Why it stands out
The 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out in the compact-car class by feeling upscale, refined, and genuinely athletic. Mazda’s driving-focused character has long been part of the model’s identity, and this fourth-generation version is presented as the brand’s strongest expression of that approach. It also brings standard advanced safety features, which adds to its appeal for buyers looking for a small car that feels more polished than basic transportation.
At the same time, the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 is not the most practical choice in its segment. Its technology can be unintuitive, and the back seat is described as cramped. Even so, the overall package is compelling because it combines a fun-to-drive personality with a more premium feel than many compact cars, making it a strong option for shoppers who value driving enjoyment and refinement over maximum space or convenience.

I own the base model with 2.5 motor and its an amazing car all around!! Even at base trim level it is very well equipped and its performance speaks for itself. Wish I bought the manual transmission because these things love to be at high revs.

Yes — the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its comfortable driving experience, smooth ride, and upscale interior features. They also highlight the performance and handling, which lines up with the car’s driving-focused personality.
The main trade-offs are its unintuitive technology and cramped back seat. That matters most if you want a compact car that leans more toward everyday practicality than style and driver engagement.
For you, that means the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 makes the most sense if you want a small car that feels more refined and rewarding than basic transportation. It also fits shoppers who care more about driving enjoyment and a premium feel than maximum space.
With 33.4% of listings priced as good or great deals, there’s still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels comfortable, smooth, and dependable enough to inspire confidence over time. That kind of praise matters when you’re looking for a used compact car you can count on.
The expert evaluation also reinforces that impression by describing the car as composed in typical driving conditions and rewarding to drive without feeling harsh. It also notes strong efficiency across the lineup, which can help make ownership feel more predictable.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s technology and equipment still suit your needs after years of use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Mazda MAZDA3?
At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, alignment, and interior condition. Because the car’s appeal depends so much on refinement, you’ll want to focus on signs of wear that could undermine the upscale feel.
Pay extra attention to how the technology works in real use, since the system can be unintuitive. It’s also worth checking rear-seat space and overall cabin condition so you know whether the car still fits your daily needs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base sedan is lighter on content than the base hatchback, while the hatchback adds 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, automatic high beams, dual-zone automatic climate control, a drowsiness alert, synthetic leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped shift knob. The Preferred trims add an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, power-adjustable side mirrors, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system. The Premium trims add leather seats, a power moonroof, a head-up display, adaptive headlights, and the manual transmission.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 186 horsepower, paired with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The lineup also notes a future SkyActiv-X engine, but the current model’s core setup is the SkyActiv-G.
- Safety package: Mazda’s i-Activsense suite includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and driver-attention alerts. It comes standard on the base hatchback, but not on the base sedan, where you need to move up to the Select Sedan trim for many of those features.
- Infotainment: The car uses an 8.8-inch MazdaConnect screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system is remote-controlled rather than touch-operated, so you should test it yourself before buying.
- Fuel efficiency: The lineup returns 27 mpg city, 36 highway, 30 combined in the most efficient front-wheel-drive automatic sedan, while the least efficient version returns 24/32/27. Other versions include 25/33/28, 25/35/29, and 26/35/30, depending on body style, drivetrain, and transmission.
Which 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 5 trim levels: base Sedan, Select Sedan, Preferred Sedan, Premium Sedan, and base Hatchback.
Here's the short version:
- base Sedan: This is the entry point, but it gives up some of the standard content that makes the hatchback more appealing. It works best if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable with a simpler setup.
- base Hatchback: This is the best-value trim. It adds 18-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, automatic high beams, dual-zone automatic climate control, a drowsiness alert, synthetic leather upholstery, and more safety equipment, making it the smartest pick for most shoppers.
- Select Sedan: This trim closes much of the gap between the base sedan and the better-equipped hatchback, so it makes sense if you want a sedan but don’t want to stay at the bare minimum.
- Preferred Sedan: This is the right step up if you want more comfort and convenience, especially the power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and Bose audio.
- Premium Sedan: Choose this if you want the most upscale feel, including leather seats, a power moonroof, a head-up display, adaptive headlights, and the manual transmission.
The safety suite is standard on the base hatchback, but many of its features require the Select Sedan or higher on the sedan side.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Mazda MAZDA3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 580 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.20% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,920, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $16,915 sits slightly below last year's $17,120.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the range, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell.
The market also shows enough demand to keep the car relevant with used shoppers, especially because it combines style, safety, and a premium feel. That helps support resale value better than a more ordinary compact car might.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
The 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The base hatchback comes standard with Mazda’s i-Activsense suite, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and driver-attention alerts. Those features are not standard on the base sedan, so trim choice matters if safety equipment is a priority.
One caveat is that the hatchback’s large C-pillars create big blind spots, and the parking-brake behavior is described as unintuitive. That doesn’t erase the safety equipment, but it does mean you should pay attention to visibility and day-to-day usability during a test drive.
Should I buy a 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.20% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings standard advanced safety features and a more premium, driver-focused feel than many compact cars.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $17,430, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $16,915 average.
- It adds a sharper premium feel and easier-to-use technology.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger value play, the 2019 is the better starting point because it already delivers the upscale design, safety, and driving enjoyment that define this generation. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year, the 2020 is the secondary path for buyers who want the same basic formula with a slightly more polished presentation.
