How much does the 2020 BMW 3 Series cost?

Prices have softened 6.95% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,424 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.14/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating, which points to broad appeal with clear enthusiast leanings. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Drivers repeatedly praise its performance, comfortable interior, and beautiful design, with especially strong enthusiasm for the M340 variant’s power and driving dynamics. The expert notes also emphasize that it is fun to drive and comfortable, which helps it work as more than just a weekend toy.

The trade-offs are just as clear: the design can be polarizing, and value is a recurring concern. That matters because the overview frames this as a premium sedan for buyers who care about driving feel first, so you should expect to pay for the experience rather than for bargain pricing.

Only 37.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market rewards patience but still offers some opportunities.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.14/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time, with praise centered on its comfortable interior, performance, and overall appeal. The expert notes also reinforce a sense of durability and confidence through the car’s free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles of ownership, which helps reduce early ownership friction.

The same feedback also suggests you should watch for the usual used-luxury-car risks: if you buy one that has been driven hard or poorly maintained, repair and upkeep costs can climb quickly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

At 70.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a full vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had any prior damage or multiple owners. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of wear that could hint at harder use, because this model’s premium positioning makes deferred upkeep more expensive to unwind later.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 330i starts at $40,750 and the M340i rises to $56,000; the M340i adds a much more serious performance character, while the 330i is the more accessible entry point. The base car is still appealing for enthusiasts, but the M340i is the standout if you want the strongest driving experience.
• Powertrain: The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive in the tested version. BMW also highlights variable sport steering and a rear M Sport differential as part of the performance package.
• Safety package: BMW says you need to option two Driving Assistance packages to get all of the brand’s latest advanced driver-assistance systems. The standard lane-keeping assist is described as abrupt, and the expert suggests you may want to skip the packages if you do not value those features highly.
• Infotainment: The system uses a touchscreen, natural voice recognition, gesture control, and the familiar center-console controller. The touchscreen is described as intuitive, and the voice assistant can handle natural commands for navigation, climate, stereo, and more.
• Fuel efficiency: No fuel-economy figure is stated in the available data.

Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i and M340i.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the entry point, starting at $40,750, and it gives you the core 3 Series experience without the M340i’s higher price. It should suit you if you want the badge, the driving feel, and a lower buy-in.
• M340i: This is the best-value trim if you care most about performance, because the expert notes make clear that it delivers the most compelling driving experience in the lineup. It adds the turbocharged inline-six, stronger hardware, and the most enthusiast-focused setup.

BMW says you need to option two Driving Assistance packages to get all of the latest driver-assistance systems.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 37.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,424 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.95% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 70.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,616, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $23,778 sits slightly below last year's $25,552.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point if you plan to keep the car for a while. For a future seller, it also means you should be realistic about depreciation and avoid overpaying upfront if resale matters to you.

Because the model still has strong enthusiast appeal, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than ordinary sedans. Cars with desirable equipment, clean history, and strong condition should hold buyer interest better than neglected examples.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.14/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW says you need to option two Driving Assistance packages to get all of its latest advanced driver-assistance systems. The lane-keeping assist is described as abrupt, and the expert notes suggest the systems are accurate but not always especially smooth.

That means you should pay close attention to which safety equipment is actually installed on any used example you consider, especially if you want the full ADAS suite rather than a lightly equipped car.

Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 37.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.95% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.14/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 stands out for its especially strong performance focus and the arrival of the M340i.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $20,382, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $23,778 average.
• It emphasizes BMW’s classic small-sport-sedan formula with a more software-forward feel.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $25,169, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,778 average.
• It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid for buyers who want efficiency without leaving the 3 Series lineup.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of driving enjoyment and current-market value, the 2020 is the sweet spot. If price is your top priority, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes more sense if you want the newer lineup and the plug-in hybrid option.
