Why it stands out
The 2018 Jeep Compass stands out in the crowded small-SUV market by offering plenty of versatility and the ability to venture where few other compact crossovers dare. It is also positioned as a value play, since it costs less than any other vehicle in the compact SUV segment and sits between compact SUVs and subcompact SUVs in terms of pricing and other statistics. That combination gives it a distinctive place for buyers who want a Jeep badge and a more affordable entry point than many rivals.
As the sophomore year of the second generation, the 2018 model year benefits from the Compass’s newer design while moving beyond the outgoing version it replaced. Owners commonly praise its smooth ride, numerous features, and value for money, and the available 4x4 capability is a recurring highlight. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: many drivers feel it lacks power and want more acceleration, while blind spots are another commonly noted complaint.

This car is just what we were looking for. It is loaded with options and is a great value. I would recommend others to consider it when looking for a SUV.

The fact that this car has more features than newer models due to the specific package of this one, I highly recommend! I have wanted this specific color for exterior and interior for a while, but was even more pleasantly surprised when it came with a panoramic sunroof, Apple CarPlay, Remote start and more. Very happy and think anyone else would love this car as well, even though it is an older model.

This vehicle is the limited trim and has more features than I was expecting. I have researched and compared it to the Subaru Forester, the Honda CR-V, the Toyota Rav 4 and for the price, it was the best deal. It is a very smooth ride and very comfortable, not to mention sporty looking.

Is the 2018 Jeep Compass a good car?
Generally — the 2018 Jeep Compass earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, numerous features, and value for money, and they also highlight the available 4x4 capability and interior upgrades. In the overview, it’s positioned as a value play with a Jeep badge, plus a more affordable entry point than many rivals, which fits buyers who want compact-SUV practicality with a more adventurous edge.
With 31.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Jeep Compass reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on its smooth ride, value for money, and 4x4 capability. That same summary also emphasizes interior upgrades and a generally trouble-free ownership impression, while the expert driving notes describe it as well rounded and very well suited for use as a daily driver.
The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that some examples may have been driven hard or maintained inconsistently, so condition and service history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Jeep Compass?
At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this model is often bought for its value and capability, it’s smart to focus on how well the drivetrain, brakes, and cabin features have held up in real use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Sport trim comes standard with a reversing camera, push-button start, Bluetooth connectivity with voice control, 6 speakers, and a 5-inch Uconnect touchscreen display. The Latitude adds automatically activating headlights, integrated roof rails, 17-inch aluminum wheels, chrome interior finish, ambient LED lighting, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The Limited is the upscale choice with leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and an 8.4-inch Uconnect multimedia display. The Trailhawk stands apart with red tow hooks, a blacked-out hood, unique badging and grille, skid plates, off-road tires, and unique 17-inch wheels.
- Powertrain: Only one engine is offered: a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. You can get front-wheel drive or available four-wheel drive, and the transmission setup varies by trim and drivetrain. The driving notes say it has decent jump off the line around town, but it can feel gutless on the highway.
- Safety package: The Compass comes standard with 7 airbags, all-speed traction control, stability control, the LATCH child-seat anchoring system, hill-start assist, rain brake assist, electronic roll mitigation, hill descent control, a reversing camera with active guidelines, and a trailer-sway damping system. Forward-collision warning and avoidance are available, and lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and Park Sense are also available on some versions.
- Infotainment: Sport and Latitude trims use a 5-inch Uconnect touchscreen, while the Sport and Latitude are available with a 7-inch Uconnect touchscreen that adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8.4-inch touchscreen is standard in the Trailhawk and Limited and available in the Latitude with the Navigation package.
- Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive Compass returns 23 mpg city, 32 highway, 26 combined. The 4WD setup with the 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual returns 22 mpg city, 31 highway, 25 combined. The 4WD setup with the optional 9-speed automatic returned 22 mpg city, 30 highway, 25 combined in testing.
Which 2018 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?
The 2018 Jeep Compass is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you the reversing camera, push-button start, Bluetooth with voice control, 6 speakers, and the 5-inch Uconnect screen. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra comfort and tech upgrades.
- Latitude: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like automatic headlights, roof rails, 17-inch wheels, ambient lighting, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. If you want a more polished Compass without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
- Trailhawk: This is the one to choose if you want the most off-road-focused setup, with skid plates, off-road tires, unique wheels, and Rock Mode with Hill Descent Control. It’s the clear pick if capability matters more than comfort extras.
- Limited: This is the upscale choice, with leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, and the large 8.4-inch display. It suits you if you want the most premium cabin experience in the lineup.
The safety content also notes that forward-collision warning and avoidance are available, while lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and Park Sense are available on some versions.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Jeep Compass?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,093 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.12% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,069, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Jeep Compass's resale value?
The current average of $13,069 sits slightly below last year's $14,541.
That softer pricing suggests the Compass has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right number. For a later seller, that means your biggest advantage is likely to come from buying well and keeping the vehicle in clean condition.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Jeep Compass safe?
The 2018 Jeep Compass earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Compass comes standard with 7 airbags, all-speed traction control, stability control, the LATCH child-seat anchoring system, hill-start assist, rain brake assist, electronic roll mitigation, hill descent control, a reversing camera with active guidelines, and a trailer-sway damping system. Forward-collision warning and avoidance are available, and lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and Park Sense are also available on some versions.
Should I buy a 2018 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.12% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 model year benefits from the second-generation Compass design while offering a strong value position.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $11,093, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $13,069 average.
- It’s an all-new model that aims to blend everyday comfort with real off-road ability.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger value proposition and a broader used-market selection, the 2018 is the better primary target. If your budget is tighter and you’re willing to give up some of the 2018’s market advantages, the 2017 can still make sense as a lower-cost alternative.
