2020 Genesis G90 test drive
overall
A mansion-size luxury sedan on a ranch budget.
The Genesis G90 exists for a very small number of car buyers. The Korean-made flagship of the Hyundai Motor Group is a satisfying car to drive, yet it has no direct competitor. No one who can afford a full-size luxury sedan suffers from sticker shock, and next to a brand-new Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Lexus, or Jaguar, there is no compelling reason to pay less for a Genesis. But against 2- or 3-year-old luxury sedans, a brand-new G90 can make lots of sense—if you're willing to forgo the high-tech features, performance, and cachet of established brands. Even without the discount price, the G90 is an exceptional vehicle on its own. For 2020, it's changing the entire face of Genesis.

The Genesis g90 is a fairly loaded car and is very beautiful. The right quality is outstanding and the car is very spacious, particularly for tall people. The car has autonomous driving but it is not good going around corners.

Is the 2020 Genesis G90 a good car?
Yes — the 4.88/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.67/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its luxurious appearance, advanced technology, and outstanding performance, and they also value the car’s strong value compared with BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. The expert review adds that it is spacious and an exceptional vehicle on its own, while the main trade-offs are fairly pedestrian performance and outdated technology.
For you, that means the G90 makes the most sense if you want a full-size luxury sedan with a lot of presence and room without paying established-brand prices. With 31.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Genesis G90 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The user feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with buyers saying they can count on its value and quality over time.
The expert review reinforces that impression by noting Hyundai-shared parts and the absence of air-suspension hardware, which reduces some expensive ownership risks. It also includes 3 years of scheduled maintenance, which helps lower early ownership hassle.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about catastrophic reliability and more about whether the car has been maintained properly and kept in good condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Genesis G90?
At 65.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or any signs of uneven wear. Focus on condition first: luxury features, electronics, brakes, tires, and interior wear matter a lot on a sedan like this. Because the G90 is positioned as a value play, you want to make sure the example you buy still feels like a premium car.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin emphasizes upscale materials, quilted seats, matte wood finishes, and a more refined interior presentation, but there’s no panoramic moonroof and the overall layout still trails top-tier luxury rivals. The base trim also misses some of the richer rear-seat amenities found higher up.
- Powertrain: Two engines are available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic. The twin-turbo V6 is the better choice for most buyers, while the V8 adds power but not much extra real-world pace and uses more fuel.
- Safety package: Highway Driving Assist comes standard, along with forward and reverse emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring, auto high beams, 360-degree cameras, a driver attention monitor, and Safe Exit Assist. That standard equipment is a major strength across the lineup.
- Infotainment: The G90 uses a unique Genesis interface with a tiled home screen, customizable first screen, swipe and pinch controls, and seat-posture suggestions. The displays could be sharper, and the system feels less advanced than some rivals.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 AWD configuration is EPA-estimated at 17 mpg city, 25 highway, and 20 combined. The V8 AWD is 15/23/18, and the RWD V8 is 16/24/19.
Which 2020 Genesis G90 trim should I buy?
The 2020 Genesis G90 is offered in 2 trim levels: 3.3T RWD and 5.0 RWD.
Here's the short version:
- 3.3T RWD: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers. It gives you the twin-turbo V6, strong standard equipment, and the core G90 experience without paying extra for the V8’s limited real-world payoff.
- 5.0 RWD: Choose this only if you specifically want the V8 and are comfortable paying more for it. The extra power is real, but the review says it does not make the car meaningfully quicker in everyday driving and it uses more fuel.
Safety equipment is standard across the lineup, including Highway Driving Assist and the full suite of driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Genesis G90?
This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 61 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 65.6% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2020 Genesis G90 safe?
The 2020 Genesis G90 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward and reverse emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring, auto high beams, 360-degree cameras, a driver attention monitor, and Safe Exit Assist. Highway Driving Assist also comes standard on all models.
Should I buy a 2020 Genesis G90 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- For 2020, it changes the entire face of Genesis while delivering standout value.
Consider the 2021 if:
- It brings a broader market shift toward Genesis as a more established luxury contender.
The bottom line: The 2020 is the better pick if you want the strongest value story and don’t mind shopping carefully for condition and history. If you’re price-sensitive, it remains a compelling used luxury sedan; if you want the freshest nearby-year context, the 2021 is worth a look for its broader brand momentum.
