The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon is a rare and distinctive automobile that deserves far more attention and consideration than it gets.

From the front wheels back, the Volkswagen Arteon’s design and proportions are clean, balanced, and attractive. The car’s front styling is where designers exercised their creativity, adding a chrome-trimmed grille and a pair of headlights that blend to create a head-turning look unlike anything else in VW’s lineup.
The Arteon’s roofline suggests that it has a hatchback design, but since most modern sedans sport a similar silhouette, you can never be sure. However, in this case, your suspicions are accurate. The Arteon boasts a large rear liftgate, like an Audi A5 or Q5, BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe or X4, Infiniti QX55, Kia Stinger, or Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.
We know. We mixed and matched cars with SUVs and named several luxury models. That’s because the Volkswagen Arteon possesses all of the requisite characteristics of these vehicles. This is a big car, supplying plenty of passenger and cargo space. Plus, though it doesn’t offer extra ground clearance, most of the Arteons that VW will sell in America will have standard 4Motion all-wheel drive (AWD).
Furthermore, in its top specification, the Arteon can match the compact luxury models for perceived quality, if not outright brand cachet. The interior features a traditionally subdued Germanic approach to design, materials, and surfaces, with just enough brightwork and contrast to keep the cabin from looking dull and uninspired. Three interior colors are available, Titan Black, Titan Black and Moonrock (leatherette only), and Stone and Raven (premium Nappa leather only). An available panoramic sunroof lets more natural light into the car.
The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon model lineup includes the SE R-Line, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line. At VW, the R-Line designation applies to models with a sportier look, and for 2022, all three Arteon trim levels get it as standard equipment. The SE R-Line comes only with front-wheel drive (FWD), while the SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line have standard 4Motion AWD. Prices range from $41,945 to $50,745, including the $1,195 destination charge.
Our test car had SEL R-Line trim and came in a new-for-2022 Moonstone Gray paint color. It also had a Black Wheel Package featuring attractive turbine-blade 20-inch wheels in a Dark Graphite finish. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) came to $47,340, including the destination charge.

For 2022, Volkswagen transformed the Arteon’s performance and driving character thanks to a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Shared with the redesigned Golf R hot hatchback, the EA888 turbo engine delivers 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque in the Arteon, increases of 32 hp and 37 lb-ft of torque compared to last year. That might not sound like much, but it’s precisely what the Arteon needed.
Additionally, VW replaced the previous eight-speed automatic with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT). For driving enthusiasts, this is good news. However, for people who don’t understand what a DCT is or how it works, the 2022 Arteon’s transmission behavior might prove dissatisfying. Generally speaking, a DCT offers snappier shifts and better fuel economy but can also produce a delayed response and uneven power delivery.
We like DCTs well enough, and we’re willing to accept their occasional driveability quirks for their more engaging nature. But then, we like to drive, and the 2022 Arteon is more than happy to oblige.
Four driving modes are available: Eco, Comfort, Normal, and Sport. When you select Sport and set off down a road you know well, the Arteon impresses an enthusiastic driver with quick acceleration, plenty of passing power, a connected and controlled ride, precise steering, trustworthy handling, and faithful brakes. It is a capable and entertaining sports sedan.
When you’re not seeking thrills, the Arteon proves its worth as a highway hauler and a city dweller. The shapely Arteon is quiet and isolating at speed on the freeway, making it a good match for its large and comfortable seats. The adaptive damping suspension provides a taut but agreeable ride in the city, while the Cross Differential System (XDS) and 4Motion AWD help drivers make maximum use of the turbocharged engine’s broad torque band. As a result, you won’t have trouble getting into traffic or getting up to speed in this car.
An Auto Hold system is standard, and we recommend using it. This feature engages the electronic parking brake when the Arteon comes to a stop and disengages it when you press on the accelerator. In addition to holding the car in place in halted traffic or while waiting at an intersection, it prevents the Arteon from rolling on hills after releasing the brake pedal, which can happen because the car has a DCT.
Official EPA fuel economy ratings suggest that a 2022 Arteon 4Motion will get 25 mpg in combined driving. On the testing loop, driven in Normal and Sport driving modes, the test vehicle averaged 24.5 mpg.

