The Volkswagen Arteon is expected to be discontinued by 2024, but in the meantime, the stylish sedan picked up new features and finishes for 2023. It’s VW’s largest car in the United States, but it’s a seriously underrated sub-premium cruiser.
The 2023 Arteon is available in three trims: SE R-Line, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line. All models get a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Power reaches all four wheels through Volkswagen’s fantastic seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
With a slightly detuned version of the Golf R’s powertrain, the Arteon delivers surprising performance. The run from zero to 60 mph takes just 4.6 seconds, and standard adaptive dampers keep the big sedan planted confidently in the corners. Wheel sizes range from 18 to 20 inches, and the car’s standard all-wheel drive (AWD) gives it fantastic grip.
A spacious interior is betrayed slightly by cheapish materials, but Volkswagen incorporated clean design that keeps things visually interesting. The Arteon promises seating for five and actually delivers with good head room and legroom in the second row. Synthetic leather upholstery and heated front seats are standard. Leather is available, along with a massaging driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, and heated rear outboard seats. Cargo space is generous at 27.2 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 56.2 cubic feet with the backs folded flat.
Volkswagen made its digital cockpit system standard, which brings deeply configurable gauge displays. The driver can view maps, audio information, vehicle performance statistics, phone call information, and more in the 10-inch digital gauge cluster. An 8-inch touchscreen is standard and brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The list of other features is long and includes wireless phone charging, tri-zone automatic climate controls, navigation, Bluetooth, SiriusXM radio, HD radio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Buyers can upgrade with a Harman Kardon audio system, additional USB ports, and remote start.
The 2021 Arteon was the last to receive full crash testing from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It earned a Top Safety Pick designation, and while the new model hasn’t been tested, it should perform similarly. Several advanced driver aids come standard, including lane-keep assist, rain-sensing wipers, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, forward-collision warnings, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, and a rearview camera. VW also offers a surround-view camera, a parking-assist system, automatic high beams, and adaptive headlights.
The 2023 Volkswagen Arteon is on sale now. Pricing starts at $44,305 for the base SE R-Line, which includes a $1,295 destination charge. The mid-range SEL R-Line starts at $48,870 including destination, and the top SEL Premium R-Line costs $51,865. Few options are available, and most of those that are offered are accessories. There’s a $190 bike rack, a $120 bumper protection plate, and $428 roof rack cross bars, among others.
5 Overall rating
(2 reviews)Great car it drives beautifully. Looks way better in person than online. Lots of safety features and driving the Arteon is effortless, I highly recommend considering this car as your next vehicle.
Been eyeing up the Arteon since the US model launch. Pre-2022 cars with the Aisin Warner AW8F45 dont live up to VW standards, but my 2023 SE R-Line with DSG has been a very smooth and fun large car. Price was always my issue with new Arteons but my used 2023 SE was well within my budget, gets 37 MPG highway with ease, has almost as much space as a Rav-4, has plenty of power, and has plenty of tech. Before buying I contacted VW corporate and learned that the car has a fully transferrable warranty, fully transferrable VW Care maintenance plan, 4 years of free telematics through the phone app, and can receive OTA software updates. Overall, I think the Arteon represents the best used value for a VW that you can get if you need something bigger than a GTI/Golf R but dont want to look like your dad in a Tiguan.
