The 2023 Volkswagen Arteon is a terrific car parked in the shadow of more popular SUVs.

Fastback styling is popular, and most sedans now have a dramatically rakish rear window. But the Volkswagen Arteon is different. It also has a huge rear hatch that opens wide to reveal a roomy trunk. In addition, the folding rear seats flatten to provide more cargo space. It’s not as much as you’ll find in an SUV, but the utility in an Arteon is superior to a sedan with a fixed rear window.
In the classic German tradition, the Arteon’s styling is clean, the proportions balanced. It is not trying to grab attention like a modern BMW, and it won’t put you to sleep like newer Mercedes-Benzes. Subtle creases and carvings add visual interest, and the test car’s bold 20-inch wheel design ties the grille bars, fender emblems, and rocker panel trim together. Around the back, the Arteon displays a tidy yet expressive look.
For the 2023 model year, the Arteon comes in SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trim levels, each one with an R-Line designation reflecting a sportier appearance. Prices range from $43,010 to $50,175, not including the destination charge of $1,295. Our test car arrived in SEL Premium trim wearing extra-cost Kings Red metallic paint over a Mistral Gray and Raven leather interior. However, Volkswagen issued a credit for missing items including ventilated and massaging front seats and heated rear seats (due to the microchip shortage). So, our test car cost $51,370, including the destination charge.
Open the driver’s side door, and if not for the VW emblem on the steering wheel, you might mistake the Arteon for an Audi. The theme is cold, technical luxury, with plenty of carbon-pattern trim, metallic accents, and a no-nonsense control layout.
It strays only with regard to touch-sensing steering wheel and climate controls rendered in highly reflective gloss-black plastic. They’re sometimes hard to see and use, and are always distracting. For example, on multiple occasions we mistakenly activated the heated steering wheel during a Southern California summer heat wave, and you must look so far away from the road to operate the climate system that we strongly encourage you to set a temperature and leave the panel alone until you need the defog/defrost functions.

Volkswagen equips the Arteon with a rousing turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making an impressive 300 horsepower at 5,350 rpm and 295 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. Going by the code name EA888, it is the same turbo engine you’ll find in the racy Golf R model.
The Golf R also donates the Arteon’s seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with Sport and manual modes. In addition, the Arteon SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line have a standard 4Motion all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, while the SE R-Line comes only with front-wheel drive (FWD). But thanks to a standard XDS cross-differential lock system, the SE R-Line gets the power down without too much trouble.
Drivers can alter the behavior of the variable-ratio steering, adaptive damping suspension, and powertrain by choosing a specific driving mode. They include Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Custom. Our SEL Premium R-Line had 20-inch wheels wrapped in 245/35 all-season tires, and Volkswagen fortifies the Arteon with robust 13.4-inch front and 12.2-inch rear ventilated disc brakes.
With the exception of laggardly powertrain response in some situations, Normal mode provided a good blend of acceleration, ride compliance, and handling capability. Switching to Sport mode resolved the sleepy transmission issue while firming up the steering and suspension. It was perfect for driving on mountain roads.
Custom suited us best, though, allowing us to use the Normal steering effort level combined with Sport suspension and powertrain settings. However, it also contributed to an unimpressive observed fuel economy of 21 mpg on the evaluation route, well short of the EPA’s official fuel economy rating of 25 mpg.
One of the best things about driving a Volkswagen Arteon is the expansive view forward and to the sides of the car. Thin windshield pillars, a low and flat hood, and door-mounted side mirrors ensure a clear 180-degree forward view, which makes it easier to drive the car with confidence. In addition, the test car’s surround-view camera was helpful when reversing and parking.
Acceleration is quick, and the composed ride offers a good feel for the road. In Normal mode, the car feels a little soft, but in Sport mode, the adaptive suspension firms up and allows little in the way of unwanted body motion.
The Continental Pro Contact tires are excellent, quiet on the road yet offering impressive grip in corners and curves. They’re adept at conveying approaching limits of adhesion, too, without squealing loudly about it. In addition, regardless of the driving situation, the brakes feel terrific under foot and proved impervious to hard, repeated use while descending a mountain at a rapid clip.
Overall, the Arteon drives like the good German car that it is, feeling solid and secure at speed, demonstrating predictable ride and handling traits, and proving trustworthy at all times. It’s a shame so many people choose a comparatively clunky SUV instead, just in case they might need to go off-roading at some point.

