What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan?

At 65.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, interior wear, and any signs of prior repair work. Because the Tiguan was designed around practicality, you’ll also want to make sure the cabin, cargo area, and seating configuration match your needs.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S comes with LED taillights, integrated roof rails, power/heated side mirrors, automatic headlights, trailer hitch preparation, and a 6-speaker stereo with a 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth connectivity. The SE adds keyless access with push-button start, dual-zone Climatronic climate control, a leather multi-function steering wheel, power driver’s seat, heated front seats, leatherette upholstery, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with voice control. The SEL adds remote start, a third USB port, navigation, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and a one-touch power liftgate. The SEL Premium adds ambient lighting, power-folding side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, leather seating, a hands-free power liftgate, and a 9-speaker Fender premium audio system.
• Powertrain: The Tiguan uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive or 4Motion AWD. The expert drive notes that acceleration is sluggish in normal driving and that Sport mode is the only way to get anywhere in a hurry.
• Safety package: The Tiguan comes standard with dual front- and side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, electronic stability control, and a reversing camera. Forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the base S trim, but standard on all other trims. The SEL adds adaptive cruise control, while the SEL Premium adds a 360-degree camera, active blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning system, automatic high beams, and park distance control.
• Infotainment: The Tiguan offers a 6.5-inch touchscreen on the S and an 8-inch touchscreen on the SE and above. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the SEL Premium adds the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.
• Fuel efficiency: The FWD Tiguan is rated at 22 mpg city, 27 highway, and 24 combined, while 4Motion versions are rated at 21 city, 27 highway, and 23 combined.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you the core Tiguan experience with the standard safety and convenience basics, plus the 6.5-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and are comfortable adding features selectively.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, push-button start, and dual-zone climate control. If you want the Tiguan’s cabin to feel meaningfully more modern without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
• SEL: This trim is for you if you want more convenience and driver-assistance equipment, including navigation, adaptive cruise control, a panoramic sunroof, remote start, and a power liftgate. It’s the right step up if you plan to keep the vehicle longer and want a more premium daily driver.
• SEL Premium: This is the most fully equipped version, adding leather seating, ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free liftgate, the Fender audio system, and the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit. Choose it if you want the most upscale Tiguan experience and are willing to pay for it.

The base S leaves forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring as options, while those features are standard on all other trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,930 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.96% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 65.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,249, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $12,249 sits slightly below last year's $13,605.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim, since buyers have plenty of listings to compare.

Well-equipped examples with strong maintenance history should hold up better than rougher ones, especially because shoppers in this segment tend to be selective about condition and features. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?

The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with dual front- and side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, electronic stability control, and a reversing camera. Forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the base S trim, but standard on all other trims.

That means the safety story is strongest once you move beyond the base trim, especially if you want the driver-assistance features included rather than added later.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.96% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 model emphasizes cargo space, backseat room, the option of a third row, and the latest in-car and safety technology.

The bottom line: The 2018 is the right path if you want the Tiguan’s roomier, more practical redesign and you’re shopping with a value-first mindset. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can use the softer market to target a well-kept SE or better-equipped trim rather than settling for the cheapest example.
