Why it stands out
Freshened up for 2019, the 2019 Hyundai Elantra remains an incredible value, but its updates do not address the car’s ho-hum driving dynamics. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a lot for the money, even if the driving experience is not the car’s strongest trait.
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is also described as updated and upgraded, but the summary suggests that satisfaction depends heavily on choosing the turbocharged Sport trim. Owner feedback reinforces the Elantra’s practical appeal, with praise for its smooth acceleration, comfortable interior, spacious trunk, and driving assist features. At the same time, some drivers note that the cabin ceiling feels low and that the car can be a bit loud on the road.

I think the features on this car is amazing and it is a great value. It is a good size, economical, just enough power and just enough weight to be stable and a fun little car to drive around the area when running errands or the quarterly work meeting, or just to the dog park and hanging with friends. It's nice looking, and a bit loud on the road sometimes but nothing a little sound barrier lining can't fix... or shocks.

This car was a good value. It has good acceleration and a quiet interior. Personally, I like the styling of this model better than the current model year.

Economic and decent car. Convenient to drive around the city

The features are impeccable. I love that it has three different types of “drive”, I love all of the assist features, and the trunk is really big for a Saran plus the back seats can come down! I got the best deal I could find on this car and I got it in the color I wanted. I love it. The only thing I dislike is how low the ceiling is. The seat can lower but it still feels a little strange.

Yes — the 2019 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its impressive features, smooth acceleration, comfortable interior, spacious trunk, and driving assist features. That lines up well with the overview: you get a value-focused compact sedan that works especially well for daily errands and longer trips, even if the driving experience is not its strongest trait.
With 23.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop carefully for the right example.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in everyday use, with praise for its smooth acceleration, comfortable interior, and practical feature set. The expert evaluation also emphasizes value, quality, and ownership perks, which supports the idea that this is a car you can count on for routine commuting and longer drives.
Hyundai’s long warranty coverage adds another layer of reassurance for used buyers, but you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows uneven wear. Focus on body condition, interior wear, and how the car drives on the road, since owner feedback mentions a low cabin ceiling and some road noise.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more convenience and safety equipment. The Limited stands out for its upgraded interior and added features, but the base trim leaves out some of the tech and driver-assistance content you may want.
- Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic transmission. It is tuned for acceptable acceleration rather than excitement, and the driving modes do not transform it into a sporty car.
- Safety package: Starting with the SEL trim, you get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. The Limited adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit system.
- Infotainment: Any version other than the base SE comes with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio with a free 3-month trial. The Limited can be upgraded to an 8-inch display with navigation, and it also gets an Infinity premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The Elantra returns 32 mpg in combined driving, and the test loop returned 29.3 mpg before the trip computer showed 32.4 mpg after a week.
Which 2019 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the simplest choice, and it makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra convenience and safety content found higher up the range.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds important driver-assistance equipment while staying below the more expensive luxury-oriented versions.
- Value Edition: This trim is aimed at shoppers who want more comfort and connected-services content without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
- Eco: Choose this if your priority is efficiency-focused commuting and you want a trim positioned around economy-minded ownership.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich choice, with the strongest mix of comfort, infotainment, and safety upgrades, especially if you want the available Ultimate Package.
The safety package starts with important driver-assistance features on the SEL, while the Limited adds the most advanced equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Elantra?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 23.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,068 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,414.03, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $11,704 sits slightly below last year's $12,491.
That price movement suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you shop carefully now, you may have less downside left than a buyer who paid closer to last year’s average.
The market still shows meaningful demand, especially for well-equipped examples with strong condition and clean history. That can help support resale value when it is time for you to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The 2019 Elantra gets top marks across the board from IIHS, except for an Acceptable rating for the accessibility of its LATCH child-seat anchors. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives it a four-star overall rating, thanks to four-star frontal-impact results and a four-star side-impact protection rating for rear-seat occupants.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety equipment is strong for the class. Starting with the SEL trim, you get forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot-monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-monitoring system. The Limited adds adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection enhancement, automatic high-beam headlights, and Safe Exit system.
The main caveat is that some of the most desirable safety features are reserved for higher trims, so you should verify exactly which driver-assistance systems are on the car you are considering.
Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 23.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 refresh adds updated styling and upgraded interior touches, but the turbocharged Sport trim is the standout for driving enjoyment.
Consider the 2020 if:
- It adds free scheduled maintenance, improved fuel economy, and new standard safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play right now, the 2019 is the stronger shopping target because pricing has eased and inventory is available. If you can stretch for a newer model and want the added maintenance and safety upgrades, the 2020 is the cleaner long-term pick. For most used buyers, the 2019 makes the most sense when you find a clean, well-equipped example at the right price.