You won’t have much trouble getting comfortable in a Volkswagen Arteon, though we’ll admit that we missed the massaging and ventilated front seats that would normally be standard equipment on our SEL Premium R-Line test car. Nevertheless, the front seats offer numerous power adjustments, and both the cushions and the steering wheel were heated. The center armrest slides forward and back and adjusts for height, helping to ensure a good position for piling on the miles.
More impressive, the back seat offers full-size sedan accommodations accompanied by a third climate zone with its own control panel. Volkswagen mounts the seat cushion high off the floor, which might restrict headroom for taller people, but the seat is quite comfortable and legroom is generous.
Getting into and out of a VW Arteon is relatively effortless, and the test vehicle had ambient interior lighting and an oversized glass sunroof. The trim on the dashboard looks great, but we found that it reflects a significant amount of summer sunlight, enough to obscure visibility in the side mirrors and to blind the driver with glare. It is a misstep on Volkswagen’s part.
Storage space is in plentiful supply, and most of the Arteon’s trays, bins, cubbies, and compartments have a lining of some kind to quell noise and vibration. If you need to carry passengers and long items like skis, don’t fret, because there is a pass-through from the trunk to the cabin designed for this purpose.
The Arteon has a hands-free power hatch, and it rises high to provide access to the 27.2 cubic-foot trunk. That’s larger by more than 10 cubic feet than a Honda Accord, though you must remove the cargo cover and pack flush to the rear window to make full use of it. Maximum cargo capacity with the 60/40-split folding back seats down measures 56.2 cubic feet.

Volkswagen equips the Arteon with a 10.25-inch digital instrumentation panel and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Neither display impresses with its size or graphics, but both offer plenty of features and functionality.
For example, the infotainment system equips the car with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, Car-Net connected services with a generous trial subscription to two of the three plans, and a navigation system. Our test car also had wireless smartphone charging and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.
The infotainment system looks simple and straightforward, but there are quirks to the user interface that can cause frustration. For example, the proximity-sensing screen pulls up a secondary radio menu as you reach your hand toward it, and to tune to a different radio station you must first select a sub-menu. The driving assistance system screen launches a graphic depicting the car and its features, but to change settings you must choose a sub-menu. The UI forces multi-step processes, adding unwanted complexity.
In addition, the standard voice-recognition capabilities do not meet expectations. If you want a functional system, you must upgrade to a Navigation Plus subscription that keeps the native system’s maps up to date, and then tack on a Speech Plus subscription so that you can say something like “find the nearest Starbucks” and get a coherent response. Or, you can simply run Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and bypass this extra-cost nonsense altogether.
Volkswagen includes complimentary five-year subscriptions to the Remote and Safe & Secure Car-Net connected service plans, which is generous. These allow you to remotely start the Arteon, find it if you’ve forgotten where you parked it, get help if there is an emergency, and benefit from an automatic crash notification system. Family Guardian features add peace of mind when younger drivers are in possession of the car, allowing the Arteon’s owner to set speed, curfew, and geographic boundary alerts.
Lastly, it’s worth noting that the Arteon’s Harman Kardon premium audio system delivers satisfying sound quality.

Volkswagen equips every 2023 Arteon with IQ.Drive, a collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). The package includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking (Front Assist), lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist (Lane Assist), a blind-spot monitoring system that uses Lane Assist to discourage an unsafe lane change, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist (Travel Assist.)
In addition, the Arteon has Emergency Assist. This feature can detect an unresponsive driver who has fallen asleep or suffered a medical emergency, and can bring the car to a safe stop with the hazard lights flashing. We’re fans of this technology, but in the Arteon, it can activate even when the driver is paying attention and holding the steering wheel.
While driving on Los Angeles freeways and using Travel Assist, we held the steering wheel low on either side of the bottom spoke. Unfortunately, it appears that when you do so, the system can’t sense your hands on the steering wheel. In addition, since a camera isn’t monitoring the driver, it cannot tell if they are still alert and paying attention. So, on several occasions, Emergency Assist activated when it wasn’t necessary.
Travel Assist worked better on freeways than it did on the winding Pacific Coast Highway between Malibu and Point Mugu. It struggled with the sharper curves and sections where lanes widened and narrowed. Also, in general, the Lane Assist systems inaccurately identified lane departures when driving over significant seams in the pavement or scars from past construction projects, vibrating the steering wheel as a warning and adding corrective steering when it wasn’t necessary.
As far as Volkswagen Arteon crash-test ratings go, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not evaluated the car. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has, and gives it the highest rating of Top Safety Pick+.

The 2023 Volkswagen Arteon has a single direct rival, and it is going out of production. The Kia Stinger is in its final year, so if you want one, don’t waste any time.
Otherwise, the Arteon’s upscale design and interior, full-size cabin, and practical sportback body style put it in a class of its own. Sure, you could get an Audi A5 Sportback or a BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, each equipped with a hatchback and folding back seats. But you’ll spend more to get less passenger and cargo space.
Alternatively, you could go with a Honda Accord and save lots of money. It’s just as big inside and, in fully-loaded Touring trim, costs less than a base VW Arteon. Plus, it has a far more fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain. But the fixed rear window limits utility, and the Accord doesn’t offer all-wheel drive or thrilling acceleration.
Then there is a new 2023 Toyota Crown, a traditional sedan trying to be an SUV. And speaking of SUVs, any model with a coupe-style roofline could be a rival to the Arteon, including electrics like the Tesla Model Y.
Still, we’re fans of the 2023 Volkswagen Arteon. Its lack of popularity guarantees exclusivity, and for anyone who loves the journey as much as the destination, it is an excellent alternative to a typical crossover SUV as long as you have no plans to travel off the pavement.
