CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Honda Civic
overall

Summary
With 2,567 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,788.00, 29.3% of 2020 Honda Civics for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Honda Civic 4.9 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
55.1% of 2020 Civic models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda Civic stands out as one of the best small cars you can buy, and its appeal comes from a mix of value, variety, and polish. For its 2020 model year, it received minor design tweaks, more standard safety and convenience features, and more manual transmissions. It also continues to offer the performance and quality of more expensive cars while retaining the value and longevity expected of a Honda.
Another strength is how many ways it can fit different buyers. The Civic offers multiple body styles and multiple powertrain options, which helps it cover a wide range of needs without losing its broad appeal. At the same time, it is not without compromise: outdated technology is a noted drawback, and some owners wish it had a bit more power and more USB ports. Even so, the 2020 Honda Civic remains a well-regarded choice for shoppers who want an affordable, reliable small car that is still enjoyable to drive.

Car drives really smooth, a great upgrade from my 2010 Kia Forte Koup. Everything in the car works great (was told most Hondas have AC issues but haven't had any issues with mine so far) highly recommend

I love this car. I just hope that future models will have blind spot on both passenger and drivers side. Otherwise, I think the car is near perfection. Great value for all it has to offer. The heated seats are a plus is cold weather.

How much does the 2020 Honda Civic cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,751 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,330.20 |
| Year-Round High | $19,964.62 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,966 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.08% |
Prices have softened 6.08% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,628 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $18,330.20, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Honda Civic earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, great fuel economy, and fun driving experience. They also highlight the stylish design, tech features, and safety advancements.
The main trade-offs are that it could use a bit more power and more USB ports, and the technology is described as outdated.
For you, that means the Civic makes the most sense if you want an affordable small car that feels polished, versatile, and enjoyable to drive rather than cutting-edge inside.
With 28.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market activity to keep shopping options interesting.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as reliable and affordable, and they also praise its trouble-free feel, good fuel economy, and overall long-term appeal. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the Civic’s value and longevity, which supports the case for dependable ownership.
The powertrains are described as smooth and flawless, which reinforces the sense that the Civic is built to be easy to live with over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is buying a car that has been neglected or driven hard, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Civic?
At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because the Civic is popular and widely available, you can afford to be selective and focus on examples with clean records and consistent maintenance. Pay extra attention to the condition of the infotainment system and interior wear, since the technology is a known weak point.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Civic comes in three body styles, and the standard models emphasize sharp styling and a high-quality cabin, while the Si adds sport seats, LED headlights, a power moonroof, heated front seats, and a more performance-focused feel.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 158 horsepower and a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 174 horsepower; hatchback Sport and Sport Touring models make 180 horsepower, and the Si uses a 205-horsepower version.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, active lane centering, and auto high beams. It is standard on Si models and on every other Civic trim.
- Infotainment: A 7-inch touchscreen is standard on all models except the base LX, and it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Top trims add Garmin-based navigation, and the Sport Touring hatchback gets a garage-door opener.
- Fuel efficiency: The Si is rated at 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined, while the base LX sedan is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined. Most CVT-equipped Civic models reach at least 30 mpg city and as high as 42 mpg highway.
Which 2020 Honda Civic trim should I buy?
The 2020 Honda Civic is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, Sport, and EX.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Civic lineup and are comfortable with the most basic equipment.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more equipment and keeps the Civic’s broad appeal without pushing you into the pricier upper trims.
- EX: Choose this if you want the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and a more upscale everyday setup.
The Civic’s safety package is broad across the lineup, with Honda Sensing standard on every trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Civic?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,628 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.08% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,330.20, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Honda Civic's resale value?
The current average of $18,751 sits slightly below last year's $19,966.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today, but it also means future resale gains may be more gradual if the market stays soft. The Civic’s broad appeal, strong owner satisfaction, and reputation for value should help support demand when you eventually sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic safe?
The Civic earned the Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, and the NHTSA rated it five stars in all categories except the coupe’s passenger frontal crash rating, which was four stars.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, active lane centering, and auto high beams. That suite is standard across the Civic lineup, and Honda also improved the optional LED headlights to help secure the IIHS result.
One caveat is that the coupe’s passenger frontal crash rating is lower than the rest of the Civic’s NHTSA results, so coupe shoppers should pay close attention to that detail.
Should I buy a 2020 Honda Civic or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.08% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Minor design tweaks and more standard safety and convenience features make this year a polished update.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $17,336, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $18,751 average.
- It stays focused on style, value, and performance with only minor tweaks.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,349, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $18,751 average.
- It is the outgoing version of this generation and offers appealing lease and financing deals.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and broad appeal, the 2020 is the smart default. If your priority is spending less, the 2019 is the better value play. If you want the newest nearby alternative and don’t mind paying more, the 2021 is worth a look.
