CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Subaru Forester
Summary
With 3,069 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,259, 33.8% of 2018 Subaru Foresters for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Subaru Forester 4.75 / 5 stars.
67.7% of 2018 Forester models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Subaru Forester stands out as a practical compact SUV that emphasizes space, visibility, and all-weather confidence. It sits on a larger, more refined fourth-generation platform that brought more interior room, a taller passenger compartment for better outward visibility, and improved aerodynamics. Standard symmetrical all-wheel drive gives it the kind of traction Subaru buyers expect, and the Forester’s reputation for safety is reinforced by the fact that EyeSight became standard on all models by 2018.
What makes the 2018 model especially appealing is the way it balances everyday usability with a broad range of features. The lineup included a rear-view camera on all but the base model, while touchscreen infotainment, keyless access and start, and a power liftgate were available. The XT models added a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, giving buyers a more powerful option than the standard 2.5-liter engine. The 2017 refresh also carried into this generation’s final years with revised styling, updated headlights, extra soundproofing, thicker glass, and a heated steering wheel on the Touring model, all of which helped make the Forester feel more polished.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The Forester was praised as capable, but not particularly exciting to drive, and the CVT can feel sluggish. Early 2014-2015 models with the 2.5-liter engine were affected by oil consumption issues, and the CVT requires regular maintenance to ensure longevity. Even so, the 2018 Subaru Forester remains distinctive for buyers who want a roomy, safety-focused SUV with standard AWD and a strong reputation for practicality.

The features on this crossover are never ending! The ride is as smooth as butter! The turbo engine makes you forget it's a V4! To find an eight year old Forester with under 41,000 miles was a blessing & I expect to have it for another 11 to 15 years!

LOVE my new 2018 Subaru Outback! I was shocked to see how roomy it is...Im 511 & my husband is 65 and our long legs can very comfortably stretch out in the front. My husband can even fit comfortably in the back! I also love the heated front seats...great for my achy back. Love the steerling wheel controls...easy to navigate. Love the brake assist & lane assist. The brake assist has already helped keep from rear-ending someone who stopped short in front of me! I wasnt considering an Outback when searching for a new car, but Im sooooo happy I listened to my sister (who has loved her Outback for the past 8 years & who is 62...also needs a lot of room) and test drove some. The standard safety features & super roomy interior really make me feel like this was the perfect car for me & my family.

Very nice comfortable seating. Lots of leg room, user friendly operations and knob/button placement. Interior lighting and dashboard are excellent, very nice sound system, Car sits higher than older Foresters which is great, feels solid and sturdy like a luxury suv. Large moonroof, very powerful cold a/c, smooth mostly quiet ride, extra large rear cargo space and push button close hatch is awesome. Back up camera and lane keeper features very helpful. Only negative is no a/c vents for backseat passengers.

How much does the 2018 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,253 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,917 |
| Year-Round High | $16,867 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,864 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.62% |
Prices have softened 3.62% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,068 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and conditions.
Is the 2018 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 4.75/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise the spacious interior, safety features, and smooth driving experience, and many also like the comfortable seating and user-friendly technology. For you, that makes this a strong fit if you want a practical compact SUV with all-weather confidence and everyday usability. With 34.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary also points to a dependable ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the car’s safety features, comfortable cabin, and smooth driving feel. That said, some owners mention sluggish power and minor issues, so a careful used-car inspection still matters. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s core appeal and more about how well a specific example has been maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Subaru Forester?
At 67.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with past damage. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and signs of wear that could affect long-term ownership.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Subaru Forester?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep buyer’s market.
- Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,068 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.62% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,917, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $16,253 sits slightly below last year's $16,864.
That softer pricing suggests the model is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly, which can limit upside if you plan to resell soon. Still, the Forester’s practical appeal and broad shopper interest help support demand. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can improve your odds of holding value better over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.62% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $14,691, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $16,253 average.
- It offers value-focused practicality with a simpler, lower-cost ownership proposition.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $18,902, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $16,253 average.
- It adds a more modern-feeling package with standard all-wheel drive and advanced safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and everyday usefulness, the 2018 is the primary pick. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2017 is the better value play, while the 2019 makes sense if you’re willing to pay more for a newer-feeling alternative.
