Why it stands out
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat stands out by adding more power and a bit of long-missing sportiness to Volkswagen’s midsize sedan. According to the test-drive summary, Volkswagen fitted it with an upgraded 4-cylinder engine and introduced a new GT trim that brings a V6 and a sport suspension. That combination gives the Passat a broader appeal than before, especially for buyers who want a family sedan with a little more character.
Even with those updates, the Passat is described as a competitive option in the midsize segment, though it is also said to be getting a little long in the tooth. The base S trim can now be equipped with advanced safety systems, including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a forward-collision warning system with automatic emergency braking. Owner feedback also points to the Passat’s roomy interior, comfortable seating, and impressive trunk space, along with a smooth ride and strong value, while some drivers note the lack of features such as memory seats and a HomeLink system and mention that the steering can feel soft.

I have the SE Trim level. Roomy sedan that fits two adults up front and two kids plus a car seat in the back. On top of that it has the pep and acceleration of a sports car. Smooth ride yet fun to drive. The perfect all around combination.

You get a lot of bang for your buck with the VR6 in this surprisingly roomy sedan. The rear seat and trunk room is impressive. Pros - VR6 is powerful and pulls strong in any gear at any speed. It also has a wonderful throaty exhaust note. Put a Borla exhaust on this and you gain about 30 bhp and wow does it sound mean! - LED headlights are wonderful for night time visibility. - Tons of trunk space for a mid-sized sedan. - Handles well through turns with only minimum body roll. - Lots of standard safety features - AEB, Rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitor, etc. Cons - Soft steering - Skinny tires, need more rubber on the road to use all that horsepower without chirping or spinning when the lead foot is unleashed. -

Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, comfortable seating, impressive trunk space, smooth ride, and strong value. The overview also points to a family-sedan use case with more character than before, which fits the added power and GT trim.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience centered on comfort, value, and a roomy cabin. The expert summary also frames it as a competitive midsize sedan with meaningful updates, which supports the idea that it can be a sensible long-term choice.
Volkswagen’s performance notes suggest the upgraded engine and smoother power delivery should make daily use feel easy to count on. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example with the features and condition you want.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
At 55.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings. Focus on condition, accident history, and whether the car has the equipment you want, since feature content varies by trim. It also helps to confirm that any safety or convenience packages are present if they matter to you.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, power driver’s seat, dual-zone auto climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks VW’s Car-Net App-Connect. Every other Passat trim gets App-Connect standard, and the R-Line adds heated side mirrors and seats, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a 6.3-inch touchscreen, and more aggressive styling. The SE adds keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, adaptive cruise control, and other comfort upgrades, while the SEL Premium adds real leather, a memory seat system, and more upscale equipment. The GT stands out with a sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and unique trim touches.
- Powertrain: The base engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, plus an 8% efficiency improvement. The GT and SEL Premium can be fitted with a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and the V6 returns 19/28/22 mpg.
- Safety package: The Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The GT comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, while lane-departure warning is available only on the SEL Premium.
- Infotainment: The base S uses a 5-inch touchscreen, while the R-Line moves to a 6.3-inch touchscreen and the SE Technology Package brings an upgraded 8-speaker stereo and infotainment system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard on every trim except the base S, and the system does not include wireless smartphone integration or OTA capability in the provided data.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined. The V6 returns 19/28/22 mpg.
Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, GT.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value starting point if you want the lowest entry price and the core Passat experience. You get the essentials, but you should strongly consider the Driver Assistance package because it adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
- R-Line: This trim is the first clear step up in comfort and style, with heated seats, heated side mirrors, V-Tex leatherette, and a larger touchscreen. It makes sense if you want a nicer cabin without jumping all the way to the upper trims.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control while keeping the Passat’s practical focus. If you want the most balanced mix of features and price, this is the one to target.
- SEL Premium: Choose this if you want the most upscale Passat experience, with real leather, a memory seat system, power-folding mirrors, an automatic parallel parking system, and a Fender stereo. It’s the trim for you if comfort and convenience matter more than value.
- GT: Pick this if you want the most character. The GT adds the V6, sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and distinctive styling touches, making it the right choice if you want the Passat to feel more engaging.
The safety package is a smart add-on on the base S, and the SEL Premium is the only trim with lane-departure warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 25.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 647 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,943.31, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $12,262 sits slightly below last year's $12,705.
That softer pricing suggests the Passat is still accessible on the used market, but it also means future sellers may need to stay competitive on condition and equipment. If you buy well and keep the car in strong shape, you should be better positioned when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, but Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and headlight tests keep it from earning a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Passat includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers. The Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and those systems are standard on the GT. Lane-departure warning is available only on the SEL Premium.
The main caveat is the Marginal IIHS performance on the passenger side and headlights, so you should pay close attention to lighting and crash-history details when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 25.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 adds an upgraded 4-cylinder engine and a new GT trim with a V6 and sport suspension.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,599, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,262 average.
- It emphasizes comfort, practicality, and modern convenience features.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2018 is the better pick because it adds more power, a GT trim, and still offers competitive pricing. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2017 is the better value play, especially if you’re focused on comfort and everyday usefulness rather than extra performance.
