Why it stands out
The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon stands out as a stylish alternative to the familiar crossover SUV formula. It is aimed at drivers who want a roomy and practical vehicle with added foul-weather traction, but do not want to drive one of the same SUVs as everyone else. That combination gives it a distinctive appeal: it delivers everyday usefulness while looking and feeling less conventional than the typical family hauler.
It also brings a more engaging personality than many practical vehicles in its class. The available expert assessment highlights its stylish design, fun-to-drive character, and excellent value for money. The main drawback noted is unintuitive technology, so buyers drawn to the Arteon’s design and driving feel may still need patience with its controls.

Until recently I had a 17 Passat R-line 1.8T (totalled unfortunately). I test drove the Arteon R-line and was impressed with the power (268 HP), but... It was a far more expensive car, but really offered nothing more than the Passat, other than the additional 98 horsepower. I test drove a used 19 Arteon (asking price 28,500), and didnt feel that the value was there. I would be more likely to buy a 22 Passat R-line 2.0T for a slightly higher price.

How much does the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,474 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,117 |
| Year-Round High | $19,416 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,389 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.72% |
Prices have softened 4.72% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 100 listings available, which suggests a modest but workable amount of inventory for shoppers.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon a good car?
Generally — it earns a 4/5 user rating and an 8.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, and Cost effectiveness.
The Arteon stands out as a stylish alternative to the usual crossover SUV formula, with a roomy interior and practical hatchback utility. It also brings a more engaging personality than many practical vehicles in its class, and the expert assessment highlights its stylish design, fun-to-drive character, and excellent value for money.
The main trade-off is unintuitive technology, and the expert notes that some controls and voice recognition are not especially rewarding to use. Even so, if you want everyday usefulness without blending in with the typical family hauler, the Arteon fits that use case well.
33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which points to a decent amount of market opportunity.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Arteon’s overall package leans practical and well-rounded, with a roomy cabin, strong utility, and a powertrain that is described as quick enough for real-world driving. The expert assessment also emphasizes that it is enjoyable to drive and comfortable for all.
Its dependability story is helped by the fact that Volkswagen includes useful safety and service-oriented features through its connected-services setup, including automatic crash notification and SOS manual emergency calling. If you buy used, the main long-term ownership risk is more likely to come from condition, maintenance history, and technology quirks than from the car’s basic usefulness.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Arteon?
At 72% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, electronics, and any signs of prior repair quality. Because the Arteon’s appeal depends heavily on its design, comfort, and technology, condition matters a lot when you’re comparing used examples.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base setup includes a stylish cabin, a roomy hatchback body, and standard all-wheel-drive availability, but the higher trims add more convenience and tech. Base-trim buyers should pay close attention to which comfort and infotainment features are missing before deciding whether the lower price is worth it.
- Powertrain: The Arteon uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 268 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic transmission. It is tuned to feel quick and composed, and the available all-wheel-drive system helps with foul-weather traction and grip.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. SEL adds adaptive headlights, while SEL Premium adds automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses an 8-inch touchscreen and supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirror Link through Car-Net App Connect. Navigation is standard with SEL, and SEL Premium adds more advanced parking assistance and a surround-view camera system.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test loop returned 23.9 mpg in combined driving, versus an EPA rating of 23 mpg combined.
Which 2019 Volkswagen Arteon trim should I buy?
The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SEL, and SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Arteon’s core appeal: the stylish body, roomy hatchback practicality, turbocharged power, and standard smartphone integration. It makes the most sense if you want the Arteon’s design and utility at the lowest price.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim because it adds navigation, Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, and adaptive headlights while keeping the Arteon’s strong everyday usability intact. If you want the most balanced mix of features and price, this is the trim to target.
- SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion: This is the top trim, and it layers on the most convenience and premium tech, including the premium sound system, Car-Net subscription services, parking steering assistant, and a surround-view camera system. It suits you best if you want the most fully equipped Arteon and are willing to pay for it.
For safety, note that adaptive headlights are added on SEL, while automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist are reserved for SEL Premium.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Arteon?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 100 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.72% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,117, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon's resale value?
The current average of $18,474 sits slightly below last year's $19,389.
That decline suggests the market has softened, which can be good news if you are buying now but less favorable if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the current trend means you may need to price competitively to stand out, especially if your car has average mileage or visible wear.
On the other hand, the Arteon’s distinctive styling, practical layout, and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it is time to resell. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon safe?
The 2019 Volkswagen Arteon earns a Poor rating from IIHS headlight testing, which keeps it from reaching a Top Safety Pick rating.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen equips every Arteon with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. SEL adds adaptive headlights, while SEL Premium adds automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
The main caveat is the headlight performance, which is the weak spot in an otherwise strong safety package. That means you should pay close attention to trim level if safety tech matters to you, since some of the more advanced driver-assistance features are reserved for higher trims.
Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Arteon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The expert assessment highlights its stylish design, fun-to-drive character, and excellent value for money.
The bottom line: If you want the Arteon’s strongest mix of style, practicality, and value, the 2019 is a compelling place to start. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the market and focus on the cleanest, best-priced example you can find, since condition and history matter a lot in this segment.
