2020 Genesis G90 test drive
overall
A mansion-size luxury sedan on a ranch budget.
The Genesis G90 exists for a very small number of car buyers. The Korean-made flagship of the Hyundai Motor Group is a satisfying car to drive, yet it has no direct competitor. No one who can afford a full-size luxury sedan suffers from sticker shock, and next to a brand-new Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Lexus, or Jaguar, there is no compelling reason to pay less for a Genesis. But against 2- or 3-year-old luxury sedans, a brand-new G90 can make lots of sense—if you're willing to forgo the high-tech features, performance, and cachet of established brands. Even without the discount price, the G90 is an exceptional vehicle on its own. For 2020, it's changing the entire face of Genesis.

The Genesis g90 is a fairly loaded car and is very beautiful. The right quality is outstanding and the car is very spacious, particularly for tall people. The car has autonomous driving but it is not good going around corners.

Is the 2020 Genesis G90 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Genesis G90 earns a 4.88/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners praise its luxurious appearance, advanced technology, and outstanding performance, and they also value how much car you get for the money compared with BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. The expert review adds that it feels satisfying to drive and delivers a lot of presence for the money, especially if you want a full-size luxury sedan that stands apart from the usual German choices.
The trade-offs are clear: the G90 is described as having fairly pedestrian performance and outdated technology. It makes the most sense if you want a large, comfortable luxury sedan and are willing to give up some high-tech polish and sharper driving dynamics.
Good and great deals account for 31.7% of listings, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Genesis G90 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with buyers especially appreciating the car’s luxury, technology, and value over the long term. The expert review also reinforces that sense of durability by noting the G90’s cheaper parts shared with more pedestrian cars and its lack of air springs, which removes one common luxury-sedan ownership worry.
Genesis also includes 3 years of scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic dependability and more about whether the car has been maintained consistently and kept in good condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Genesis G90?
At 65% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing cars with similar prices. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, wheel or suspension wear, and any evidence that the car’s luxury features or driver-assistance systems have not been working as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 3.3T emphasizes value and strong equipment, while the 5.0 Ultimate adds rear-seat screens and reclining back seats. The base setup already includes a lot, so the main question is whether you need the V8 and rear-passenger extras.
- Powertrain: Two engines are available, both with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic. The twin-turbo V6 is the better choice for most shoppers because it is strong, quiet, and more efficient than the V8.
- Safety package: Highway Driving Assist comes standard, along with forward and reverse emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring, auto high beams, 360-degree cameras, a driver attention monitor, and Safe Exit Assist.
- Infotainment: The G90 uses a unique Genesis infotainment interface with a customizable home screen and swipe-and-pinch controls. The displays could be sharper, and wireless smartphone integration is not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 AWD is rated at 17 mpg city, 25 highway, and 20 combined. The V8 AWD is rated at 15/23/18, and the RWD V8 is rated at 16/24/19.
Which 2020 Genesis G90 trim should I buy?
The 2020 Genesis G90 is offered in 2 trim levels: 3.3T RWD and 5.0 RWD.
Here's the short version:
- 3.3T RWD: This is the best-value trim because it delivers the strongest balance of price, performance, and efficiency. The twin-turbo V6 is described as a phenomenal powertrain, and you still get the full standard safety suite and the core luxury experience.
- 5.0 RWD: Choose this only if you specifically want the V8 and the rear-seat upgrades that come with the 5.0 Ultimate experience. It costs more and does not meaningfully improve everyday driving, so it is more of a luxury indulgence than a smart-value pick.
Highway Driving Assist is standard on all G90 models, so you do not need to move up a trim to get that safety feature.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Genesis G90?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 60 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 65.0% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2020 Genesis G90 safe?
The 2020 Genesis G90 earns the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Highway Driving Assist comes standard, and the G90 also includes forward and reverse emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring, auto high beams, 360-degree cameras, a driver attention monitor, and Safe Exit Assist. That gives you a broad standard safety package, with no trim-level gap called out in the available information.
Should I buy a 2020 Genesis G90 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings updated styling and interior touches while keeping the G90’s strong value focus.
Consider the 2021 if:
- Genesis further strengthens the G90’s world-class luxury image.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of value, comfort, and standard equipment, the 2020 is the smart place to start. If you’re shopping mainly on price, the 2020’s market position makes it especially worth cross-shopping carefully against nearby model years and the best individual listings.
