ a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder capable of 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. That engine comes with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and either front- or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD). The GT trim comes with a 3.0-liter V6 engine packing a beefier 224 hp and 215 lb-ft, along with a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD. As far as fuel economy goes, the Outlander gets 25 mpg city, 30 highway, 27 combined for the 4-cylinder with FWD and 24, 29, 26 with AWD. The V6 manages 20, 27, 22, albeit on premium fuel. Forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams are newly standard on SE and above grades. Adaptive cruise control and a multi-view reversing camera come on higher trims. With all optional equipment, the Outlander achieved a 2019 Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
