CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Ford Mustang
overall

Summary
With 326 currently listed for sale near Durham, NC and an average price of $23,022.00, 31.3% of 2020 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Ford Mustang 4.73 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
86.2% of 2020 Mustang models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford Mustang stands out because it remains one of the most recognizable American pony cars at a moment when Ford is shifting away from cars and toward trucks, SUVs, and electrification. That gives this Mustang a sense of being both a classic and a transition point, and the source material frames it as especially relevant even as the company’s lineup changes around it. It is also described as a building block for Ford’s future, which adds to its significance beyond simple nostalgia.
What makes the 2020 Ford Mustang appealing is the mix of performance character and everyday value. The car offers multiple powertrain options, is fun to drive, and is presented as an excellent value for money. The nostalgic appeal is reinforced by the Mustang Bullitt special edition, which is highlighted as an especially fitting expression of the nameplate’s design and performance. At the same time, buyers should be aware of its compromises: it does not offer much cargo space, and advanced safety features are not standard.

I put 16000 miles on a new 2020 Mustang. Absolutely no issues. It also got great gas mileage. I averaged 29.6 mpg for the whole time I owned the car. I had the manual which was a little stiff when I first got it but worked in great.

The 2020 Ford Mustang EcoBoost HPP: A Balanced Masterpiece The 2020 Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance Package (HPP) represents a unique blend of spirited performance, efficiency, and everyday practicality. While the Mustang name traditionally evokes the rumble of a V8, this EcoBoost variant proves that turbocharged four-cylinder power can deliver just as much excitement with a modern twist. Under the hood lies a 2.3L turbocharged engine generating an impressive 330 horsepower, enabling a 0-60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds. This level of performance, paired with MagneRide suspension and a Torsen limited-slip differential, gives the EcoBoost HPP dynamic handling characteristics that shine on both the open road and twisty mountain passes. What truly sets this Mustang apart is its balance of performance and fuel efficiency. Rated at 20-27 MPG, it offers a range of approximately 450 miles per tank, making it an excellent choice for road trips. This was evident during a recent drive from Oregon to Colorado, where the EcoBoost excelled at tackling diverse terrains while offering a smooth and comfortable ride. Beyond its performance, the EcoBoost HPP proves to be a stylish and versatile companion. Its sleek design, aggressive stance, and advanced technology make it a car that commands attention. Whether cruising through fall foliage or tearing up the quarter-mile track, this Mustang excels in every scenario. For enthusiasts seeking a thrilling, efficient, and modern take on the Mustang legacy, the EcoBoost HPP is a masterpiece.

Is the 2020 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Ford Mustang earns a 4.73/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its power, fun driving experience, and stylish looks, and many also like the comfort of the seats and the range of engine choices. The trade-offs are that some reviewers want more safety equipment and a smoother automatic transmission. In context, this is a car for you if you want a recognizable pony car with strong performance character and everyday value rather than maximum practicality. With 29.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.73/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with many drivers describing it as fun, satisfying, and worth keeping. The expert review also emphasizes the Mustang’s durable performance character and its ability to deliver both daily drivability and track-ready capability. If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the car was maintained well and not driven hard without proper care.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Mustang?
At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this car can be bought in performance-oriented configurations, it’s also smart to focus on tire wear, brake condition, and evidence of hard use. If you’re considering a higher-spec example, make sure the equipment you want is actually present and functioning as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Bullitt stands out with Dark Highland Green paint, retro 19-inch wheels, unique green stitching, a serialized plaque, and a white cue-ball shifter knob, but it also carries a high price and some cheap interior plastics.
- Powertrain: The lineup spans a 310-horsepower turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder, a 460-horsepower 5.0-liter V8, a 526-horsepower 5.2-liter V8, and a 760-horsepower supercharged 5.2-liter V8; the Bullitt uses a six-speed manual only and returns 14/23/17 mpg.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes a reversing camera, MyKey, and 911 Assist, while blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are available with the Electronics Package; advanced safety features are not standard.
- Infotainment: The car uses a Sync 3 system with an 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and available 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio, but the interface is starting to feel dated.
- Fuel efficiency: The EcoBoost Mustang delivers 21 mpg city, 31 highway, 25 combined, while the Bullitt returns 14/23/17.
Which 2020 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2020 Ford Mustang is offered in 1 trim level: Bullitt.
Here's the short version:
The Bullitt is the clear choice if you want the most distinctive styling and a strong blend of performance and nostalgia. It adds unique appearance details, a more powerful V8 tune, and a manual-only driving experience that suits enthusiasts. The downside is that it is expensive, and the cabin still shows some cost-cutting in places.
The safety package note is simple: you get a reversing camera, MyKey, and 911 Assist, while blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning require the Electronics Package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Mustang?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,226 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.15% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,012.52, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $27,032 sits slightly below last year's $27,911.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale may depend heavily on how well the car is kept. If you choose a clean, well-equipped example, you’re more likely to preserve value than if you buy a rougher car with accident history or visible wear. Strong enthusiast demand can help support pricing, especially for desirable configurations.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Ford Mustang safe?
It earns Good ratings from IIHS in most crashworthiness tests, with an Acceptable rating for driver protection in a small overlap frontal-impact collision. It also earns five-star ratings in every NHTSA test, including rollover resistance.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Mustang’s safety setup is basic by modern standards: you get a reversing camera, MyKey, and 911 Assist, while blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are available only with the Electronics Package. That means you should not expect a broad suite of standard driver-assistance features, and the IIHS small-overlap result is the main caveat to keep in mind.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.15% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Ford’s summary frames this year as a nostalgic transition point for the Mustang nameplate.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $31,460, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,032 average.
- Ford added a new Mach 1 trim.
The bottom line: If you want the better-value buy and like the idea of a distinctive Bullitt-era Mustang, the 2020 is the smarter target. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year with an expanded lineup, the 2021 is the better alternative for shoppers who want the latest trim additions.
