CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 478 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,006.00, 31.8% of 2020 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
70.9% of 2020 MAZDA3 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out for looking sharper than the average compact sedan while also costing more. Mazda redesigned the Mazda3 in 2019 with the aim of pushing the car closer to near-luxury territory, and the result is a compact model that feels more premium than many mass-market rivals. That upscale impression is a big part of its appeal, especially for buyers who want a small car that emphasizes style and refinement.
It also brings together easy-to-use technology and standard advanced safety features, which adds to its everyday value. At the same time, the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 is not the most practical choice in its class: the back seat is cramped and cargo space is limited. Those tradeoffs make it a better fit for shoppers who prioritize design, a polished cabin feel, and safety equipment over maximum roominess.

The Mazda 3 really shines compared to other compact cars because it feels so much more fun and engaging to drive, with sharp handling, responsive steering, and even the option for all-wheel drive or a turbo engine if you want more power. Inside, it feels more like a luxury car than an economy sedan, thanks to its quiet cabin, high-quality materials, and sleek design. On top of that, it’s packed with modern safety features and earns strong crash-test ratings, which adds a lot of peace of mind. The trade-offs are that the back seat and trunk aren’t the most spacious, the ride can feel a little firm on rough roads, and the higher trims can get pricey. When you compare it to other cars, the Mazda 3 is definitely more stylish and fun than the Toyota Corolla, though the Corolla has hybrids and a long reputation for reliability; it feels more upscale than the Honda Civic, though the Civic offers more space and resale value; and it’s nicer to drive than the Hyundai Elantra, even if the Elantra is usually cheaper at the entry level. Overall, the Mazda 3 is a great choice if you care about style, quality, and the joy of driving, rather than just getting the most space or the lowest price.

Absolutely amazing interior. Great styling. Good driving experience. Great sizing for a smaller size car.

It’s got great power, rides beautifully and is a joy to drive with a 6 speed manual. Red leather interior. Nothing better!

With the exception of the VW Golf/GTI, no other non-luxury brand offers this level of refinement, features and driving enjoyment in a compact. The interior is on par with the luxury brands, its impeccably handsome both inside and out, and it leaves wanting nothing more for the driver, besides maybe a little more power (which you can now get with the recently added turbo). Backseat passengers could use a little more room and trunk is smallish, even for the class, but both are adequate for most families and it excels everywhere else.

Drivers consistently praise the stunning design, amazing interior, and enjoyable driving experience. They also highlight the luxurious feel and advanced safety features, which line up with the car’s upscale positioning.
The main trade-offs are limited power and limited cargo space, and the expert notes also point to a cramped back seat and a less practical layout than some rivals.
Given the overview’s focus on style, refinement, and safety, this is a strong fit if you want a compact car that feels more premium than most mass-market alternatives.
Only 24.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the best examples may still require quick action.
Is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as dependable in the ways that matter most to used-car shoppers, with praise for its enjoyable driving experience, luxurious feel, and advanced safety features. The feedback also suggests it’s a car people feel good about living with over time.
The expert notes reinforce that impression by describing the engine as good and predictable, with a powertrain that should feel straightforward in everyday use.
Mazda also positions the car as a bargain relative to entry-level luxury rivals, which can help ownership feel rewarding if you value the overall package.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s premium ambitions match your needs for space and practicality.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda MAZDA3?
At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or interior wear that doesn’t match the mileage. Focus on condition first, because this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and presented.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Premium Package adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a blacked-out mesh grille, creamy white leather, and a head-up display, while lower trims get less upscale lighting and equipment.
- Powertrain: All 2020 Mazda3s use a 2.5-liter SkyActiv four-cylinder engine with 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, and the manual transmission is limited to front-wheel-drive hatchback models with the preferred or premium package.
- Safety package: Mazda’s driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and dynamic brake support. Lower trims get Acceptable headlights, while the Premium Package’s LED headlights rate Good.
- Infotainment: The cabin centers on an 8.8-inch display with no touchscreen functionality, controlled by a rotary dial. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and Sirius XM satellite radio are included or available, and the software is described as faster than past versions.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says it gets 25 mpg in the city and 33 on the highway.
Which 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 2 trim levels: Preferred and Premium.
Here's the short version:
- Preferred: This is the better-value choice if you want the Mazda3’s upscale design, standard safety tech, and strong everyday driving manners without stretching to the top trim. It also gives you access to the manual transmission on the front-wheel-drive hatchback, which makes it the more engaging pick for shoppers who want a little extra involvement.
- Premium: This is the trim to choose if you want the most polished version of the car, including the 18-inch alloy wheels, premium interior touches, and the head-up display. It’s the right fit if you care most about the Mazda3’s near-luxury feel and want the most complete presentation.
The Premium Package’s LED headlights earn a Good rating, while lower trims receive an Acceptable score for their headlights.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda MAZDA3?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without assuming every listing is a bargain.
- Deal availability: 24.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 498 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.04% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,073.14, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $17,993 sits slightly below last year's $18,949.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may face some pressure if the trend continues. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to the prior-year average.
The Mazda3’s strong styling, premium feel, and safety reputation should help it stay appealing to used shoppers. Cars with a clear identity and broad appeal tend to hold attention better than more ordinary compact models.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
Labeled a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Mazda3 also received a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda’s driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and dynamic brake support.
One caveat is that lower trims receive Acceptable headlights, while the Premium Package’s LED headlights rate Good.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 24.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.04% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model combines upscale styling, standard advanced safety features, and a premium-feeling cabin.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $16,920, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $17,993 average.
- It delivers an upscale, refined, and genuinely athletic feel.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,567, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $17,993 average.
- Turbo power returns with a more refined, mature driving character.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, style, and safety, the 2020 is the primary path to consider. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2019 is the cheaper alternative, while the 2021 makes sense if you want to spend more for the turbocharged upgrade.
