What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan?

At 64.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on body condition, interior wear, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re looking at.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S comes with LED taillights, integrated roof rails, power/heated side mirrors, automatic headlights, trailer hitch preparation, and a 6-speaker stereo with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth connectivity. The SE adds keyless access with push-button start, dual-zone Climatronic climate control, a leather multi-function steering wheel, power driver’s seat, heated front seats, leatherette upholstery, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with voice control. The SEL adds remote start, a third USB port, navigation, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and a one-touch power liftgate. The SEL Premium adds ambient lighting, power-folding side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, leather seating, a hands-free power liftgate, and a 9-speaker Fender premium audio system.
• Powertrain: The Tiguan uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive or 4Motion AWD. The expert notes say acceleration is sluggish unless you use Sport mode, and the overall driving feel is more commuter-like than sporty.
• Safety package: The Tiguan comes standard with dual front- and side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, electronic stability control, and a reversing camera. Forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the base S trim, but standard on all other trims. The SEL adds adaptive cruise control, while the SEL Premium adds a 360-degree camera, active blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning system, automatic high beams, and park distance control.
• Infotainment: The Tiguan offers a 6.5-inch touchscreen on the S and an 8-inch touchscreen on the SE and above. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available, and the SEL Premium adds Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.
• Fuel efficiency: The FWD Tiguan gets 22 mpg city, 27 highway, and 24 combined. The 4Motion version gets 21 city, 27 highway, and 23 combined.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the Tiguan’s core space and practicality at the lowest entry point, but you should note that forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring are optional here rather than standard.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds keyless access, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and the larger 8-inch touchscreen while keeping the Tiguan’s practical formula intact.
• SEL: Choose this if you want a more upscale daily driver, since it adds navigation, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, remote start, and a power liftgate.
• SEL Premium: This is the most feature-rich version, adding leather seating, ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free liftgate, and the premium Fender audio system.

The safety-package gap on the base S is worth keeping in mind, since several driver-assistance features become standard only on the higher trims.
