CarGurus Analysis: 2018 BMW X2
overall

Summary
With 286 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,925, 35.7% of 2018 BMW X2s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 BMW X2 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
68.9% of 2018 X2 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 BMW X2 stands out as a luxury hatchback that only partly commits to being an SUV. BMW positions it as a small crossover with a mild suspension lift, and that gives it a distinctive place in a very small segment. It is also described as based on the MINI Cooper and inspired by the Subaru Crosstrek, which helps explain why it feels more carlike than many buyers might expect from a BMW crossover.
What makes the 2018 BMW X2 appealing is the way it blends style, sportiness, and a premium badge in a compact package. It is smaller and more expensive than the X1, cheaper than the X3, and the source describes it as a lot of fun. Owner feedback reinforces that character, with praise for its sporty performance, stylish design, good fuel economy, and strong long-distance driving manners.
There are tradeoffs, though. Some owners feel the safety features are lacking, and maintenance costs can be high. Its size also divides opinion, with some drivers seeing it more as a car than an SUV.

Great features, the price is high for the miles, compared with the Chevrolet Equinox. The BMW is a better car but more expensive to maintain.

I replaced my All4, 6-speed Mini Cooper Paceman with this car as I needed to get a car with AT. I have the M packages - handles wonderfully and is a gas to drive. Powerful engine and good mileage. Inagural drive was 300+ miles from Seattle to Spokane. Solid feeling and performance. Typical BMW layout of things and built for drivers. Sporty drive feel, tight steering. Good road feel. It doesnt have a sofa-like drive feel.

Took it to Vegas 3 days after purchasing one, I was worrying about the 112F heat from Los Ageles to Vegas there, and the uphills drive, but to my amazing, all went smoothly, and the car can accelerate uphill over any other SUVs. I was amazed with this car, and for the price its just unbelievable. Im glad of my decision to having bought it. The car gas mileage is better and the auto insurance is lower than my 2012 BMW 328i.

Good car for the price but its just that, a car not an SUV. Very little safety accessories or extras in this car. Thats why its so cheap.

| Year-Round Low | $14,832 |
| Year-Round High | $16,430 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,428 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.26% |
Prices have softened 9.26% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 285 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2018 BMW X2 a good car?
Generally — 4.33/5 from owners and 7.33/10 from our experts, the 2018 BMW X2 looks like a strong fit if you want a compact luxury crossover that leans sporty and stylish rather than purely practical. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its sporty performance, stylish design, good fuel economy, and strong long-distance driving manners. That lines up with the X2’s use case as a small, premium crossover that feels more carlike than many rivals and is meant to be fun to drive. On the market side, 37.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 BMW X2 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its good fuel economy and strong long-distance driving manners.
BMW’s scheduled maintenance coverage for the first three years or 36,000 miles helps soften early ownership costs, which is useful on a premium model that can otherwise be expensive to maintain. Even so, the X2’s higher running costs and premium-brand repair exposure mean you should budget carefully if you plan to keep it for the long haul.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 BMW X2?
At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or suspension repairs. Focus on overall condition, because this model’s premium parts and options can make neglected examples more expensive to bring back up to standard. It also helps to compare equipment carefully, since BMW often spreads desirable features across packages rather than making them standard.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The X2’s styling and cabin presentation are a big part of the appeal, and the M Sport X package adds a two-color exterior, 19-inch Y-spoke wheels, a sport suspension, sport seats, aluminum hexagon-patterned trim, and an M Sport steering wheel. Base cars are less richly equipped, so you should check carefully for the features you want.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are both offered, and the X2’s fuel economy is only so-so.
- Safety package: The Driving Assistance Package bundles forward-collision alert, automatic braking with pedestrian detection during daylight only, and lane-departure warning. Adaptive cruise control is separate, and lane-keep assist is not offered.
- Infotainment: The iDrive 6.0 system brings revised menus, a more robust home screen, pinch-to-zoom gestures, previewable submenus, animated settings demonstrations, and an indexed digital owner’s manual. Apple CarPlay is optional, and Android Auto is not available.
- Fuel efficiency: The xDrive28i is EPA-rated at 21 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. In testing, it averaged close to 24 mpg on premium fuel.
Which 2018 BMW X2 trim should I buy?
The 2018 BMW X2 is offered in 2 trim levels: sDrive28i, xDrive28i.
Here's the short version:
- sDrive28i: This is the front-wheel-drive version, and it gives you the X2’s core style and premium feel at the lower entry price. It makes sense if you want the look and driving character without paying extra for all-wheel drive.
- xDrive28i: This is the better all-around choice if you want the X2’s full capability and the version most buyers are likely to cross-shop. It adds all-wheel drive and is the trim most directly tied to the published fuel-economy figures, making it the best-value pick for many shoppers.
The Driving Assistance Package is a worthwhile safety add-on, especially because it bundles forward-collision alert, automatic braking with pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 BMW X2?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 37.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 285 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.26% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,832, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 BMW X2's resale value?
The current average of $14,906 sits slightly below last year's $16,428.
That decline suggests the X2 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that premium compact crossovers can lose value quickly when they’re new, especially when maintenance costs are part of the ownership equation. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should still attract interest, but you should expect resale to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and option content.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 BMW X2 safe?
The X2 has not been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Driving Assistance Package includes forward-collision alert, automatic braking with pedestrian detection during daylight only, and lane-departure warning. Adaptive cruise control is available separately, while lane-keep assist is not offered. Some owners also feel the safety features are lacking, so if safety tech matters to you, you should verify exactly which driver-assistance features are installed on the specific car you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2018 BMW X2 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 37.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.26% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Based on the MINI Cooper, inspired by the Subaru Crosstrek, and priced like a BMW, the X2 is the company’s latest of six crossovers, and our experts describe it as a lot of fun.
The bottom line: If you want the X2’s style, premium feel, and sporty driving character, the 2018 model is a sensible place to focus because prices have eased and owner satisfaction is strong. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully within this year’s inventory and look for a well-kept example with the right safety and convenience options.
