CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 1,679 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,737, 32.7% of 2018 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Mazda CX-5 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
63.6% of 2018 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV stands out for blending style, sophistication, and substance in a segment where practicality often comes first. Mazda’s aim was to move closer to premium territory, and this CX-5 is presented as part of that effort. It is also described as one of Mazda’s best-selling models, which helps explain why it has such broad appeal.
What makes it especially distinctive is the way it is framed as a vehicle that can make driving feel engaging rather than merely functional. The test-drive summary says the CX-5 does that, and even suggests that with a few tweaks it would be worthy of premium status. Owner feedback lines up with that impression, with praise for the smooth ride, stylish interior, safety features, and on-road performance.
There are also a couple of tradeoffs to keep in mind. Some drivers wish the cabin were larger, and a few have reported paint flaking on certain colors. Even so, the 2018 CX-5 comes across as a well-rounded compact crossover that emphasizes driving enjoyment and upscale presentation as much as everyday usefulness.

Its an amazing vehicle over all. Reliability is amazing, premium features are amazing, sport mode really kicks in nicely but it's quiet which feels very premium. Not a gas puzzler either. I only wish I had the remote start and android auto installed.

We like the ccs 5 grand touring models but are wary of all the add ons during the paperwork. It seems like most are over priced for the amount of miles and age. But what isn’t in this area since the California invasion.

Great value. Would give 5 stars on all categories. Acceleration is adequate but not impressive 3.5 stars. Cargo space is a little tighter than competitors but more than adequate 4 stars. Hits 5 stars on all other categories. Super riding and handling vehicle for this class. HIGHLY recommend.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,746 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,187 |
| Year-Round High | $17,422 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,403 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.77% |
Prices have softened 3.77% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,690 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2018 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.6/5, and the expert rating is 8.17/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, great features, stylish interior, safety features, and on-road performance. That lines up well with the CX-5’s role as a compact crossover that aims to feel more upscale than basic transportation while still working as a practical daily driver.
If you want a compact SUV that blends style with driving enjoyment, this model year fits that brief especially well. 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels smooth, stylish, and well-liked over time, with repeated praise for its features and safety equipment. The expert drive notes also emphasize that Mazda’s engineering makes the CX-5 feel balanced and enjoyable, which supports the sense that it’s a vehicle you can count on for everyday use.
Mazda’s standard maintenance and ownership experience is framed as straightforward rather than burdensome, and the CX-5’s overall design suggests solid day-to-day dependability. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s core character and more about finding one that has been cared for consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Mazda CX-5?
At 63.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and exterior match the seller’s description. If you’re comparing multiple examples, the cleanest history and best-maintained condition should carry extra weight.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring each add more equipment as you move up, with the base trim lacking some of the upscale touches that help the CX-5 feel premium.
- Powertrain: A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder is the only engine, paired with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and a 6-speed automatic.
- Safety package: The i-ActiveSense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and more; availability varies by trim.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a freestanding screen, but smartphone projection is not included; navigation and a premium Bose sound system are available on higher trims, and Grand Touring is required for satellite radio.
- Fuel efficiency: The AWD version is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving, and the expert test loop returned 24.7 mpg.
Which 2018 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the CX-5’s core driving character and standard all-wheel-drive availability without the extra luxury touches. It makes sense if you want the model’s style and handling at the lowest starting price.
- Touring: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience equipment while staying below the top trim’s price. If you want the sweet spot between cost and features, this is the one to target.
- Grand Touring: This trim is the most upscale of the three, with the richest cabin presentation and the most available tech and audio equipment. Choose it if you want the most premium-feeling CX-5 and are willing to pay for it.
Every trim gets standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, and Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite is standard or optional depending on trim level.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Mazda CX-5?
The market looks moderate, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward selective shoppers.
- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,690 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.77% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,187, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $16,746 sits slightly below last year's $17,403.
That decline suggests the market has softened, which can work in your favor if you’re buying now but may mean a little less upside if you plan to sell soon. Even so, the CX-5’s strong reputation for style, safety, and driving enjoyment helps support demand among used shoppers.
If you keep the vehicle in good condition and maintain a clean history, you should be in a better position when it’s time to resell. Models with strong owner satisfaction ratings tend to hold buyer interest more effectively, especially in a crowded compact SUV segment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a four-star overall rating from NHTSA because of a four-star performance in the rear-seat side-impact test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Every CX-5 comes with standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, and Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and more. The standard Smart City Brake Support low-speed automatic emergency braking system and E911 emergency notification service add to the safety picture.
One caveat is that the headlights are rated Acceptable rather than Good by IIHS, which keeps the CX-5 from earning the higher Top Safety Pick+ designation.
Should I buy a 2018 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.77% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda’s premium-leaning design and engaging driving feel make this year especially appealing.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $16,126, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $16,746 average.
- It emphasizes sporty refinement and a fun-to-drive character.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $19,016, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $16,746 average.
- It adds smartphone connectivity and a turbocharged top-end upgrade.
The bottom line: The 2018 is a strong choice if you want the CX-5’s upscale feel, good safety, and engaging road manners at a softer price than newer years. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2017 is the value play; if you want newer tech and can spend more, the 2019 is the upgrade path.
