Used 2020 BMW Z4 for Sale nearBaltimore, MD

Is the 2020 BMW Z4 a good car?

Yes — the 2020 BMW Z4 earns 4.7/5 from owners and 7.5/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the Z4’s performance and handling, and they also highlight the comfortable seats, smooth transmission, and powerful engine. That lines up with the car’s use case as a small convertible built for strong performance and lively, responsive driving rather than just style.

The main trade-offs are outdated technology and some road noise from the soft top. Even so, if you want a roadster that feels engaging and comfortable for top-down cruising, the Z4 fits that brief well.

With 40.0% of listings priced as good or great deals, there’s still a meaningful amount of market opportunity.

Is the 2020 BMW Z4 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free in everyday use, with praise centered on the powerful engine, smooth transmission, and the kind of driving experience owners feel they can count on.

The expert review reinforces that sense of confidence by describing the Z4 as a fun little engine package that can deliver strong performance without feeling strained. The cost-effectiveness discussion also notes that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright mechanical weakness and more about how the car was optioned and maintained, especially given the premium hardware and the possibility of higher repair costs if neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW Z4?

At 72.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on bodywork, alignment, and any signs of prior collision repair. It also makes sense to pay close attention to the soft top, visibility, and the condition of the cabin tech, since those are the areas most likely to affect day-to-day ownership satisfaction.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base sDrive30i brings automatic LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming mirrors, automatic climate control, a 10.24-inch touchscreen, navigation, HD Radio, and Apple CarPlay, but Android Auto is missing. The M40i adds the stronger inline-6, 19-inch wheels, and more of the performance-oriented hardware, making it the better fit if you want the most complete driving experience.
• Powertrain: The sDrive30i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, while the M40i uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 with 382 hp and 368 lb-ft. The 4-cylinder is eager and lighter, while the inline-6 is the clear choice if you want the strongest acceleration and the most satisfying performance.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes frontal collision warning with emergency braking and traffic-sign recognition. The Driving Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning, while the Convenience package adds rear cross-traffic alert, automatic parking, satellite radio, adaptive cruise, and smartphone key pairing.
• Infotainment: The Z4 uses a 10.24-inch touchscreen with BMW iDrive, and it includes navigation and HD Radio. Apple CarPlay is offered, but Android Auto is not, and the review notes that the system can be less intuitive than you might expect.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4-cylinder engine can reach 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds, and the review notes that it is the lighter engine with some highway passing limitations. No MPG figure is stated in the available data.

Which 2020 BMW Z4 trim should I buy?

The 2020 BMW Z4 is offered in 2 trim levels: sDrive30i and sDriveM40i.

Here's the short version:

• sDrive30i: This is the value play if you want the Z4’s core roadster experience at the lower starting price. You still get the 10.24-inch touchscreen, navigation, HD Radio, Apple CarPlay, and a well-equipped cabin, plus the lighter 4-cylinder engine that keeps the car lively and eager.
• sDriveM40i: This is the trim to choose if performance is your priority. It brings the inline-6, more power, and more of the performance hardware already included, making it the best fit for buyers who want the Z4 to feel as special as possible on the road.

The safety package is not standard across all trims, so check whether the car you’re considering has the driver-assistance and convenience equipment you want.

Should I buy a 2020 BMW Z4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 40.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 72.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 BMW Z4 stands out for bringing the inline 6-cylinder engine back to the roadster lineup in M40i form, restoring the kind of power that suits its sporty personality.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of performance and value in this generation, the 2020 is the year to focus on. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, the lower-priced sDrive30i can still give you the Z4’s core driving character, but the M40i is the better path if you want the full enthusiast experience.