With the 2022 Arteon, Volkswagen successfully marries equal parts of form and function. This is a more difficult trick to pull off than you might expect, but the Arteon’s size and sportback body style make it easier.
Four people will be remarkably comfortable in this car, and a fifth person fits into the middle rear-seat position with less effort than in most sedans and many SUVs. There is plenty of interior room, and the seats are exceptionally supportive. Better yet, a massage function is standard for the driver’s seat when you choose SEL Premium R-Line trim.
Volkswagen equips the Arteon with standard heated front seats and a three-zone automatic climate control system with touch-sensing controls. Knobs would be preferable for reduced distraction because you need to look down and away from the road to use the touch panel. With SEL Premium R-Line trim, rear passengers get their own climate controls. This top-of-the-line trim also comes with ventilated front and heated rear seats.
Because the Arteon’s rear seats offer so much room and would be a natural fit for parents with babies in reverse-facing child safety seats (not to mention toddlers in forward-facing seats), it’s a shame VW doesn’t offer rear side-window sunshades for this car.
That’s especially true considering how much trunk room the Arteon supplies. You get 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat, which is double what you’ll find in a typical compact sedan. As a result, the Arteon has plenty of room for baby strollers, diaper bags, golf clubs, or luggage for a week-long family road trip. And when you’re trying to check things off the weekend do-it-yourself list, you can fold the Arteon’s back seat to create 56.2 cubic feet of cargo space.
And you thought you needed an SUV instead of a car.

In 2021, Volkswagen updated and upgraded the Arteon’s instrumentation and infotainment systems. The car includes Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro with a 10-inch display, configurable data panels, and several viewing themes, including one that runs the navigation map in a full-screen mode.
Though it retains a somewhat small 8-inch touchscreen display, the Arteon’s infotainment system is well equipped. It includes App-Connect for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Car-Net connected services with three different plans, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, and a navigation system.
Overall, the Arteon’s infotainment system is easy to use. However, unless you pay for the Car-Net Hotspot WiFi plan and then add Speech Plus service, the system doesn’t offer natural voice recognition, which can cause some frustration if you’re expecting it to work like Siri or Google Assistant. Also, the system hides many sub-menus until you bring your hand closer to the proximity-sensing touchscreen, which is sometimes irritating. And if you want to tune the radio using the provided knob, you need to make sure you’re on the right screen and sub-menu, or it won’t work, another occasional source of aggravation.
What’s the solution? Run Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and stream your favorite playlists through the standard eight-speaker stereo system. If you want the Arteon’s optional Harman Kardon premium audio components, you’ll need to buy the SEL Premium R-Line. It includes 12 speakers, and you can choose Pure, Chill, Live, and Energy sound settings.
Volkswagen also offers a Parking Steering Assistant for the Arteon SEL Premium R-Line. This park assist technology works with the front and rear parking sensors and can take over steering duties to help a driver slot the car into a parallel or a perpendicular parking space.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2022 Arteon is a Top Safety Pick. However, that designation applies only to the SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line, which have adaptive LED headlights with Light Assist automatic high-beam operation. During testing, these headlights proved downright sensational.
Standard safety features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Upgrading to the SEL R-Line or SEL Premium R-Line adds Lane Assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist.
Lane Assist includes lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist. Travel Assist builds on these features with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centering assist for highways, but you need to keep your hands on the steering wheel.
Emergency Assist activates if you remove your hands for more than a few seconds. It assumes you have either fallen asleep or suffered a medical emergency. After attempting to get your attention through visual, audible, and tactile alerts, it will start to slow and then stop the Arteon with its hazard lights flashing.
To activate Travel Assist, you must first activate the system using one of the two touch-sensing cruise control buttons on the steering wheel. After the system is ready, it will notify you that it’s active with a message in the digital instrumentation display. Then you can set a speed, and the system will maintain safe distances from cars ahead while helping keep the Arteon centered in its lane. During testing, Travel Assist proved effective and subtle about its activity, meaning you’re more likely to continue using it.
Additionally, as part of an active Car-Net subscription, the Arteon provides automatic collision notifications and Family Guardian settings designed to help parents keep tabs on teenage drivers. An automatic post-collision braking system is also standard, bringing the Arteon to a halt as soon as possible following a collision to prevent a secondary crash after the airbags have already deployed.

Every new Volkswagen comes with a Carefree Coverage plan. It is better than what some automakers offer and not as competitive as what you’ll receive from others.
Carefree Coverage pays for your scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 20,000 miles. It provides three years of free roadside assistance and a bumper-to-bumper warranty for four years or 50,000 miles. You’ll also get five years of remote access services through Car-Net, including remote engine starting via the MyVW smartphone app.
As for the Arteon’s price, it reflects significant value if you cross-shop the VW with luxury models such as the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. At the same time, for less than a base Arteon SE R-Line, you could choose a mainstream sedan that’s equally rewarding to drive, such as a Honda Accord 2.0T, Hyundai Sonata N-Line, or Kia K5 GT. The Arteon’s price range overlaps with its most direct competitor, the Kia Stinger. Still, while the Kia is significantly smaller inside, it delivers more value in the form of equipment and performance.
So, where does that leave the VW Arteon when it comes to cost-effectiveness? That’s entirely dependent on how you measure value and what’s most important to you in a new car.
As for us, we’re fans of this rare and distinctive automobile. It deserves far more attention and consideration than it gets.
