Is the 2020 Hyundai Elantra a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.3/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise its great value, gas mileage, and smooth ride, and many also like the safety features and updated technology. The trade-offs are familiar: some shoppers want more advanced features, and the performance of cruise control comes up as a weak point. For you, that means the Elantra makes the most sense if you want a practical compact sedan that prioritizes everyday usefulness over flash.

The market also shows 33.9% good or great deals, which supports its value-focused appeal.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific car was maintained well and equipped the way you want.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Elantra?

At 62.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or has higher mileage. Focus on body condition, alignment, and how the safety and tech features operate in real-world use. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example with the best maintenance record is usually the smarter buy.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE is the most basic version, with a 5-inch screen and fewer convenience features, while SEL adds a larger 7-inch display plus Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM. Value Edition adds Blue Link Connected Car and Remote plans, Limited brings wireless charging and a premium Infinity audio system, and Sport adds its own performance-oriented hardware and tech package.
• Powertrain: The standard setup is a 147-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a CVT and front-wheel drive. The Eco uses a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and better combined fuel economy, while the Sport uses a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder with 201 horsepower and an independent rear suspension.
• Safety package: Smart Sense is standard and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a driver attention monitor. SEL adds blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, while Limited and Sport add full LED headlights with automatic high-beam operation. The Ultimate Package on Limited adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and Safe Exit Assist.
• Infotainment: Base models get a 5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and a USB port. SEL upgrades to a 7-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the Ultimate Package increases the screen to 8 inches and adds navigation, Blue Link Guidance service, and SiriusXM data services.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard powertrain is rated at 34 mpg in combined driving, while the Eco gets 36 mpg combined.

Which 2020 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2020 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, Limited, and Sport.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the cheapest path into the Elantra, but it’s also the most stripped-down, with the smallest infotainment screen and fewer convenience features. It makes sense if your priority is the lowest possible price and you’re comfortable keeping expectations basic.
• SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 7-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. If you want the strongest mix of everyday features and safety without stretching too far, this is the trim to target.
• Value Edition: This trim builds on SEL with Blue Link Connected Car and Remote plans for the first three years of ownership. It suits you if connected services matter and you want a little more convenience without jumping to the pricier upper trims.
• Eco: Choose this one if fuel economy matters more than performance. Its turbocharged engine and 36 mpg combined rating make it the efficiency pick, though it’s not the most powerful version.
• Limited: This is the comfort-and-tech upgrade, with wireless charging, a premium Infinity sound system, and available 8-inch navigation through the Ultimate Package. It’s the right choice if you want the most upscale Elantra experience.
• Sport: This is the enthusiast-leaning trim, with the 201-horsepower turbo engine and independent rear suspension. It’s the one to buy if you care most about stronger acceleration and a more engaging drive.

Smart Sense is standard across the lineup, while SEL adds blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, and Limited and Sport get full LED headlights with automatic high-beam operation.

What is the 2020 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $13,411 sits slightly above last year's $13,230.

That modest increase suggests the Elantra has held value reasonably well for a compact sedan in this segment. For a future seller, the current trend is encouraging because it shows steady demand rather than a sharp drop. The model’s value-focused reputation should help keep it attractive to budget-minded shoppers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

SEL adds blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, while Limited and Sport add full LED headlights with automatic high-beam operation. Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 62.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.36% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds free scheduled maintenance and new standard safety features.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $11,313, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $13,411 average.
• It stays a strong value pick, but driving dynamics remain ordinary.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $15,431, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $13,411 average.
• It brings a more modern, refined, and performance-focused redesign.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, value, and added safety content, the 2020 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 is the cheaper route; if you want a more modern feel and can spend more, the 2021 is the upgrade path.
