How much does the 2018 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 11.18% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,377 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable range of choices.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Yes — the 2018 BMW 5 Series earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.3/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, powerful performance, and luxurious features. That lines up well with the model’s focus on comfort over the sharpest sport-sedan edge, especially if you want a refined midsize luxury sedan with an efficiency-minded plug-in hybrid option in the lineup.

The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 33.1% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that feels smooth, comfortable, and generally satisfying to live with, while also describing it as a model people recommend for its handling. At the same time, some owners mention engine noise and potential reliability issues, so you should treat a clean service history as especially important.

The plug-in hybrid setup also adds complexity compared with a conventional sedan, so long-term ownership risk is worth checking carefully on any used example.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 BMW 5 Series?

At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or warning lights. Focus on overall condition, service records, and whether the hybrid and tech features operate as intended. Because this model can be option-heavy, make sure the equipment on the car you’re considering actually works and matches the listing.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The plug-in hybrid 530e differs only slightly from the gasoline versions, with eDrive badging, a charging port on the front fender, ambient lighting in BMW blue, and a reduced trunk. It also has a flat cargo floor, but the battery pack reduces usable space, so you should check whether that tradeoff fits your needs.
• Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup adds electric torque and strong efficiency, and it still uses a traditional automatic transmission. That means it should feel more familiar than many hybrids, while still delivering the extra low-end punch that helps it stand out.
• Safety package: The car can be equipped with driver-assistance packages that add blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and related features. Some of those systems are optional rather than standard, so you should confirm exactly what the car has.
• Infotainment: The iDrive system includes additional eDrive pages, and the car can be equipped with Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and enhanced connectivity. Some of those features may be tied to packages, so verify the exact equipment list.
• Fuel efficiency: The plug-in hybrid is rated at 72 MPGe when the battery is topped off, and it returns 29 mpg combined once the battery is depleted.

Which 2018 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2018 BMW 5 Series is offered in 1 trim level: 530e.

Here's the short version:

The 530e is the one to buy if you want the lowest-priced 5 Series in this model year and care about efficiency without giving up the familiar feel of a traditional automatic. It adds plug-in hybrid torque, strong fuel economy, and the model’s distinctive eDrive character, while still feeling planted and solid on the road. It’s the best-value choice if your priority is getting the hybrid advantage without moving up to a more expensive luxury sedan.

The safety package can add blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and related driver aids, but many of those features are optional rather than standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 BMW 5 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,377 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.18% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,151, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $18,181 sits slightly below last year's $20,470.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than broad market momentum alone. Well-kept examples with strong service records should stand out more clearly than average ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2018 BMW 5 Series earns a five-star rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The car can be equipped with driver-assistance packages that add blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and related features. Some of those systems are optional rather than standard, so you should verify the exact safety equipment on any used example.

Should I buy a 2018 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.18% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds the 530e plug-in hybrid, which makes frugality part of the appeal.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $16,957, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $18,181 average.
• It’s a thoroughly redesigned sedan with new engines and a lighter chassis.

The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive version of this generation’s 5 Series, the 2018 is the better pick because it adds the plug-in hybrid option and strong efficiency. If your priority is simply spending less up front, the 2017 is the more budget-friendly alternative and still delivers the redesigned-car appeal.

How does the 2018 BMW 5 Series compare to the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Our experts score the 2018 BMW 5 Series 8.3/10 and the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 8/10.

The BMW has the edge if you want the lower average used price and the plug-in hybrid efficiency story. The Mercedes is pricier on the used market, but it has a slightly higher share of good and great deals and a somewhat cleaner accident-free mix. If value and efficiency matter most, the BMW is the stronger buy; if you want a more traditional luxury-sedan alternative, the E-Class is worth a look.
