What should I look for when buying a used 2019 GMC Sierra 1500?

At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on bodywork quality, drivetrain behavior, and any signs of uneven wear or repair shortcuts. Because some owners have raised concerns about transmission issues and missing features, it’s smart to judge each truck by condition and equipment rather than trim name alone.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sierra ranges from work-oriented versions to upscale trims, and the cabin presentation changes a lot as you move up. The base truck is more straightforward, while higher trims add a more luxurious feel, premium materials, and more polished equipment.
• Powertrain: The truck offers multiple drivetrains, including a 6.2-liter V8 paired with a 10-speed automatic in the test vehicle. The review also notes strong acceleration, Dynamic Fuel Management, and an EPA estimate of 17 mpg in combined driving for that setup.
• Safety package: Driver Alert Package 1 adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. Driver Alert Package 2 adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights.
• Infotainment: All Sierras include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus GMC Connected Services through OnStar and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. The test truck also had an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, a Bose premium sound system, and a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The test truck is rated at 17 mpg in combined driving, and the review says it averaged 15.4 mpg on a test loop and 16.3 mpg over a week of driving.

Which 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, SLE, SLT, Denali, Elevation, AT4.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the starting point if you want the Sierra’s redesigned body and core truck capability at the lowest entry price. It makes the most sense if you care more about getting into the model than about luxury or extra equipment.
• SLE: This is the value-oriented step up, and it builds on the base truck with more everyday appeal. It’s the trim to watch if you want a better balance of price and features without jumping into premium territory.
• SLT: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it moves the Sierra closer to the upscale feel owners like while staying below the luxury-focused Denali. It’s a strong pick if you want comfort and equipment without paying top-dollar.
• Elevation: This trim adds a customized look on top of the SLE foundation. Choose it if style matters to you and you want a more distinctive appearance without going all the way to the highest trims.
• AT4: This is the off-road-oriented choice in the lineup, built from the SLT and positioned for buyers who want a more rugged character. It suits you if you want capability with a tougher personality.
• Denali: This is the luxury pick, with premium leather, open-pore wood trim, real aluminum accents, and the most upscale presentation in the lineup. Buy this if you want the Sierra to feel as premium as possible.

Driver Alert Package 2 is optional on the SLT, AT4, and Denali, so if you want the fuller safety suite, those trims are the ones to target.

• Inventory: There are 5,106 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.86% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $30,926, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $30,926 sits slightly below last year's $34,309.

That softer pricing can help you buy more truck for the money today, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, buying well matters more than usual because your exit price will likely depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.41/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 has not been rated by the federal government or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the review material provided.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every version includes or can be fitted with Driver Alert Package 1, which adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. Driver Alert Package 2, available on the SLT, AT4, and Denali, adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights.

A key caveat is that adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic braking, and lane-centering assist are not included on either package.

Should I buy a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.86% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.41/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The redesign makes it bigger, more capable, and more useful than before.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $26,110, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $30,926 average.
• It adds more standard content and safety features.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $33,080, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $30,926 average.
• It adds more SUV-like usability and utility-minded features.

The bottom line: If you want the redesigned truck and can find a clean, well-priced example, the 2019 is the right target. If your priority is saving money, the 2018 is the better value play; if you want a slightly newer truck and are willing to pay more, the 2020 is the upgrade path.
