Is the 2020 Lexus ES a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Lexus ES earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the luxury feel, smooth driving experience, quiet cabin, and comfortable interior. Those themes line up well with the car’s comfort-first mission, especially if you want a relaxed commuter or long-distance cruiser.

The main trade-offs are its higher price versus some rivals and its fairly pedestrian performance. The overview also points to limited cargo space, so this is better suited to everyday comfort than utility or excitement.

With 41.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.

Is the 2020 Lexus ES reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a car that feels dependable, comfortable, and easy to live with over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the ES’s calm, refined character and its focus on making commuting and road trips uneventful, which supports the impression of a trouble-free ownership experience.

The 2020 model also benefits from standard advanced safety equipment, which adds confidence for daily use. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Lexus ES?

At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on signs of prior damage, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any interior wear that suggests harder-than-average use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 350 FWD base trim includes a power moonroof, synthetic leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity entry, push-button start, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Luxury trim adds perforated leather seats, woodgrain trim, ambient cabin lighting, and the Premium Package content, while the Ultra Luxury trim adds a hands-free power trunk, semi-aniline leather upholstery, a power rear-window sunshade, and manual side-rear window shades. The F Sport stands apart with a unique black mesh grille, lower front valence, dark window accents, unique 19-inch alloy wheels, aluminum trim accents, unique heated and ventilated front bucket seats, aluminum pedals, and an instrument panel unique to the trim.
• Powertrain: The ES uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 302 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque routed through an eight-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels. It is tuned for confident acceleration rather than excitement, and the ride remains the priority.
• Safety package: Every ES comes standard with Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, which includes forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high beams, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keep assist, and lane-tracing assist. There are no trim-level gaps in that standard suite.
• Infotainment: The standard screen is 8 inches, with an available 12.3-inch upgrade. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the system uses Lexus Remote Touch rather than a touchscreen. The car can also be equipped with a 17-speaker Mark Levinson stereo and a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The ES 350 returns 22/32/26 mpg, while the ES 350 F Sport returns 22/31/25 mpg.

Which 2020 Lexus ES trim should I buy?

The 2020 Lexus ES is offered in 4 trim levels: 350 FWD, Luxury, Ultra Luxury, and F Sport.

Here's the short version:

• 350 FWD: This is the value play if you want the ES experience at the lowest entry point. You still get the core comfort and tech features, including the 8-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the standard safety suite.
• Luxury: This is the best-value upgrade if you want a more upscale cabin without jumping too far in price. The added perforated leather, woodgrain trim, ambient lighting, and Premium Package content make it feel meaningfully richer.
• Ultra Luxury: Choose this if you want the most comfort-focused ES. The hands-free trunk, semi-aniline leather, rear sunshade, and manual side shades make it the most pampering version.
• F Sport: Pick this if you want the sportiest-looking ES, with unique exterior and interior touches, but keep expectations in check because the car still prioritizes comfort over performance.

The standard safety package is shared across the lineup, so your trim choice is mostly about comfort, appearance, and convenience features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Lexus ES?

It’s a favorable time to shop if you want a stable market with a decent amount of inventory and a meaningful share of well-priced listings.

• Deal availability: 41.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 846 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 69.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $28,482, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Lexus ES's resale value?

The current average of $29,713 sits slightly below last year's $29,746.

That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price pattern can make it easier to estimate your car’s future value and avoid sharp depreciation surprises.

The ES’s strong reputation for comfort and reliability should help it remain appealing to used buyers. Well-kept examples with clean history and desirable equipment are likely to hold attention better than neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Lexus ES safe?

The 2020 Lexus ES earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Every 2020 Lexus ES comes standard with Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, which includes forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high beams, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keep assist, and lane-tracing assist. That gives you a broad standard safety package across the lineup.

The car also includes a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, stability control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. The standard safety coverage is a major strength, especially if you want a luxury sedan that doesn’t make you pay extra for core driver-assistance tech.

Should I buy a 2020 Lexus ES or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 41.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while keeping the ES’s comfort-first formula.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $31,267, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $29,713 average.
• It broadens powertrain choice and leans into the same quiet, comfortable mission.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it combines stable pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and a broad standard safety package. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year and want to compare powertrain flexibility, the 2021 is worth a look, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2020.
