Is the 2018 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

That kind of reputation matters if you want a used SUV you can count on for years, especially when you plan to keep it long term. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the model’s core reputation and more about how well a specific example has been maintained.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Toyota 4Runner?

At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the SUV has been used hard off-road or in harsh conditions. Because this model is often bought for durability and trail use, a careful condition check matters as much as mileage.

That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a better entry point today. The 4Runner’s reputation for durability and owner satisfaction should continue to support demand, even if prices have cooled somewhat.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2018 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.72% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $31,349, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $28,749 average.
• It adds a more comfort-focused cabin with more modern appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2018 is the stronger starting point because it combines lower pricing with solid owner satisfaction. If you can spend more and want the newer-year feel, the 2019 is the better secondary path for buyers who prioritize a more updated experience over price.
