Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — the 2019 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.22/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Drivers commonly praise its reliability, longevity, and resale value, and many also like its solid performance and features. The overview points to a truck with a loyal following, strong value for money, and a distinctive personality that works well if you want something unapologetically truck-like. The main trade-offs are outdated technology and poor ride quality, so it fits you best if you value character and durability more than refinement. With 35.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.

Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

Owners rate it 4.22/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback emphasizes reliability, longevity, and a truck that many owners feel they can count on over time. The expert notes also describe it as legendary for its indestructibility and say it is known to hold its value over time. Toyota’s free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles adds a useful ownership perk. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a truck with this kind of reputation can still hide wear if it has been worked hard.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma?

At 63.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing, off-roading, or heavy commuting. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of wear in the suspension, brakes, and cabin controls. Because the Tacoma’s reputation can keep demand high, you want to be sure the specific truck you choose has been cared for properly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Tacoma lineup spans SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro. The base trims lean into the truck’s rugged, functional character, while higher trims add more distinctive styling and equipment. If you want the best value, the midrange trims are the ones to compare most closely.
• Powertrain: Most Tacomas use a 3.5-liter V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive are both offered, and the V6 setup includes towing hardware such as heavy-duty cooling, trailer wiring, Trailer Sway Control, and a receiver hitch.
• Safety package: Every Tacoma gets Toyota Safety Sense, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.
• Infotainment: The Tacoma uses a 7-inch display, and the system lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for this model year. The available JBL audio system adds a better sound experience, but the interface itself is dated.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert test drive notes say the V6 truck returned 20 mpg in combined driving according to the EPA, with 18.9 mpg on the test loop and 20.1 mpg over the full week.

Which 2019 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the entry point if you want the Tacoma’s core truck character at the lowest price. It gives you the basic rugged design and functional cabin approach, but you should expect the fewest comfort and convenience extras.
• SR5: This is the trim to focus on if you want the best balance of price and everyday usability. It adds more equipment without pushing you into the pricier specialty trims, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and a step up in personality without going all the way to the off-road-focused models. It suits you if style matters and you still want a broadly usable daily driver.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the right pick if you want the Tacoma’s more serious trail-oriented hardware. It is the trim to consider if off-pavement use matters more than on-road polish.
• Limited: This trim leans into comfort and upscale presentation, and the test truck’s Limited setup came as a Double Cab, short bed, V6, 4WD model. It suits you if you want the most refined-feeling Tacoma without jumping to the top specialty trim.
• TRD Pro: This is the most specialized version and the one to choose if you want the most capability-focused Tacoma in the lineup.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available for most versions.

Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 63.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.44% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.22/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 stands out for its raw, truck-first character and strong value for money.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $30,565, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $29,085 average.
• It adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and an 8-inch screen.

The bottom line: If you want the lower-priced Tacoma with strong market availability and you do not mind its older tech, the 2019 is the better value play. If you are willing to pay more for a modest tech upgrade and a slightly more modern feel, the 2020 is the cleaner choice.
