CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
overall

Summary
With 898 currently listed for sale and an average price of $25,219.00, 35.1% of 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrids for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 4.38 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
72.5% of 2019 RAV4 Hybrid models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid stands out as a compact SUV that blends efficiency with a more rugged look than before. In CarGurus’ test-drive notes, the newest 2019 RAV4 Hybrid is described as looking tougher and more rugged, and the hybrid version is called the sportiest and most cost-effective way to drive a RAV4. That combination gives it a clear identity: it is aimed at buyers who want the practicality of a small SUV without giving up fuel efficiency or style.
It also earns praise for being an excellent value for money, stylish, and fuel-efficient. Those strengths help explain why it can appeal to shoppers who want a sensible daily driver that still feels appealing rather than purely utilitarian. The main drawback noted is outdated technology, and owner feedback echoes that concern by pointing to tech features that feel a bit behind the times. Even so, the overall impression is of a well-liked hybrid SUV that delivers strong efficiency, good comfort, and a compelling price-to-value balance.

I have only had the 2019 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid for a few days. So far I can say I enjoy driving it. The space inside is good for me and my daughter. The seats are comfortable. The ride is smooth. There is good acceleration when getting on the highway. The brakes work well.

I bought this car and I love it. I was in a small Kia Niro 2020 hybrid before and though my gas mileage was better I did not feel as safe as I do in the Toyota Rav4 hybrid. When I accelerate it actually accelerates and I live in a climate with ice and snow in the winter so the all wheel drive is something I feel better about having.

Owners repeatedly praise the fuel economy, comfort, and performance, while also calling out the interior as a pleasant place to spend time. The overview also frames this hybrid as a practical compact SUV with a tougher look and a strong value-to-efficiency balance, which fits shoppers who want everyday usefulness without giving up style.
The main trade-offs are the outdated technology and some interior disappointment for the price. Even so, the market still looks healthy, with 32.1% of listings classified as good or great deals.
Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise for fuel economy, performance, and comfort that tends to matter over the long haul. The expert notes also emphasize that the hybrid battery setup has proven reliable over many years of Toyota hybrid use, and ToyotaCare includes the first two service visits plus roadside assistance.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the hybrid system itself and more about finding a well-kept example with the right maintenance history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
At 72.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the tech and safety features operate as expected. Because the model’s appeal depends heavily on value and efficiency, a clean, well-maintained example matters more than chasing the lowest sticker price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The XSE stands out with glossy black exterior trim, 18-inch wheels, blue stitching, and sport-tuned dampers and springs, while the cabin across the lineup uses padded surfaces, large controls, and a more upscale feel than the old RAV4. The base trim is the one most likely to leave you wanting more if you care about appearance and cabin polish.
- Powertrain: The hybrid system pairs a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with two electric motors and a battery for 219 horsepower. It is described as quiet, seamless, and efficient, though the standard AWD can be slow to react to wheelspin and the braking feel is a weak point.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense comes standard and includes forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, traffic-sign recognition, and auto high beams. Rear emergency braking is optional.
- Infotainment: The system uses a touchscreen with swipe and pinch support, Apple CarPlay is standard, and Android Auto is not. The maps look dated, and Toyota’s app setup depends on plugging in a smartphone.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 41 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 40 mpg combined, and the expert test drive returned 36 mpg over 400 mostly highway miles.
Which 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the hybrid efficiency and standard safety equipment at the lowest cost, but it is the trim most likely to feel basic next to the others.
- XLE: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it sits in the middle of the range and gives you a more balanced mix of equipment and price.
- XSE: This is the standout if you care about style and driving feel. It adds the sportier look, sport-tuned suspension, and the most distinctive personality in the lineup, and it is the trim CarGurus recommends when paired with the Cold Weather package.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the most upscale version and are willing to pay more for the top-end experience.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 921 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.16% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,315.68, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $25,246 sits slightly below last year's $25,543.
That mild decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, the current pricing trend is not a warning sign so much as a reminder that resale will depend on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. A clean example with strong equipment and a good history should still hold appeal because shoppers continue to value the model’s efficiency and practicality.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid safe?
The 2019 RAV4 Hybrid earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. The IIHS rated the RAV4, not the Hybrid, Good in all six crash tests, but low headlight scores kept it from earning a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, and it includes forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, traffic-sign recognition, and auto high beams. A passenger-seat cushion airbag and a driver’s knee airbag are also standard. Rear emergency braking is optional.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.16% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 brings a tougher look and the sportiest, most cost-effective hybrid RAV4 setup.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $27,187, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $25,246 average.
- It adds a roomier cabin with broader standard multimedia and safety equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the smarter target because pricing has eased and the hybrid package is already strong. If you can spend more for a newer model and want the extra standard equipment, the 2020 is the cleaner upgrade; otherwise, shop the 2019 carefully and prioritize condition over trim prestige.
