Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that still leans into BMW’s performance heritage, even as it has become more comfortable and less overtly sporty than older versions. In this generation, the regular 5 Series models are described as having softened a bit, with steering that is not as precise or engaging as it once was, but the car still offers more driving enjoyment than many of its staid competitors. It also comes with a strong safety roster, including blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings with lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams.
For 2020, the 5 Series lineup included the 530i, 540i, 530e, 540d, and M550i xDrive. The 530i used a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the 540i used a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six with 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The 530e plug-in hybrid gained a larger battery for 21 miles of all-electric range, and the M550i received 67 horsepower and 73 lb-ft of torque more than before, bringing it closer to M5 territory. That mix gives buyers a wide spread of choices, from efficiency to serious performance.
The 2020 model also benefits from the G30’s upscale cabin and technology, though BMW’s systems can be complex to learn. Most reviewers liked the design, but many noted that the steering and suspension in the 530i, 540d, and 540i did not feel as engaging as earlier 5 Series models and that the car felt heavy. Even so, its blend of luxury, available performance, and a better reliability record than the earlier F10 generation makes it appealing to shoppers who want a premium sedan with real substance.

I was skeptical on the power of the M550 since Im coming from a boosted mustang, but the acceleration impresses me. Lots of cool features, too many if you ask me. Remote start is missing from the 2020 and older M550s.

How much does the 2020 BMW 5 Series cost?

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $25,623 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,768 |
| Year-Round High | $27,429 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,042 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.25% |
Prices have softened 5.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,183 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing options.
Is the 2020 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2020 BMW 5 Series earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. The overview describes it as a midsize luxury sedan that still leans into BMW’s performance heritage, while also becoming more comfortable and less overtly sporty than older versions. It also offers more driving enjoyment than many competitors, along with a strong safety roster and a wide spread of powertrain choices, from efficiency to serious performance. With 36.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful number of attractive options to consider.
Is the 2020 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The overview also notes that this generation benefits from a better reliability record than the earlier F10 generation, which is encouraging if you want a premium sedan with substance. Even so, BMW’s systems can be complex to learn, so long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-maintained example with complete service records.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 5 Series?
At 68.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a qualified mechanic. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s technology and safety systems operate as expected. Because this model can be complex, a careful condition check matters as much as mileage or trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 5 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,183 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,768, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $25,623 sits slightly below last year's $27,042.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the car easier to buy now but may also limit near-term upside for a future seller. If you plan to resell later, buying well below the current average matters because it gives you more room to absorb depreciation. Strong condition and clean history will matter more than ever if you want to protect value.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $28,785, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $25,623 average.
- It adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and a larger infotainment touchscreen.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the stronger starting point because pricing has eased and deal availability is decent. If you’re willing to pay more for the refresh and newer tech, the 2021 is the better secondary path for buyers who prioritize updated features over price.
