The spacious trunk and useful driving assist features also come up often, which fits a car aimed at daily errands and longer trips. In use, it’s strongest as a value-focused compact sedan rather than a driver’s car, and the available turbocharged Sport trim is the version that most changes the experience.

The expert review also describes it as a very nice car that exudes quality and value, even if it isn’t especially exciting to drive. Hyundai’s warranty coverage and ownership perks add another layer of confidence for used buyers.

For long-term ownership, the main risk is less about major excitement and more about making sure the specific used example has been cared for well.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?

At 56.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually strong. Focus on condition, prior damage, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim level you expect. Because this model’s appeal is tied so heavily to value and features, a clean, well-kept example matters more than chasing the lowest sticker price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SE is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more comfort, convenience, and technology. The Limited stands out for its richer equipment list, and the available turbocharged Sport trim is the one that most changes the overall experience.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic transmission. It’s tuned for acceptable acceleration and everyday efficiency rather than excitement.
• Safety package: Starting with the SEL trim, you get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. The Limited adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit system features.
• Infotainment: Versions above the base SE include a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio. The Limited can add an 8-inch display, navigation, and premium audio, along with Blue Link services on Value Edition and Limited trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the Elantra returns 32 mpg in combined driving, and the testing loop returned 29.3 mpg.

Which 2019 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Elantra nameplate and can live without the extra tech and convenience features found higher up.
• SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the core driver-assistance features and the 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
• Value Edition: This trim is worth a look if you want more convenience and connected-services value, including Blue Link access.
• Eco: Choose this if your priority is efficiency-focused ownership and you want a trim that leans toward economy-minded use.
• Limited: This is the most feature-rich choice, with the premium audio system, larger available screen, navigation, and the most complete safety and convenience package.

For safety, the strongest standard driver-assistance coverage starts with the SEL, while the Limited adds the most advanced features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,342 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.12% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,415, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $11,487 sits slightly below last year's $12,368.

That decline suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you’re planning to resell later, the current trend points to a model that has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help limit further downside from here. Well-equipped examples and clean-condition cars should hold up better than rougher ones because shoppers in this segment are value-sensitive.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2019 Elantra gets top marks across the board from IIHS, except for an Acceptable rating for the accessibility of its LATCH child-seat anchors. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives it a four-star overall rating, with four-star frontal-impact results and a four-star side-impact protection rating for rear-seat occupants.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Most versions include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. You need to move up to the Limited trim for adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit system features.

The main caveat is that the NHTSA result is solid rather than class-leading, so you should pay close attention to trim level and equipment if safety tech matters most to you.

Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.12% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The available turbocharged Sport trim is the version that changes the overall experience most favorably.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $13,507, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $11,487 average.
• It adds free scheduled maintenance and improved fuel economy ratings.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the stronger buy because it’s cheaper and still well liked by owners. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer outgoing-year model with added perks, the 2020 is the better secondary path.

How does the 2019 Hyundai Elantra compare to the 2019 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2019 Hyundai Elantra 8.2/10 and the 2019 Honda Civic 7.8/10.

The Elantra is the better value play, with a much lower average used price and a stronger deal share for shoppers. The Civic brings more horsepower and a slightly higher starting MSRP, but the Elantra counters with better expert scores for cost effectiveness and technology. If you want the cheaper car with strong feature content, the Elantra makes the stronger case; if you want more power and don’t mind paying more, the Civic is the alternative.
