Why it stands out
If you’re looking for a bargain in a safe, roomy, and dependable family-size crossover SUV, the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe stands out as a practical choice. Among 3-row, 7-passenger crossover SUVs, it is somewhat of a wallflower, and it has been half a decade since it was last redesigned. Even so, its age does not make it irrelevant, because it is one of the safest SUVs you can buy and a raging bargain in its segment.
That combination of value, safety, and family-friendly space is what makes the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe distinctive. It may not draw much attention, but it appeals to buyers who want a straightforward three-row crossover that emphasizes usefulness and affordability over flash.

I was already familiar with Hyundai Santa Fes. I think Hyundai offers more for the money compared to other models...at least for now. Until they become popular. Other comparable models are other mid-dized SUVs such as Toyota Hylander, Ford Explorer, Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Equinox, Subaru Forester, Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Passport, Honda CR-V.... For me, I do not care about the gadgets and exxtra, I only care about reliability and getting the best used car value for the money. So the Santa Fe is more than I need. If I was driving around the city I would look at the Santa Fe Sport. For a general mid-range the Santa Fe SE. For a little more style and comfort thecSanta Fe Ultimate Limited

2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,401 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,319.06 |
| Year-Round High | $16,415.49 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,199 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.10% |
Prices have softened 11.10% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,139 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $14,319.06, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe a good car?
Yes — 4.5/5 is a strong user rating for this model year, and the expert score is 8/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
The overview frames it as a safe, roomy, and dependable family-size crossover SUV, and the expert evaluation backs up that value-first positioning. It is especially appealing if you want a straightforward three-row crossover that emphasizes usefulness and affordability over flash.
32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still meaningful room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview describes it as dependable, and the expert evaluation reinforces that it is a practical, family-focused SUV with strong value and safety credentials. The performance notes also point to a refined powertrain and a generally quiet cabin, which are the kinds of traits that usually support easier day-to-day ownership.
Hyundai’s warranty and roadside-assistance programs add to the ownership appeal, and the longer Blue Link trial period is another useful perk. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright complexity and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe?
At 65.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
Start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage or repeated claims. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on body condition, braking feel, and any signs of uneven wear that could point to harder use. Because this is a family SUV, you should also pay close attention to interior condition, seat wear, and how well the cabin electronics and safety systems operate.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE is well equipped, but it lacks the bigger wheels and tires, navigation, panoramic glass sunroof, premium sound, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats that come with the SE Ultimate. The Limited Ultimate adds HID headlights that aim around corners, LED taillights, second-row captain’s chairs, and silver door trim.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 3.3-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It delivers plenty of power, and the Eco mode is tuned for fuel economy, though it can make the SUV feel lethargic.
- Safety package: Hyundai’s driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are described as effective, and Blue Link adds automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and safe teen driving settings. The adaptive cruise control could be smoother, and the lane-departure warning uses an audible alert rather than a tactile one.
- Infotainment: The system uses an 8-inch display, a CD player, four shortcut buttons, and knobs for common radio and climate functions. It also includes navigation and three free years of Blue Link subscription services.
- Fuel efficiency: The test loop returned an even 20 mpg, matching the EPA’s combined estimate.
Which 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe trim should I buy?
The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SE Ultimate, and Limited Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SE is the value play, but it skips the bigger wheels and tires, navigation, panoramic glass sunroof, premium sound, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SE Ultimate is the best balance of equipment and value because it adds a long list of comfort and convenience upgrades over the SE without moving all the way to the top.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited Ultimate adds HID headlights that aim around corners, LED taillights, second-row captain’s chairs, and silver door trim, but the upgrade is modest relative to the price premium.
The safety package is a strong reason to shop this model year, and the available driver-assistance systems are described as effective.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you focus on condition and price.
- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,139 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.10% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,319.06, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?
The current average of $14,401 sits slightly below last year's $16,199.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on how well you preserve condition and documentation. A clean history, strong maintenance records, and desirable equipment should help you stand out when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe safe?

The Santa Fe’s safety technology suite includes automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and safe teen driving settings tied to speed, curfew, and geographic boundaries. One caveat is that the adaptive cruise control could be refined, and the lane-departure warning is audible rather than tactile. Even so, this model year stands out as one of the safest SUVs you can buy.
Should I buy a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.10% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It stands out as one of the safest SUVs you can buy, with a strong value-first focus.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $15,192, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $14,401 average.
- It offers a more modern, quality-crossover feel and a clearer role in Hyundai’s lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the better bargain, the 2018 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong safety and value. If you are willing to spend more for a newer-feeling alternative, the 2019 is the better secondary path.
