Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise its comfort, reliability, and excellent fuel economy, and many also like its smooth ride and attractive design. That lines up well with the Elantra’s role as a roomy, efficient, simple daily driver that still feels appealing rather than dated. If you want a compact car that emphasizes value and easy ownership over flash, this one fits that use case well.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to reliability, and drivers also describe the car as dependable and a good choice for long-term ownership. The expert evaluation reinforces that theme by describing the drivetrain as straightforward and free of aggravation, with predictable behavior in everyday driving. The ownership picture is helped by the warranty coverage and roadside assistance program, including free help with a flat tire during the coverage period.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the car’s basic durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by age or mileage.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?

At 47.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the car’s features and equipment still work as expected. Because this model year is now older, condition matters a lot more than mileage alone.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE is the entry point, while the Value Edition adds 16-inch aluminum wheels and a more upscale feel; the Limited is the most upscale of the standard trims. The base SE is also the one without the reversing camera.
• Powertrain: Most versions use a 145-hp 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, with a 6-speed manual in the SE and a 6-speed automatic in the Value Edition and Limited. The setup is tuned for easy, predictable driving rather than excitement.
• Safety package: The car includes a reversing camera on all but the base SE. It is not available with modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies.
• Infotainment: A touchscreen radio system with Bluetooth is standard on most versions, while higher trims add a 7-inch display, navigation, premium audio, Pandora access, and Blue Link subscription services.
• Fuel efficiency: The official EPA ratings are 28 mpg city, 38 highway, and 32 combined. In testing, it averaged 33.8 mpg.

Which 2016 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2016 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, Value Edition, Sport, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the least expensive path into the lineup, and it makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and are comfortable with the most basic equipment. It uses the manual transmission and is the trim where the reversing camera is not standard.
• Value Edition: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more polished look with 16-inch aluminum wheels and keeps the car focused on value. It also gets the automatic transmission and Active Eco setting, making it the sweet spot for everyday use.
• Sport: Choose this if you want the more powerful, more aggressive-feeling version of the Elantra. It adds a tighter suspension and a more performance-oriented character, though the steering is described as artificial.
• Limited: This is the most upscale standard trim, and it is the one to consider if you want the most comfort and tech. It can be optioned with features like a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, premium audio, Blue Link services, and dual-zone automatic climate control with a Clean Air ionizer.

The reversing camera is standard on all but the base SE.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market.

• Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,272 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.78% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 47.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,967, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $8,251 sits slightly below last year's $8,665.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. A clean history and strong equipment level should matter more when it comes time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The Elantra earns five-star ratings from NHTSA and Good ratings in all IIHS tests except the small overlap frontal impact evaluation, where it receives an Acceptable rating.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The car includes a reversing camera on all but the base SE, but it is not available with modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies. That means you should not expect the kind of active safety suite found in newer compact cars. The IIHS small-overlap result is the main caveat to keep in mind when comparing used examples.

Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 47.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.78% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It balances comfort, efficiency, and value in a roomy compact package.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,818, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,251 average.
• It offers strong value, generous space, and useful features.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $9,445, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,251 average.
• It brings a full redesign with stronger technology, safety, and efficiency.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, value, and everyday livability, the 2016 is the sensible pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 is the cheaper route into the same basic formula. If you want the newer redesign and can spend more, the 2017 is the upgrade path to consider.
