Why it stands out
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV stands out for blending style, sophistication, and substance in a segment where practicality often comes first. Mazda’s aim was to move closer to premium territory, and this CX-5 is presented as part of that effort. It is also described as one of Mazda’s best-selling models, which helps explain why it has such broad appeal.
What makes it especially distinctive is the way it is framed as a vehicle that can make driving feel engaging rather than merely functional. The test-drive summary says the CX-5 does that, and even suggests that with a few tweaks it would be worthy of premium status. Owner feedback lines up with that impression, with praise for the smooth ride, stylish interior, safety features, and on-road performance.
There are also a couple of tradeoffs to keep in mind. Some drivers wish the cabin were larger, and a few have reported paint flaking on certain colors. Even so, the 2018 CX-5 comes across as a well-rounded compact crossover that emphasizes driving enjoyment and upscale presentation as much as everyday usefulness.

Its an amazing vehicle over all. Reliability is amazing, premium features are amazing, sport mode really kicks in nicely but it's quiet which feels very premium. Not a gas puzzler either. I only wish I had the remote start and android auto installed.

We like the ccs 5 grand touring models but are wary of all the add ons during the paperwork. It seems like most are over priced for the amount of miles and age. But what isn’t in this area since the California invasion.

Great value. Would give 5 stars on all categories. Acceleration is adequate but not impressive 3.5 stars. Cargo space is a little tighter than competitors but more than adequate 4 stars. Hits 5 stars on all other categories. Super riding and handling vehicle for this class. HIGHLY recommend.

Is the 2018 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10. Owners repeatedly praise the smooth ride, great features, stylish interior, safety features, and on-road performance. That lines up with the CX-5’s role as a compact crossover that aims to feel more upscale and engaging than purely practical rivals. With 33.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you may find attractive value if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with repeated praise for the smooth ride, great features, and safety features. The expert drive notes also emphasize a well-sorted, balanced SUV that feels composed and enjoyable to live with. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example that has avoided cosmetic or condition-related issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Mazda CX-5?
At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually strong. Focus on body condition, paint quality, and signs of prior repair, since some owners have noted paint-related concerns. It also makes sense to verify that the cabin, electronics, and safety equipment all work as expected, because this model’s appeal depends heavily on its upscale feel and feature content.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring each bring a different mix of equipment, with the Grand Touring positioned as the most upscale and feature-rich choice. The base trim is the one most likely to leave you wanting more if you care about premium cabin details and convenience features.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The engine is described as just enough for the vehicle’s weight, while the transmission and driving mode tuning help it feel lively in town and on winding roads.
- Safety package: Every CX-5 includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support. Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite is standard or optional depending on trim, and it adds features such as adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a freestanding screen that works as a touchscreen only when the vehicle is stopped, with console controls and voice commands for driving use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included, and navigation plus the Bose audio system are optional on Touring and standard on Grand Touring.
- Fuel efficiency: The AWD version is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving, and the test loop returned 24.7 mpg.
Which 2018 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience without the extra luxury touches. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is also the trim most likely to feel stripped down compared with the others.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience without jumping all the way to the top price. If you want a more complete daily driver, this is the trim to focus on first.
- Grand Touring: This is the most upscale version, with the richest feature content and the strongest premium feel. It is the right pick if you want the CX-5 to lean hardest into its near-luxury personality.
Every trim gets the standard blind-spot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert, while i-ActiveSense availability depends on trim level.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,701 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.66% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,187, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $16,760 sits slightly below last year's $17,397.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already moved through some of its depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. For a future seller, that means your best outcome will likely come from choosing a clean, well-maintained example and avoiding overpaying today. Strong demand for the CX-5’s style, features, and driving feel should help support buyer interest later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a four-star overall rating from NHTSA because of a four-star performance in the rear-seat side-impact test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Every 2018 CX-5 includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support. Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite is standard or optional depending on trim, and it adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. The main caveat is that the headlights are rated Acceptable rather than Good by IIHS, which keeps the CX-5 from earning the higher Top Safety Pick+ designation.
Should I buy a 2018 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.66% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda’s premium-leaning design, balanced handling, and upscale cabin help this year feel especially polished.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $16,052, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $16,760 average.
- It emphasizes sporty refinement and upscale feel over maximum practicality.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $18,972, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $16,760 average.
- It adds smartphone connectivity, improved handling, and a turbocharged engine in top trims.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, style, and driving enjoyment, the 2018 is the sweet spot to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2017 can save you money while keeping much of the same character. If you want newer tech and are willing to pay more, the 2019 is the better upgrade path.
