Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Tacoma 4.22 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma stands out by being unapologetically a truck, pure and simple. Its raw honesty may seem unappealing at first, but that straightforward character becomes one of its most endearing traits. The truck also has a stylish design and is described as excellent value for money, which helps explain why it has such a strong following.
Living with a Toyota Tacoma is portrayed as making it feel like a member of the family, a faithful companion, and a trusted partner that is ready for just about anything. At the same time, it is not trying to hide its shortcomings: the technology is outdated and the ride quality is poor. Even so, the overall impression is of a vehicle that wins buyers over through character, durability, and a clear sense of purpose.

This vehicle had a terrible engine vibration under load, it was dirty, and dirt everywhere , the tow hitch showed signs of heavy work, and when trying to explain it to the dealer , they more or less couldn’t wait for me to get off there lot.

Love this model, but not this particular unit. It has been hit three times, the back bumper was smashed. I was told it was going to be replaced. The truck was filthy, and the salesman was not honest about the Carfax or the advertised price.

Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.22/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also emphasizes reliability, longevity, and the sense that it is a truck you can count on over time.
The expert review reinforces that dependability angle by describing the Tacoma as legendary for its indestructibility and known to hold its value over time. It also notes free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about reputation and more about condition, since a truck with this kind of use history can vary widely from one listing to the next.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma?
At 64% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing, off-roading, or heavy commuting. Focus on wear items, signs of body repair, and whether the truck’s condition matches its mileage and price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Toyota differentiates the trims with unique grilles, wheels, hoods, and finishes, and the cabin stays intentionally simple with hard, durable plastics, analog gauges, and large knobs and buttons. The lineup includes SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro, and the base setup is the most stripped-back.
- Powertrain: Most Tacomas use a direct-injected, Atkinson-cycle, 3.5-liter V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. V6 models include heavy-duty cooling, trailer wiring harness connections, Trailer Sway Control, and a receiver hitch, and the truck can be equipped with rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Every 2019 Tacoma gets Toyota Safety Sense, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
- Infotainment: The truck uses a 7-inch display, and the system lacks wireless smartphone integration and over-the-air capability in the provided data. The available JBL audio system is a plus, but the interface is dated.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert review says the test truck returned 20 mpg in combined driving according to the EPA, averaged 20.1 mpg over a week, and recorded 18.9 mpg on the test loop.
Which 2019 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the most basic path into the Tacoma lineup, so it makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and can live with the truck’s intentionally simple cabin and older-feeling tech.
- SR5: This is the sensible step up if you want a little more everyday usability without moving too far up the price ladder.
- TRD Sport: This trim adds a more style- and street-oriented personality, making it a good fit if you want a Tacoma that feels a bit less bare-bones.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the better choice if you want the Tacoma’s off-road hardware and capability to be a real part of the ownership experience.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want a more polished Tacoma, since it adds more comfort and still remains capable enough for all but the most hard-core off-roaders.
- TRD Pro: Choose this if you want the most off-road-focused version in the lineup and are willing to pay for it.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma?
The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,390 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.48% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,440, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $29,576 sits slightly below last year's $30,328.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also suggests the truck has already absorbed some near-term depreciation. If you plan to sell later, the Tacoma’s strong reputation for reliability and value retention should help support demand.
Because shoppers continue to associate this model year with durability and long-term usefulness, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than many rivals. Condition, mileage, and accident history will matter a lot when you eventually list it.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.22/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The Tacoma earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
Crash testing is mixed in the details: the IIHS rates headlight performance and LATCH anchor access as Marginal, and Double Cab versions get an Acceptable rating rather than Good for small overlap, frontal-impact, front passenger protection. The NHTSA gives the Double Cab a four-star overall rating for crash protection.
That means the Tacoma brings a solid standard safety suite, but you should still pay close attention to cab style and test results when comparing listings.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.48% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.22/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 stands out for its unapologetically truck-like character, strong value, and durable appeal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $31,024, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $29,576 average.
- It adds important design and technology updates that make the truck feel more modern.
The bottom line: If you want the better value and are comfortable with older tech, the 2019 is the smarter buy. If you want a slightly more modern Tacoma and can stretch your budget, the 2020 is the better path. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2019 remains the more compelling starting point.
